Weight gain during pregnancy?
so, i'm not a thin girl. i started this pregnancy at 200 lbs. however, i will say, i don't look like i weight that much (At least, i like to tell myself this )
i am 19w2d and i haven't gained any weight at all during this pregnancy, except in the last 4 weeks when i gained 2 pounds.
when i went to what i thought was my anatomy scan yesterday, they told me it was still to early to see everything, i wa skind of like because the baby has to be big enough to see what they need to at this point, but then the sono tech also said that since she wasn't moving around (she was moving around, but wouldn't change position) that didn't help any. Anyone else experience this?
Also, when i went in to see the Dr. he flipped out that i gained 2 ppounds and told me i shouldn't be gaining any weight at all because i was heavier than i should have been to begin with. Is this even possible - to not gain anything at all? I don't over eat - nothing tastes good so i don't crave food, i eat because i have to. and i don't eat junk.

Re: Weight gain during pregnancy?
It was recommended to me to gain 15-20lbs altogether. I'm a plus size mommy too and at 20 weeks I was up 10lbs. It's not just body fat you are gaining. You are gaining extra fluids and tissues too.

Weight gain during pregnancy?
I'm not too sure but I can't imagine he doesn't want you to gain anything at all. I do know when you start out the pregnancy at a higher weight they suggest less weight gain overall. but the baby is growing! How can they expect you to not put anything on at all?

Weight gain during pregnancy?
First, your dr telling you not to gain ANY weight, IMO, is crazy. You have gained 2 pounds in 19 weeks, that's almost 1/2 your pregnancy. It's not like you gained 20 so far!!! I am 22 weeks and up about 2-3 pounds and my Dr just said to continue being careful and not to overdo the carbs. If your Dr keeps it up, ask him how its possible not to gain at all, and see what he says. I am pretty sure he won't have a legitimate answer for you!!
As far as not seeing things at the u/s, if the baby wasn't facing or turning the way they needed it to for them to measure then they'll mal you go back. It wasn't necessarily that it was too early it was probably more of a positioning matter.

Re: Weight gain during pregnancy?
Thats odd the Dr. approached you that way. I have gained 4 lbs at 17 weeks, and Doc. was just fine about it. He'd like me to stay in the 30lb range..I too am not a skinny girl..but he was like if you gain 50lbs...you gain 50..he was not concerned aout it..I am the one that actually rbought it up.
Anyway, I hope baby cooperates at the next appt. another excuse to see her!

Re: Weight gain during pregnancy?
I'm sorry you are frustrated with your doctor. My SIL actually lost 35lbs during her pregnancy but she weighed more than you to start off. I don't think 2lbs is such a big deal, just keep up what your doing and try to stay positive.

Re: Weight gain during pregnancy?
I personally think that sounds ridiculous to tell you you can't gain 2 pounds. It would be unhealthy to both you and the baby to not gain anything during your pregnancy. Since the baby, fluids, placenta, etc all weigh a few pounds - over 10 by the time you give birth - then not gaining any weight during pregnancy would mean that YOU are actually losing weight. Pregnancy is a good time to eat healthy but not to diet. I think that's absurd to make you feel bad about gaining 2 pounds in 19w.
I started my pregnancy slightly overweight but my dr still said I should aim to gain around 20-25 pounds during my pregnancy. As of my 16w appt, I was -3. My 20w appt is next week and I'm positive I'll have gained. My belly is growing and I'm hungry often. I'm not going to starve myself during pregnancy. I can lose it afterwards.
As for the anatomy scan, I'm sure they just wanted to be able to get all the measurements at once and your baby wasn't in position. If I remember correctly, your dr was kind of weird for your 16w scan, too. I think your office is just very finicky when they do ultrasounds - it's nothing to do with you. When's your next appt?

Next Appointment is Columbus day, They were able to see everything except count fingers/toes and to see her spine. We could see it on the screen but they said she needed to be facing belly down to be able to see it correctly. Oh, and I think they said they couldn't see the kidneys either. I asked the Dr. about it and he said that nothing is wrong, its just that they couldn't see those few organs and bones.
I don't see how its possible to not gain anything at all either. I mean, even if i don't gain any weight, i would still be gaining because the baby is growing and then muscle and tissue plus fluid! i had always read that if you start off heavier, you should aim to gain less, but not any at all.
I thought this was kind of weird but wanted to see if anyone else had heard the same from their Dr's.

Re: Weight gain during pregnancy?
That's a very odd way for your dr to approach you about it. i was overweight when i started this pregnancy. weighing almost 170. Now at 32 weeks i've hit the 200 mark, and while my dr has said things to me, such as expressing concern over gaining 8 lbs every 4 weeks the last 2 appts, she goes about it and a better way, asking about food, habits, exercise etc.
I don't think gaining 2 lbs is alot at all and your dr shouldnt be yelling at you over it. most like to set a goal of what your recommended weight gain should be.

Re: Weight gain during pregnancy?
I am SO upset for you right now. do you generally like your obgyn? If my obgyn told them to me, I would be very upset.
I am not a thin girl either to begin with unfortunately. my doctor never really told me what I should or should not gain but for the first 20 weeks i lost some weight and then went back to my pre-pregnancy weight eventually because I was very sick.
Anyway, I have started gaining as well in the past 6-7 weeks. Not a whole lot but about 8 lbs in 7 weeks. I didnt get myself upset over it- I didnt gain weight until now.
I read a bunch of information and nowhere did it say you shouldnt gain anything if you were overweight to begin with. It doesnt make sense, there is a baby who weighs something inside of you, not to mention the fluids and everything else. I read somewhere the amount that the fluids weigh and they are atleast a few lbs. Then the baby. I did read that if you were overweight, you should gain less- than someone else- prob like 10-15 lbs.
Your doctor is not even making sense and is insulting imho how he approached it with you.
My doctor did tell me to be careful when he saw that I gained but in a nice way and not yelling and when I did say that I hadnt gained the whole time until now, he acknowledged that at least which I think your doctor should do for you. I also hear that most doctors always say "be careful" regardless of your pre-preg weight
If you want to talk, fm me!
I am so sorry and not that my opinion matters one bit, but I dont think you gained too much weight- lol 2 lbs. you are pregnant! My Gosh!!!

Weight gain during pregnancy?
That's insane. I haven't gained anything either and was told it could go either way. Either I wouldn't gain anything, or I'd hopefully only gain 15-20 pounds. SMH, maybe he was having a bad day?

Weight gain during pregnancy?
i usually speak with his nurse practitioner and she is such a sweetheart and never says anything about my weight. i guess because yesterday was a holiday, i saw him instead. He was fine and nice every other time i saw him, but yesterday he was like what do you eat and i told him and honestly its not a lot because i don't feel well or when i do eat i feel sick afterwards. and he was like well your going to have to find out where to cut something from (almost as if i was lying to him about my intake) all the while i'm sitting there thinking, its 2 pounds!!!!!! i get trying to minimize your weight gain, but to not gain anything at all i feel is really hard. i'm not going to stress it, if i gain more when i go back, then i gain, it will just be on me to lose it afterwards, but i'm not going to obsess over it.

i think you are right to not stress/obsess over it! good for you. you know yourself and you know what you are eating and doing or not doing. i mean, 2 lbs can also be water weight, or whatever it is, change from morning to evening, etc.
on a side note- i am SO SO sorry you are still not feeling well. i went through a whole lot of that and it was a terrible experience and part of that experience had to do with knowing i had to eat to stay strong and for the baby but not even wanting anything, much less anything healthy. it was just like get down whatever would stay down.

Re: Weight gain during pregnancy?
it sounds almost like he'd rather you LOSE weight! I dont know much about this except that everyones weight gain and doctor's expectations are different. What exactly does he have in mind for you? Maybe you could ask him to clarify what kind of food/diet he'd like you to eat while pregnant. Your body's going to do what it does. And honestly 2 lbs is so negligible- you could've drank more water that day and that may have "tipped" the scales .

Um, you're growing a person. How is it possible to not gain any weight? I realize that the amount of weight varies by woman, but how is two pounds bad?? Sheesh, I think I gained two pounds in the last week!

Weight gain during pregnancy?
the best part was that he told me NOT to diet. and i was like ok, so the goal is to gain as little weight as possible and he wa slike no, the goal is to gain nothing at all. and i know i must have had this look on my face but i don't care. I mean honestly, I have friends who are seriously obese and are pregnant and they still gained just baby weight, like 15 pounds. i've never known any one women to gain nothing at all, even if she was overweight. and i've also known women who were tiny who haven't gained much either.
on a sidenote, i was asking him how they could still not see everything on an ultrasound (trying to confirm what the tech said basically about how since she was in the wrong position, they couldn't see everything she would need to see) and he was like, well, the bigger the woman, the more layers of fat you have to go through to see the baby. (i can understand this, and yes, it makes sense. HOWEVER, i am not some 400 pound woman that a sono machine has to dig through to see the baby!) I think it depends on their machines too because when I have sono's done in certain of their machines, i can see her as clear as day and on some other machines its so fuzzy! at that point i was just like ok and wanted the appointment to be over.

Re: Weight gain during pregnancy?
i went a little later - i think at 22 for my sono- and i went to a special place (Madonna) that has very high tech equipment i believe. anyway, they didnt mention anything about fat but no, they could not see the heart because he wouldnt move, i had to come back, he still would move in the right place that they could see it. ugh. i have to go back for a fetal eco now. But anyway, yes this does happen and its because the baby wont go into the right position. Im sure sometimes it might have to do with ones layers of fat or how early you are at your appointment but not the fat thing is probally not the main reason and if it is, it would be because, like you basically said, the technology where you were was not high tech enough. That would happen to anyone, in that case, regardless of their size.
eta: with regard to the not dieting, not losing, just staying the same. basically from reading and also from figuring out what this all means on my own, if you dont "diet" but eat healthier (and less) calories than you did prior to pregnancy (not to make calories go too low under a healthy daily supply, but going with the assumption that an overweight person might have been eating TOO many calories pre-pregnancy and now just brings it down to where it should be), they might be able to balance out the weiht that they are gaining from fluids and baby and the weight that they would technically be losing if they werent pregnant by reducing calories. So, that is how one would in theory not gain anything but its still silly and there are overweight people who arent necessarily overweight because they were overeating pre-pregnancy- not too mention that no matter who you are, i thought it was natural to be a little more hungry when you are pregnant and to eat a little more.

Re: Weight gain during pregnancy?
I'm sorry but that is rediculous. I am 200 at the start of this preg and a little less with my first. With my first I gained 20 lbs and that was perfect. With this one and a new dr, she said to gain about 20 as well. I hope to not gain that much b/c I want to lose after this baby but it won't matter. I am 14 weeks and I think I've gained 2 lbs.
He was very mean about it. I don't eat alot b/c I'm not feeling great. I can't see how you gain a little weight.

Weight gain during pregnancy?
2 pounds is nothing!!!!!! So I think you are doing pretty damn good! I went for my anatomy and I am 20 weeks....and she was being soooooooooo uncooperative. So I can see how they can not see everything. They need certain measurements in certain positions....and it took 45 mins to do that yesterday. She was low with her head buried and had her back facing us the whole entire time! They did alot of shaking and re positioning....and needed like 3 more things and almost had me come back....but the last 3 mins of the appointment she finally flipped and they got what they needed. Sounds like your LO is stubborn like mine!

I agree - I started this pregnancy at 200 lbs, I'm at 226 lbs at 29 weeks, my doc says I'm doing fine with my weight. 2 lbs could be water retention...
