I don't think the bathroom thing is weird, but the lunch thing is just rude.

This. 100% word for word.

And I'm really floored at how many people are "skeeved" by letting contractors use their bathrooms or by even letting company.

I mean, I SUPPOSE I could see being a little weirded out by having a contractor/stranger use your toilet, but COMPANY?? If you're close enough to invite someone to your house for a party then really, I think they're close enough to use your precious bathroom and not have it skeeve you. I mean, really?? Chat Icon

Im glad you dont mind sitting your arse down on a toilet some stranger sat on and possible took a wet dump on.... Or who may not wash his or her hands after going...you dont know what people are doing or about their hygiene and its your house not some public bathroom.

I would never not let someone use it, but Im not thrilled that they are. It doesnt get me all excited knowing I need to wipe down the bathroom everyday because they are using it.

First off, what kind of friends/family do you have that would shit on your toilet seat? And REALLY? You really think your contractor or the guys working for him are going to shit up your bathroom that much? WOW. These people are being paid to do a job in your home, they're not animals, so NO, I wouldn't worry about sitting my ass down on a toilet in my home after POSSIBLY one of the men I've ENTRUSTED to work on my house used the bathroom.

Good lord. They're men, not animals for goodness sake. Chat Icon

ETA: I truly pity the poor ******* that gets to work at your house. Yeesh! Chat Icon

I am mainly talking about strangers not family.

Im glad it doesn't gross you out but the reality is they are going to shiit on your toilet and its just gross especially when you don't know the person and then have to clean up after people you do not know.

When you use a public toilet do you sit right on the lid or do you hover or put toilet paper down?? I don't see the difference. Strangers are using those toilets and peeing on the seats and etc.... Im not going to sit right down on it.

You need to seriously relax. I will again say i would never tell them no, ever! I think they have the right to use my bathroom and not pee out in my bushes, but that doesn't mean it isn't gross to have to clean up after them.

This is too funny! How do you know they are taking shits? Let alone on your toilet seat?! I am cracking up!

Using the bathroom I don't find weird...we're all human and have to go!

The lunch thing--I think it's rude they expected it but it's always nice to offer drinks. I usually just offer drinks...but they've always left to go have lunch...

I do have to say that some of the responses are appalling and clearly show that some posters think blue collar workers aren't even worthy of using their toilets, like they're bunch of animals. Awful.

ETA: I just don't understand how hard it is to give the toilet a quick wipe down with a Clorox wipe if you're sooooo skeeved?

I dont care if its blue collar worker or a financial advisor in a suit. They are still a stranger. It has NOTHING NOTHING to do with the type of job they have. MY FIL is a plumber and my husband worked construction while in college so I am not hating anyone. I just don't want my bathroom to be like a public restroom where I need to wipe it down, hover or put toilet paper down.

yes a quick wipe down is fine but when people are working in your house for weeks and everytime you have to go to the bathroom you have to give it a wipe down it can be annoying, I WOULD DEAL WITH IT, but im not thrilled about it.

I am sorry but you sound ridiculous. You're entitled to your opinion, and I'm entitled to think that you sound like a real piece of work.

Your bathroom must really be the shit.

How am I a piece of work? How do I sound ridiculous?

I would openly let anyone one who came to my house use my bathroom, but Im not going to deny that I would wipe it down before I use it.

Seriously though..I doubt they are gonna take a shit in your bathroom, wipe it on the seat, and then leave. They probably just have to pee.

Weird or Not Weird? DH and I disagree.

I think the lunch thing is odd.

I would find it more annoying that they are constantly knocking on your door than the fact they are using the bathroom. We've had work done on our house as well and they may have asked me a couple of questions but, they weren't constantly interupting what I was doing.

I recently had many workers at my house. . .

I always showed them the bathroom, and if they were doing something particularly dirty that day I put cardboard down.

For the guys who came for a few days like electricians, painters, sheetrock - I bought them lunch every day and left water and soda for them.

For the contractors who were in my house for over a month, I bought them lunch once or twice a week.

No one ever ASKED for lunch. . . but, Ive also never heard of not buying lunch for your workers, especially if they are there for a short time. Everyone I know just does that.

Im just curious as to why you would by them lunch everyday? I get its of course a nice thing to do and they work hard but we all go to work and bust our butts. No one buys us lunch everyday. And isn't that expensive for you to have to do? Not only are you paying for the work but shelling out the extra $$ to feed them. Just seems like a big expense.

I wouldn't look at it that way at all. I can't give this, because I don't get that..etc. Bad mentality. Do it because it feels good, it is the right thing to do, whatever, but not because you don't get it where you work.

We bought the contractors that did major work on our house lunch 3 of the 4.5 days they were at my house. We spent a lot of money, but that went to the owner of the company, etc...you dont tip them, so I think $40-50 bucks on pizza isn't a big deal. They were all so appreciative, too! They cleaned up messes that they weren't even responsible for.

A few years ago we had a huge amount of work done on our house. We have 2 bathrooms upstairs and a half-bathroom downstairs. I guess for whatever reason I had plungers in the upstairs bathrooms but not in the little one downstairs. Well... one day one of the guys came out of the bathroom and had to ask me for the plunger! Whoa... I just checked back and I'm shocked. I had no idea that this would turn into such a heated discussion.

It was a lighthearted question to settle a debate between my DH and I... I found it bizarro and he didn't.

They did the same thing today and I just handed them the menu instead of ordering for them and ultimately paying. We provided them with a ton of drinks and IMO that's enough. I think it's super nice and generous for those of you who feed them daily, I've just honestly never thought to do it!

My DH is a carpenter building and installing cabinets, kitchens and wall units. He works in a lot of people's homes- sometimes all day. I am sure he has used their bathrooms.

As for lunch, he would never do that. He once had a worker who asked a client to make them a sandwich. He was mortified and told the guy you never do something like that. If you want something, tell me and I'll go get it for you. He won't even ask for a glass of water.

Re: Weird or Not Weird? DH and I disagree.

The bathroom thing wouldn't bother me. What are they supposed to do, hold it until they go home? I'd just clean after they left or whenever I had to use it. The lunch thing is absolutely rude. I've never heard of such a thing!

ETA: DH and I always offer workers water, soda, etc., and if we are ordering pizza, or going to Dunkin Donuts, we ask if they want anything. Honestly, my experience is that they decline the food and say that they will get on their lunch break. I would be so taken aback if I was asked to buy lunch for them. No one buys me lunch when I'm at work!

Weird or Not Weird? DH and I disagree.

We had the opposite happened to us when we did an addition to our house. They never asked to use the bathroom. Most of the trades came and went in half a day so maybe they didn't need to go. We had a newborn at the time. Maybe they didn't want to bother us. I did see one guy going behind my shed. I wondered what my dogs thought of that? ha!
The only ones who asked for lunch were the framers and the roofers which my contractor told me about. I can understand why they don't bring lunch. They worked all winter outside and there's no way to heat up their food. They wanted something warm so I ordered lunch for them. My contractor offered to pay me back but I said it's okay. They are working hard to get a roof over our head.

I get what you are saying. There will always be some people who get overly sensitive and make sweeping generalizations.

My parents had people working to rebuild their dock after Hhurricane Irene and there was one day one of the guys must've had a stomach bug. My mom said he was in and out of the bathroom ALL DAY and stunk it up really bad.

She said he was really nice and probably super embarassed- but it doesn't make it any less gross to have to deal with it!

FTR - almosy every worker that's ever come to my house has IMMEDIATELY used my bathroom to do #2. Prior to even starting.

How do I know? The smell.

It's like they're in a new place and need to mark their territory or something.

1 - I let them use my bathroom. It never occured to me to be skeeved by it.

2 - I never bought lunch on the regular.

i don't think the bathroom thing is weird. don't your employers provide you with a bathroom? you are temporarily their employers. if they asked for water i'd think that's okay too (i know that's not what you're asking though.) however, having you buy them lunch is ridiculous. you should ask for that money back.

Re: Weird or Not Weird? DH and I disagree.

I let the guys working on the house use the bathroom, but when I had my roof done, no one asked. That was also a one day job, I would imagine it would be different if they were there for days or weeks at a time. I offer water, not lunch. I work with contractors and I don't think they expect lunch from a homeowner. It's a nice thing to do, but I guess I am not that nice.

And depending on the contracting company, there are guys who will pee in the yard. A good contractor won't allow his guys to do that, but there are all kinds of contrators out there.

Re: Weird or Not Weird? DH and I disagree.

Lunch things is completely weird and I would have handed them the phone and let them handle it AND the payment.

Bathroom thing is weird...I would rather they used my bathroom other than peeing up against my house BUT I would be skeeved and would be cleaning my bathroom extra well and very frequently while they are here.

If the job was to take one week or longer they should have ordered a port a potty for your premises and factored that cost into your contract.

No I don't mind. I would clean after they use it in order for me or my family to use it again. I've had a few bad experiences.

Tmi alert....The one that sticks in mind is the guy who used the toilet, but no joke EXPLODED in it. Poop was All along the inside cover, all along the rim and bowl. stunk the bathroom to high holy hell. I understand that nature sometimes needs you go right away at times but please have the decency to use the toilet brush to clean the bowl, give a few courtesy flushes, spray some freshener open door and or window to aerate. When I walked in I thought I was going to die. This was one bad experience. Most and I mean more than 90%, in my experience, are not like this.

Eta- I never provide lunch, just water, especially in summer months. I offer other nonalcoholic beverages to the landscapers who we have had for years
