Weird TMI v-birth question
A friend and I were talking yesterday about what they do to widen the opening during childbirth.
Lovely topic. It came up because I had an episiotomy and my friend was curious about some things.
Anyway, I have a vague recollection that right before he was going to start crowning they did something to widen the opening down there - besides the epi. I could swear I felt them use some kind of medical instrument to clamp me open.
Does anyone else remember that? Or am I going crazy?
I guess I am just curious about all those things they did to me LOL.

I doubt they used an instrument, unless it was an emergency and they use forceps or a vacuum.
My Dr didnt do anything, not even an epi.

Re: Weird TMI v-birth question
No, they didn't do anything like that to me. I didn't have pain meds so I felt everything... the only thing my dr. was doing during my 1 hour of pushing was massaging and stretching that area so I wouldn't need an episiotomy. I ended up having a very small tear (1 stitch) but I really believe what she was doing helped a lot.

I didn't have that with either birth, but I had second degree tears both times.

Re: Weird TMI v-birth question
I'm crashing but I know that sometimes they use oil and massge to try and prevent tearing during labor and before and during pushing...
I heard that you can do this at home prior to going into labor - you can get some kind of oil and massage yourself (or have your DH do it) and I think you start a few weeks before your due date...I guess to soften the area and to prepare it for stretching. I don't think it has been proven to work though - I think it's a midwife thing...I am seeing a midwife and we discussed this stuff at my first visit - I have a very hard time healing (I get painful keloids) so I was asking her questions about episiotomy and tearing b/c it's my biggest fear - I don't want any keloids down there! She said she doesn't do episiotomies (which I was glad to hear) but I guess there is no guarantee you won't tear....
The massage and oil is the only thing I've heard of to help stretch...

Re: Weird TMI v-birth question
my doc used a ton of baby oil, she kept yelling for more, its probably one of the few things I remember.
I had multiple tears and an episiotomy. I was a mess.

Re: Weird TMI v-birth question
My midwife and the delivery nurse kept stretching and massaging the opening with some sort of lubricant. I did end up with an emergency vacuum extraction of DS but only tore a little bit on the inside so I'm thinking the stretching and massaging helped a lot.

Yup, my dr. did this. Forgot to mention the oil in my post above.

Re: Weird TMI v-birth question
All I can remember is the stretching, I wish I could forget it I don't remember any objects being used. Reading everyones posts made me kind of recall the oil. I had a 2nd degree tear and 3rd degree episiotomy

Re: Weird TMI v-birth question
They used a vacuum to get out DS. I don't remember too much, but the top of the vacuum flew off and blood flew straight into my doctor's eye. She then put on googles.
DH said they kept rolling IT back to get DS out.
