Weird work situation...what would you do?
I am an independant consultant, but I have been working with the same company since December. I started here as a fill-in for someone who was on maternatiy leave...but after she came back, they asked me to stay. I pretty much keep to myself...have lunch at my desk, etc. I get into some personal conversations with a few others since we all have babies and such. Nobody ever asks me if I want to go out for lunch, or if they can bring me something back, etc.
They sent an email the other day about someone in our department who is leaving and their last day is Friday. They are collecting money for a gift, having cake, etc. So, this morning, they gave me the card to sign (I have not yet donated any money), but I guess in giving me the card, I'm expected to toss in a few bucks. It's not the money I'm worried about, but I'm not sure if I should just toss in my few dollars and think nothing of it, or be insulted that I'm good enough to give money for a gift, but not good enough to have lunch with?
I do work with this person on occassion and she sits right across from me (the person is leaving). Sorry so long...but since I'm not an employee...what are the "rules"?

eh, in my office everyone gives, even if you're not close with the person. i'd sign the card and toss in $5 to keep on good terms. they'll talk about you if you don't give.

If it were me, I would contribute and sign the card.
As far as lunch and all that other stuff, you might have to make the first gesture and ask someone to lunch with you. They may think you prefer to be left alone. I have seen that a lot of times in an office. I do think someone should have already made the gesture but since they haven't, the ball is in your court.

I would give the few bucks and sign the card...... Also, if you feel a bit "left out" of the daily socializing, and it is bothering you, maybe you should invite some people out to lunch one day or instead of eating at your desk.... go out, and ask if anyone wants anything... people just may think you would rather be alone......

I agree. Take a chance and either join them when they eat or invite them or at least a few of them out to eat. Especially since you said you talk to them already, I don't think they are excluding you purposefully they probably just think you like to eat by yourself.
