I have to agree with you. My dh and I live on less than alot of people (we are in the lowest part of this poll) and still are able to pay our bills on time. Yes, we bought our house awhile ago but we do have cc debt and kids in daycare that kills us as we would have alot more spending and saving money. We don't go on vacations and don't go out alot of places because we can not budget it in. Even though it is nice to have money, as you can see, even people think over $100,000 is not good which makes us "poor" people happier than the "rich".
But the big difference is that you would not be able to own a home if you went to purchase one now, which is the situation most of us on here are in. Yes, it is possible if you bought 5 or more years ago, but 5 years ago I was in college.
I think that all depends on what kind of house you are looking for. My gf makes about the same as my dh and I and is looking for houses now. No, she is not going to get a $500,000 house that is all finished (which she does not want as her dh is handy) but she will find something and own her own home. I don't think a home has to be something that is huge and is mostly bought to try and impress people. There is nothing wrong with that 3 bedroom ranch that is just "too small" for everyone. I have lived in one for over 10 years and now have 2 kids and we are fine.

honestly? me n dh barely make the lowest bracket COMBINED
n sometimes it upsets me that ppl make SO much money
but then i realize that SOME ppl, not ALL, who make tha tkind of money arent home by 5 every night, dont see their SO every night, and i rather that than all the $$ in the world
I have to agree. While I am sure there are many people (and even on this board) who are are able to work the 9-5 and make good money, most do not. I do not want to take away time from my kids just so I can have a larger home.

I think what some people are trying to point out though is that it's not that black and white. Not having a "well paying job" isn't the fast-track to family bliss, and having a "well-paying job" does not mean you're taking time away from your family. Being comfortable or even wealthy does not mean you're not spending time w/your family.

While I know many people ARE able to do both, I don't think it is in high numbers, especially if you are younger and starting your own business or trying to work your way up the ladder.

I agree with this. I actually have found that the higher level you are, the more flexibility and autonomy you have with your position. Yes, it is added responsibility, but I am now at a level when I can somewhat come and go as I please...Not the case for any entry-level people in my field. I learned from my father who holds the highest position you can in my field that it isn't necessarily about working more hours, it's about working smarter and harder while you are there. And probably about spending less time surfing the web and on LIF.

I agree but the point is most highly paid jobs are highly responsible ones that you need to work the extra hours or go on business trips to keep them. Of course not all high paid jobs are like this but I would say the majority of them are. My job is not well paid but 95% of the people stay WAY past the time they have to so.

That can happen on a smaller salary too.

Re: "Well paying jobs"
If we were to get a true consensus of the income levels and financial situaions of people in this board, we would probably find the average income to be a lot lower than what it seems based on people's posts. Not many people will come on here and say that they are earning 30K a year when someone else just mentioned their new $1,000 handbag. And, it seems that everyone here lives in nice typical LI neighborhoods, but we aren't seeing a huge representation from the very exclusive communities.

Most of the people that I know that make over 250K have the luxury & freedom of time. Sure they have to travel, but they also can take off whenever they want to. They're really not constrained to "hours". Usually if you bring in $$$ for a company/corp., then they don't bust your balls about the time you spend at the office.

I would think maybe the women making the high end of the spectrum wouldn't be able to spend their work days on LIF.

I don't think the post was about what our income is, but more of an opinion on what posters considered to be "good" salary, meaning financially well off.

That was exactly my point--when you get to a high enough level, you have proven yourself, and so long as you continue to be responsible you can take days off to golf or whatever. My dad was the one often driving us to college because he had enough people under him to clean up when he wasn't there.

I agree- my DH is a VP and strolls into the office at 12pm- or later sometimes- he takes off when ever he wants ( he doesn't need permission weeks in advance like I do)- and as long as his numbers are good- the president doesn't care what he does
he doesn't have set hours to be at the office like most people- but he stays later then most or stops by the office on the weekend- but he is not forced too

Re: "Well paying jobs"
I think we would be comfortable with over 100k, Dh has the potential to make that in a year. WE would like to buy a house, but we don't need the most expensive house, in the most expensive area.
I think its about want vs. need.

I agree with you. I am just stating how it is where I work. I feel like I have alot of flexibility with my job concerning time off because I have been here so long that I have alot of time and my boss is great on taking time off and I make nothing-lol!!

thats only people who work in the union, right? if you have a friend thats a doctor or a lawyer, they can "act" like they make a ton, but they might not.
all im saying is that unless we see peoples paychecks and bills, its probably a waste of energy to discuss if they are well off or not!

Who said it was in reference to friends?
Besides, it's not uncommon to discuss finances with friends. The topics of loans, retirement, savings come up quite often, so usually income comes up at some point.

It wasn't friend specific. It was a general question. I mentioned my friend who does very well for herself in terms of comparison to a "well paying job"
How do I know how much she makes? I was guessing based on her industry standards and I know I'm not far off.

i only bring it up because they are saying "well i know so and so who make x and cannot afford y". just food for thought. carry on.
eta: am I the only one who doesnt' discuss how much they make or spend with their friends? i would be taken aback if one of my friends point blank asked how much $$ I made or how much my mortgage was.
