out of curiosity, what kind of jobs are these making 250K? i assume its also relative to where you live as im sure manahattan salaries are considerabely higher than LI. Also, years of experience ofcourse is taken into consideration.
Sales positions
Banking, finance, advertising (both creative and account work), television production.
However, there is always someone, younger and smarter and many of these jobs are volatile. One must keep on their toes to hold on to positions that bring in that kind of money. It is a highly competitive market.

A lot of that could be people owning their own business.... even people who own small business can make that in a year.... owning your own business is risky but can be VERY rewarding

I would also say that owning real estate (commercial and/or residential) certainly makes a difference.

yup... i agree... my parents own their own business ( a garden center) and make that much..... its VERY VERY hard work, but obviously VERY rewarding for them as far as money and time off ( its only a seasonal business, so they are off for about 4 months a year...)

My father owned his own business too and we all grew up very well and he didnt have debt. But his responsibilities were endless - to his employees and the government.

I don't know much about having your own business, but if you make $250, wouldn't a big part go to health insurance and retirement plans if you are on your own for those?

yup... everyone always tells my parents " oh, it must be soo nice to work with flowers all the time, and have al that time off"... and it is, but theres A LOT more that goes into it ( like my dad not sleeping because hes worried about the greenhouse temperatures, or an employee not showing up when they're supposed to...)

yup! my parents pay something like $10 K a year for healthy insurance... for just the 2 of them ( because they don't have any full time, salaried employees) . thats why, as a teacher, i never get it when other teachers complain that they might be asked to pay for part of their benefits...... i wouldn't mind AT ALL!! i see first hand what insurance COULD cost...

Considering I make almost half of the lowest one on there, I consider that one to be well-paying.....
ETA: y husband also makes less than the bottom #. We own our own house on LI (it may be tiny but its still a house), have 2 kids, have two car payments. And we are getting by - barely - but getting by all the same.
$75k is like a dream to me!

I, too, make less than half of the bottomn number, but compared to how much I was making in theatre, I feel RICH now. I think I have a really decent job with a decent salary.
But I still think the number with the WOW factor for me, personally is $50K. Fh has always made more than that...but to me $125K is a fortune and what I would consider someone who is "rich." It's amazing how much perspectives differ

I truly think it depends on your situation, when we were renting and had no kids, we could easily live on 50K, now that we have 3 kids, a house, cars, school tuition, 100K would NEVER cut it for us, hell, 150k would NEVER pay our bills
eta- my husband pays his worker 35k alone

Hmmm, I think your cutoffs are too close and you should've made them broader. However, I do believe to each his own and like other posters said it's all relative.

This in my opinion is truly the key. Once you factor kids into the equation (and even factoring in daycare/nanny, I believe they get more expensive as they get older), things get really expensive. Before we had kids and a house, we literally saved my entire salary and almost 1/2 of dh's. Doing this for a few years allowed us to build a tremendous downpayment and a big nest egg. Ahh those were the days.
In terms of the jobs, I agree with all the above fields listed. I also believe that people/couples making over $250K, generally have years of experience.

Jennifer- remember you are young and just starting out- when I was your age I was making 1/2 what I make 5 years later-so for you to compare yourself to people that have been working for years- it isn't fair to yourself

Im not "young" at all and I think $125K a year for one person is a fortune...... And Kinda feel anyone who doesnt is off their rocker....
Unless they have lived a very well to do lifestyle previously and to me with more then $125K a year that would mean , huge home, designer clothes and fancy cars...
because I could afford all of that on that salary.

on Long Island? as one person? buying a house today? I just bought a home (my first house) on LI, and its not huge, i dont wear designer clothes and drive a Nissan. And FH and I make a touch more that that combined, and its tuff, but we make it work. we arent living the high life, thats for sure.

for 1 person you would be living well- but not in a huge a house, with a mercedes payment and shopping every weekend
most likley a nice condo or co-op, and $50K car and some shopping at bloomies- but not all designer- there is no way

I dunno, I would be pretty darn happy with a condo and a car that costs half that much. The extra 25K could go right in the bank for that house I cannot afford right now. If I didnt own a house, I could never justify a car I am too scared to drive, damage and repair.

I guess I was asking because I see alot of posts saying "I/DH has a well paying job", but that means different things to different people. As we can see from the responses, some people think 50k is well paid, while others think 250k is well paid. I think DH is well paid, but others may not. Just wanted opinions
I probably wouldn't say we're doing well for ourselves. I would say we're getting by.
When I say someone is well off, it's definitely over $250K.
The person who I described as doing *extremely well* for herself, if I had to guess, makes over $300K & plus probably half of that in bonus. At one point when discussing her DH, she said his bonus the year before was $6.9 million. They are both in finance. I love her to death & she deserves every penny & ounce of happiness that comes her way. She's not lucky. She worked her tail off for it from a full scholarship at school to studying like crazy. We got the same grades, she had more ambition than I ever had.

Re: "Well paying jobs"
I think DH and I make good money. But in LI, it's still a struggle. I only wish we had more. I think everyone could agree with that.
No matter how much you make, you always want more or need more.
My boss probably makes $500K a year and she is still frugal with her money. she decides where to spend it and where not to spend it.
her Dh works at the firm too and he probably makes about $300K a year.
Still they are down to earth people who won't spend like crazy.

I don't think there is a one size fits all answer- everyone has there own lifestyle and wants, needs
some people might live great on less then $100K- some people might struggle with $200K
I def agree with the more you make the more your spend- for myself I am trying to get out of that cycle and live on less and save more-
Agreed friends of ours make an extremely high salary but can't afford a house because they have the best of everything else...mercedes, chanel, gucci, LV and a $30K tax bill
Mo money mo problems

while it definately costs alot for insurance and retirement plans those are business costs....the $250 would be salary or profits while those other costs you mentioned would most likely be in the cost of doing business and come before salary or profits are calculated
