wow, I'm utterly shocked on how some of you talk about some of this people.
seriously, talk about discrimination. when they start paying taxes like the rest of us, maybe there won't be any feelings of resentment.
Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Learn the language & become legal. I think it is BS that we go to work and have to pay for them, their kids schooling, medical etc.

It not discrimination, I have and love all of my hispanic friends...but I dont think we should act like the world stop for one day of protest...come on~!
It seemed to work for the civil rights movement.
The Civil Rights Movement was at a peak from 1955-1965...lasted much longer than ONE day!
I am aware that the movement was longer then one day. This debate has been going on for more then ONE day. My point is that this is just the beginning of the actions to be taken.
You think so? I would think there might be some fear in taking such action...loss of wages or job replacements...IMO
some may protest but I am sure there are many who cannot afford to do such....

That is what you are missing.... they are marching so they CAN pay taxes.. so they CAN be legal.. and yet you say, nope- you didn't do it the right way- so just stay illegal? Get out? That isn't a reality.
we have two options here: 1) let them be legal and pay taxes 2) let them continue to be illegal and "drain" the system

But why is it that they are fighting to be legal NOW and not all of the years that they have been here without visas, not applying for citizenship, etc. But, now that they can potentially be thrown out they want to become legal. I'm sure that's not the case for all everyone, but lots of people.

They've always been illegal- and actually Clinton iin 1996 made it much harder for them to become legal if they overstayed their visas- so one slip up and you can't come back.
They are marching now b/c there are bills in the house and senate trying to make staying illegally a felony.
The President wants to start a documented guest worker program- many in his party are against it.
Then, there is the McCain-Kennedy bill which would grant, in stages, many illegals the chance to become legal, pay into system ,etc.
In the past few months it has become a very hot political issue, thus the marches & demonstrations....

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'
First off, I think the protests, changing of the national anthem and such are going to make people resent these people even more.
Second, whomever said why are latinos being targeted on here, it is because they are the ones raising their voices the most. So when I think immigrant right now, thats who I think of immediately, but I know there are many other nationalities as well..
Third, I think it is totally wrong, and these people should be sent back to their countries if they are illegal..for a couple reasons, first, they are here illegally, its against the law, they are fighting to change a law, yet they themselves are breaking one. Second, no matter what jobs they do, they are still straining the economy for people that do pay in to the system in one way or the other, healthcare, schools etc. There are plenty of willing and able people that would do their jobs that are here legally, I don't care what anyone says. Third, why should we open the door and say ok, stay, we'll look over the fact that you snuck in to the country when there are MANY people that are waiting, doing it the legal way and it has taken some of them 10 years?? One of my students mothers has been waiting TEN years for her greencard, she did everything legally, but we're going to say sorry you have to wait longer because all these other people are here now..its not fair to ALL the people that did do it the legal way and some of which are still waiting.
I also spoke with a girl who is an immigrant, she came here legally when she was younger and she herself thinks all this is unfair. Why should we just let people in when people like her and her family did it the right way?? She told me her family was thrilled to come to this country and took pride in learning english to sing the national anthem, now people are too lazy to learn it and feel they'll just change it. We wouldn't go to russia and tell them to change their anthem to English.
Nobody ever said life was easy, and sometimes we have to wait for stuff we want, if people want to come here, legally do it and wait it out, don't just expect because your here the LAWS of the Land should change.

you seem to be missing one big thing- there is no way for this country to kick out 11 million + people- it is impossible.
So now what?

Well, the same could be said on how are we going to go about making ALL 11+ million of them instantly legal. Its going to cost no matter which way it goes, but it can not continue the way it is!! It's not fair!!

I completel agree. I am came here from another country when I was little. My parents worked very hard to come here legally. They learned the national anthem in English and taught it me. I just don't understand how people who have no right to be here want to tell our government what to do.

I read a lot. I try to read unbiased (non politcal) reports of what's going on in the world- I hate when people like make these dumb assumptions of things and yet don't really KNOW what is going on in the world... We need to know what's going on in the country & in the World- even if we don't like it or agree with it.

Unfortunately that is because the media is either run be liberals or crazy right wingers- you can't ever get like the real story.. it's quite annoying.. you basically have to like read everything and then figure it out in the middle.

I certainly do think so. It may not all result in an action like today, but until this bill is repealed then I expect to see other types of protests.

I didn't realize speaking English was a pre-requesite to being able to claim a moral injustice...
I feel bad for all those people who are deaf or mute- they can't ever hope to speak english.
I have an idea- maybe we can put them on the farms and let THEM pick the oranges.

I think being deaf or mute, is just a bit different, no? As for English, everyone should learn it to live here.

I have been watching the news and many of them are complaining in English. I find it suspect if that is the only interview that the news channel you are watching showed.

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'
What I wonder about is why so many legal educated immigrants are not doing anything to help the people of their native countries. I would think that rather than fighting for so many people to become legal in the US, they would be more interested in trying to solve what is going wrong in their own countries to cause so many people to leave. I think that is the bigger issue.

ETA: Why are people trying to group all immigrants into the tax evading, non-English speaking category? Isn't it possible that a lot are legal and speak English, but still feel that our system needs to be revised?
