What is going on? People act as if all the sudden immigrants, illegal and legal, just suddenly appeared. This country has been built on the backs of such people. While I think it would be great if they were all legal our government makes that difficult and I can understand not wanting to wait. As far as the tax burden, let's not pretend that many of our own citizens are a burden upon our country's economy. The illegals aren't the ones sucking our welfare system dry and they certainly aren't the only ones not paying taxes. As for our hospitals going out of business, that is due in large part to pharmacutical companies and their price gouging on drugs.
QUOTE] do 2 wrongs make it right? yes, there are many dishonest people here who are citizens, but many more who are not.
I would honestly love to know the number of tax evading citizens versus the number of illegal immigrants. I think that the people causing America the most grief econmically are Americans.

Yes, I noticed that I only had THREE students. I teach adult ESL and most of my students stayed home.

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'
This debate could go on for ages.
As far as immigrants wanting to be part of our culture, you guys should come to my ESL class one day and meet my students. We all like to pass judgement about the immigrants, but I will venture to say that not many people here have ever even tried to have a meaningful conversation with someone just because they don't speak English very well.
SO many of my students love being here. Love the opportunities to work, go to school and be part of something great. They WANT to pay taxes and many of them do (albeit with illegal SS$#s). They come to my class to learn English so they can have better opportunities and they really do want to do things the right way.
With all of the recent amnesty talk, I had made my upper level students write about it and what they have here compared to home.
So much of this just boils down to who needs the most help. Sometimes have quotas isn't realistic. It's like hiring a minority because you need one in your company. Hire the person who is best for the job. Help the people who need the help. I understand there are rules but rules should be flexible to the changes of population.

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'
About why they wave their flags:
I know so many Americans wonder why immigrants who fled their countries wave the flags of those same countries. I think a lot has to do with comradery. Imagine yourself alone in a foreign place and you meet someone from your home town. You are elated! Someone knows your home, knows your language and maybe even knows your friend. To show that you belong to some group and someone cares about you, you wave the flag of your country. Whether good or bad, that flag represents the people and when you are here alone, that flag means there are countrymen who will help you.
I grew up in Brentwood and although some people say some HORRIBLE things about Brentwood, if I was in a foreign place and met someone from Brentwood, I would be so happy to see them and maybe if I had my old school sweatshirt, I would wear it. It would mean that I belong to a group somewhere.
We all want to feel wanted. I think the flags and patriotism make the immigrants feel like a small piece of a bigger picture.

The Civil Rights Movement was at a peak from 1955-1965...lasted much longer than ONE day!

That is what you are missing.... they are marching so they CAN pay taxes.. so they CAN be legal.. and yet you say, nope- you didn't do it the right way- so just stay illegal? Get out? That isn't a reality.
we have two options here: 1) let them be legal and pay taxes 2) let them continue to be illegal and "drain" the system

I am aware that the movement was longer then one day. This debate has been going on for more then ONE day. My point is that this is just the beginning of the actions to be taken.
