Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'

What I wonder about is why so many legal educated immigrants are not doing anything to help the people of their native countries. I would think that rather than fighting for so many people to become legal in the US, they would be more interested in trying to solve what is going wrong in their own countries to cause so many people to leave. I think that is the bigger issue.
Um- for the same reason why the Irish people left Ireland during the famine ... because they are seeking something better.
That argument isn't logically sound- all immigrants came here to find something better- if, throughout history, people were satisfied 100% with where they lived, or stayed to make it better, there wouldn't be a USA... well, actually there would be, but it would still have Native Amerians ....

I can't speak for everyone, but in my family, the sucess of the American citizens has definitely trickled down to the family in the Philippines. My mom paid for the college educations of nearly ALL of my cousins. She isn't wealthy, but the educations are not expensive. They are the best educated people in both sides of my family- engineers, accountants, etc. And what jobs do they have now? One is an accountant, another is a banker. They were lucky, because the rest are umployed. Even the lucky two who have jobs aren't in good place, compared to American jobs. There is no health insurance, nothing like workers comp, FMLA, etc. So even while they are makign ends meet, it is not what we would consider sucessful. In the Philippines, it's largely who you know that will determine oyur sucess; which isn't even guaranteed b/c of the political turmoil. Depressing.

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'
I agree that all people who live in the US should share the same freedoms. However....if you don't pay taxes...then you don't deserve the same help from the government as those who do pay taxes.
I used to work for a company that hired many legal and non legal immigrants....many of the non legals choose to NOT file proper paperwork to be here legally because they didn't want to pay income taxes.
At the same token...I understand than many US Business will suffer if they were unable to hire illegal immigrants. I also understand that many illegal immigrants are here in the US because conditions were worse for them in their countries. They simply want a better life for themselves....and don't we all want a better life for ourselves?
I am friends with someone who has been in this country for 7 yrs. She only recently filed her paperwork.....she is glad that she did because she is currently pregnant and the last thing in the world she wants is to have her baby outside the US. She described to me the hospital conditions....and how women who have just given birth are left in beds to bleed...(sorry TMI) Women who have C-Sections are still cut vertical instead of the Bikini Cut...and they don't receive proper pain management.
although I don't agree with everything our governement does....I'm still glad I live here.

First off, I think the protests, changing of the national anthem and such are going to make people resent these people even more.
Second, whomever said why are latinos being targeted on here, it is because they are the ones raising their voices the most. So when I think immigrant right now, thats who I think of immediately, but I know there are many other nationalities as well..
Third, I think it is totally wrong, and these people should be sent back to their countries if they are illegal..for a couple reasons, first, they are here illegally, its against the law, they are fighting to change a law, yet they themselves are breaking one. Second, no matter what jobs they do, they are still straining the economy for people that do pay in to the system in one way or the other, healthcare, schools etc. There are plenty of willing and able people that would do their jobs that are here legally, I don't care what anyone says. Third, why should we open the door and say ok, stay, we'll look over the fact that you snuck in to the country when there are MANY people that are waiting, doing it the legal way and it has taken some of them 10 years?? One of my students mothers has been waiting TEN years for her greencard, she did everything legally, but we're going to say sorry you have to wait longer because all these other people are here now..its not fair to ALL the people that did do it the legal way and some of which are still waiting.
I also spoke with a girl who is an immigrant, she came here legally when she was younger and she herself thinks all this is unfair. Why should we just let people in when people like her and her family did it the right way?? She told me her family was thrilled to come to this country and took pride in learning english to sing the national anthem, now people are too lazy to learn it and feel they'll just change it. We wouldn't go to russia and tell them to change their anthem to English.
Nobody ever said life was easy, and sometimes we have to wait for stuff we want, if people want to come here, legally do it and wait it out, don't just expect because your here the LAWS of the Land should change.
Very well said. I completely agree.

Re: Well todays the day...U.S. Prepares for 'Day Without Immigrants'
I think another issue to consider is once the illegal immigrants become legal, will they then take full advantage of our welfare system? Since they don't have SS# they can;t have Medicaid, WIC, or be on welfare, but once they are legal couldn't they collect it? I wonder just how many would stop working and start collecting government assistance. And yes, I understand that plenty of citizens already collect assitance of some kind, but wouldn't adding 11 million people whom are eligible for assistance put an even greater burden on our govt.?

Same here, Red. I called my sister in Baltimore, who had no idea there were strikes of any kind. Thats a college kid for ya. My brother in Phoenix said it was just another day for him, too. BUT, he is in HS, and other than school he doesn't see much of Phoenix.

Look at this crap, I just was watching the news, and they are complaining to the news caster in SPANISH! They can't even speak English! Learn English THEN complain!
I didn't realize speaking English was a pre-requesite to being able to claim a moral injustice...
I feel bad for all those people who are deaf or mute- they can't ever hope to speak english.
I have an idea- maybe we can put them on the farms and let THEM pick the oranges.
Wow, moral injustice? I don't think its morally corrupt to execute punishment to those that commit crimes. Moral injustice is what was done to the African Americans during the civil rights movement. Moral injustice is what happened to the innocent men, women and children slaughtered during the Holocaust. Moral injustice, is the genocide that is occuring in Darfur today. Moral injustice, IS NOT being deported because you entered another country illegally.
