We're Getting A Dog!!! Update Page 2!
Probably, as long as she (Daisy) passes the "cat test" tomorrow.
She's a black lab mix, very cute, 10 months old, good with kids (we took DD to see her at NSAL tonight), housebroken and can respond to simple commands.
DH has had dogs before, and he's been dying to get one since we got married and I finally gave in. He looks like a kid at Christmas tonight. DD looooves dogs, so she's going to be excited too.

I'm never getting a dog, or any pet for that matter, from NSAL. They just put us through hoops of fire (which I expected), but they "lied" to me about something my DH told them when he was filling out the paperwork.
A girl called me to confirm our address and that I wanted DH to bring the dog home and all that jazz. Then she says "and when is your mother-in-law moving in with you?" I said, obviously joking, "Well if she's moving in, no one told me, I guess the wife is the last to know." I was laughing, so obviously, this is news to me and DH NEVER said his mom was moving in.
Turns out my MIL adopted a dog from there 4 years ago (which she still has) and she told them back then that she has a cat allergy. So they try to trick me into telling them that my MIL is moving in with us (which would happen over my dead body AND I'd throw her to the curb before I kicked a pet out, lol). What are they the FBI?!?!?!?
So then they say they want doctor's notes from each of our doctors (DH's, mine and DD's) not a fax, but they want DH to go pick up the letters and bring the notes back to them stating that none of us have pet allergies.
I will not be adopting from them ever. Little Shelter and Bide-A-Wee didn't have any dogs that matched our crriteria. I'm open to suggestions of other adoption agencies. We're very sad right now. We already bought a bunch of stuff and food for "Daisy".
We're just so upset because that dog would have been a perfect fit with our family. DH was looking forward to today, he was so excited and DD has been talking about "puppies" all day.

They gave us a hard time too! They were concerned about our schedules and we tried to convince them that our dog wouldn't be home alone long hours at a time and that it would only be 2 or 3 days at the most. I understand that they want to be sure that no one returns the dogs . But I have heard from so many people that they have given them a hard time as well.

Oh Jer, I'm so sorry!  That does seem alittle excessive...
Check out the Kent Animal Shelter, they have a ton of dogs and get puppies in frequently.

I've been there before and was turned off by their process as well. Not sure what town you are in but I was at the Brookhaven Shelter the other day and they have lots of dogs- big and small.

My mother was going to adopt a cat from there many years ago...she didn't tell her DH before she went and when they said they were going to call the house and ask her DH if bringing the cat home was okay, she said yes - then told my sister to go call him and tell him they were calling. Well, one of the people there heard my mom's conversation w/ my sister and told them that they couldn't take the cat home AND they were banned from there forever. They were going to make a file w/ my mom's name and address on it and mark it that she can never adopt from them.
Pretty bizarre policies if you ask me!

NSAL drives me nuts. Personal reasons for the most part, and I would always tell anyone to go there before buying from a store or something, BUT....they have on more than one occassion done something that made me pick up the phone & give them a piece of my mind.
Kent is awesome. Also check out your local municiple shelters. Unfortunately most of them are high-kill, and have a high overturn. Check out Petfinder for some listings.

I am confused....What does your MIL's cat allergy have to do with you adopting a DOG. Even if she was going to move in with you.

wow, that seems a little excessive. im surprised they acted that way. ive adopted from them twice and never a problem. im sorry this happened. it really stinks.

I do not like NSAL, we had a problem with them when I was a kid and my family adopted a sick cat from them.
I would try the town shelters, there are so many doggies who need homes and so many of the town shelters just can't accommodate them all and well, the outcome is not good. I am sure you will be able to find a dog at one of the shelters that suits your needs.
I am sorry you had to go through this disappointment with NSAL.

that stinks, i am so sorry to hear it. are you sure it wasnt a mistake? either way your MIL does NOT live u nor is she going to so why do YOU, the owners, need dr notes???????

That's what I was going to say too!!! This makes absolutely NO sense at all!!! 
I'm so sorry, there are plenty of dogs out there, you'll find the right one at a good shelter in no time!!!

Oh wow. I'm so sorry. I know they have to be careful about the people they adopt animals too but it's such a shame when they mess up and let a good potential family get away.
What kind of dog are you looking for?

one year ago we adopted our black lab/mix from NSAL and they gave us a hard time as well... it was rather annoying and we were almost at the point where we gave up. . i can see being very cautious, but they were obsessive.. 
i recomend you try Little Shelter!!
we got our childhood dog from there!!
