I was spanked. When I was little, I got a swat on my butt a few times, a smack on the leg, etc. My grandma used to chase us around with a wooden spoon, lol.

I did get memorably smacked a few times and it was a learning experience. I called my mom a bi&^h once, and she smacked me right across the face..never did that again.

And another time, I was 18 and my mom was driving me to school, and we were arguing, and I tried to be cool and told her to f herself as I got out of the car, and she jumped across the seat and started wailing on me, hands and smacks flying everywhere. (My mom is 120 lbs, soft spoken, so she couldn't have actually hurt me) And at my school, all the kids waited in the front until the doors were opened, so EVERYONE saw. I totally was an 18 year old that got spanked, and I deserved it.

So, I don't see systematically relying on spanking as discipline, but I could see myself reacting physically if my kid was anywhere as mouthy as I was....I hear karma is a b, so I will probably have a kid just like me.

What you described is TOTALLY different than spanking a young child IMO

If my son wants to calls me a ***** or curse me getting out of the car as a teenager you can bet your ass I would smack him in the face in front of his friends

Yes and I don't know.

I got spanked, the wooden spoon and the belt.

I was still mouthy and a brat to my parents, but it WAS pretty effective. I was a good student and very respectful to my teachers and other adults like friend's parents/coaches/relatives, etc because I didn't want word getting back to my parents.

Until I actually had this child I was so against it. I never in a million years thought I would spank her. But I have and I am pretty sure I will again. It's the only thing that works. I use it as a threat. I hate to admit it works. I have only spanked her probably 5 times in her life . Now i just walk around with the spoon in my hand. She gets the point. I know this sounds terrible. I hope to God I don't live to regret it. . I do not beat her. It's one wack.

I was not spanked as a kid. I probably should have been though.

Our kids get occasionally spanked, a few light hits to the butt. It is very effective.

My dad maybe hit me 2x my entire life. Once when I broke something really expensive of his & another when I told him F U. I guess I deserved it. Those are the only 2 times I remember.

My mom used to hit us alot but we were out of control. We were always throwing tantrums, screaming, fighting. All I know is that I held major resentment towards her for years for it & so did my sibling. We never heard an apology for it.

I have spanked my older dc's bottom a couple of times & felt terrible afterwards. My DH has never spanked but was spanked too- probably not as much as I was though.

i was never hit growing up. i got the look and the stern voice. i always said i would NEVER touch my kid. but being a single mom sometimes pushes my limits. i have smacked his tush twice. i hated myself after for it. he rolled around on the floor holding his butt crying. i do realize that i did it more because i was frustrated and i needed to let it out. now i try to walk away and calm down. worst case scenario, now that he knows what it feels like, i may use it as a threat. that usually works now. so im hoping i never have to do it again. now that i have a boyfriend who helps me i get to tag him in when i feel like im going to lose control and i can take a breather.

Yes and Yes.

My DS (who is 3) is an extremely difficult child and has been spanked. It's literally the only 'action' we take that will guarantee a response from him when he's being extremely naughty. I hate it when it happens, but in our little world and our particular situation, it is absolutely necessary.

I don't judge people who choose not to spank. I wish we were a household that didn't have to spank, and I hope to get there someday...but for right now, we have to use it on occasion. I HATE when people judge us for doing it, because you've never walked a day in our shoes. We realize the steps that we're taking and are very conscious of not over-spanking for silly, mundane things.

ETA: We have never had to spank DD (who is 4 years old). She is the polar opposite of her brother and is very responsive to time-outs and things being taken away.

I was smacked (in the face) once when I was..14 or so. I said something stupid and I totally 100% deserved it. My bff was with me and laughed afterwards because it was so out of character for my mom. Other then that no, I was never smacked.. not even a tap on the butt from what I remember.

Will I smack. I doubt it. I can't even smack my dog on the butt with the newspaper when he does something REALLY REALLY bad. Unless my LO does something absolutely stupid like running into the middle of the street in front of traffic it might be an initial reaction after hugging him. It's just odd for me and so not in my nature.

I wasn't spanked as a child, I was hit w/closed fists and smacked across the face. I had a friend who was beaten w/any and every kitchen related object (spoons, ladles, even a blender). It was horrible watching her and her siblings get beaten. I know I wasn't a perfect kid, I def have had my moments, but I don't think any child deserves to be hit like that. Right now, as a mom to an 11 month old, I cringe w/the thought of even ever spanking him, of course any other type of physical discipline is out of the question. I just hope and pray when he gets older that time outs and other ways are more effective so any type of spanking will not be necessary.

lol, I know its different. I was more responding to the "who spanks an 18 year old?" comment. And the answer is....my mom.

I was spanked and I will never hit my kids. IMO, spanking is an adult temper tantrum and abuse.
