All day? 16 and hope they will have a part time job. Before that they will be in camp all summer or working at a camp. After school, 14.
Eta: if you can't pay for camps, CIT, or whatever else to keep them busy, you don't have much of a choice.
Well from my experience, and other friends who have tweens and teens, the kids stop wanting to go to camp when they are in middle school. It not as much as how much it costs than the kids get bored with it after a certain age.

And unless they can get to work on their own, a part time job would be difficult for a tween/teen to have.

All day 17, with a driver's license and car for emergencies. For an hour or two 12.
Do you have kids? How old are they? Do you and your kids father work FT and not have family around? Not being snarky just curious cause this seems old. And I don't get the drivers license thing.
I think by 17 a kid needs some trust no?
and you can't start them off at age 17. It has to be done a little at a time. How anyone thinks they can not allow their kids to do something (unless it is a danger to them) like staying home until they are 17 but then in a few months go off to college to live on their own is beyond me.
Being home alone all day is a bit much for an15 year old. They need to be kept busy. It's not about trust, it's about being bored to tears and finding trouble. College they will be busy with classes , working, and studying all day. Very different
Not all. My teen never got in trouble and always found something to do. Either going over to a friend, talking to them on their phone, sleeping.

I have two kids. Our family is over an hour and a half from our home. We live oos from the rest of our family. I absolutely feel for you. But I would not leave my kids home alone all day. The police have arrested parents for neglect for having a 12 year old play alone on their front lawn. To me, I would be ok with a 12 year old alone for a few hours. But all day, no. You said all day. I would not want to be locked inside of a house all day and I am sure a kid would not want that either. If they were coming home from school and the parent came home at 5 that would be different to me because they are in school for most of the day, and home for a few hours. But over the summer. Nope I am sorry. There are too many ways for a kid to get in trouble.
Gotcha. But stil a huge difference between 12 and 17.
So will you have a sitter for your kids til they are 17 on school days off like snow days, if they are mildly sick or a random day off?
Do you work from home or have a lot of time off? [/QUOTE ] I would work from home. Maybe I would be ok at 16 to be home for a day when they were sick. But I am fortunate to have flexibility in my schedule. But I would not want my kid sitting home alone for the summer no matter the age. They would either be in camp or if older expected to have a job or internship.
If you were not home, the only way a 16 yr. old could get to a job is if something is close by. I have one now and know what it is like to have them home all summer.

Yes but not all kids want to do that. I offered that to my tween but I also had to find the transportation to get them there and back.

It all depends as the CIT was not at the camp my kids went to. It was about 20 mins away and my child had to be there after I was supposed to be at work and picked up in the middle of the day. It would not work for us. Their camp was close to work and opened before I needed to be at work and still open when I got off.

That's too bad. Kids home alone all day without supervision is a recipe for disaster. In my area , kids are not home. I would prefer to pay someone to drive the kids to camp (for day camp or work). Many families carpool too.

Well then I guess I am lucky as my teen has been home for years. The only problem I have had is making a mess in the house. Not everyday they were alone either as most kids, IME have friends they sleep over their house or hang out at (I have taken them to friends houses on my lunch hour and have co workers who have done the same).

So when would they be able to learn to be more independent if you would wait until they were college age to let them stay home alone all day?

Re: What age would you leave kids home alone all day while you work?
I was probably 12 when I started saying home from say 9-4 on days school ws closed and such. I started babysitting at 13 for a 4month old.
My nephew is 14 now and I am not sure if he stays for a full day but for 5 hours or so, yes. He keeps busy, watches TV, plays xbox, makes food, and of course dont forget kids that age generally sleep until 11 ish. LOL
I think waiting until 17 is totally excessive, but thats my opinion.
I think it also depends on the # child this is, sounds silly but I was child #3 in my family, life was different and they were more relaxed by the time I was 12. And we had a very protective dog at the time! LOL

Re: What age would you leave kids home alone all day while you work?
I think whatever or not there are other children in the home makes a BIG difference. For example, when DS is 13 I would hope he would be mature enough to be left alone for a few hours. In our family, he would also have a 10 yr old sister to contend with. With all their bickering and antics, I don't think I would feel comfortably leaving them for more than 2 hours ... definitely not the whole day.
Independence needs to be taught gradually so kids can learn how to deal with new situations safely and logically.

Jr high probably. I was left alone for a few hrs here and there by 3rd grade.
By 17 I was left alone for the weekend when my parents brought my sis to college.

Same here. One of us would take a day or work from home. I just don't feel comfortable leaving a sick kid home alone all day.

What age would you leave kids home alone all day while you work?
My kids are 12 and 15 and stay home all day alone. They did it last year as well. They are totally fine. My oldest has a part time job in the evenings (when I am home to take her) and my youngest got too bored with camp. And, to be honest, I am not going to pay almost full price for him to be a CIT and do all the grunt work! (I personally think a CIT should be free, but whatever).
Aside from being a little bored at times, they have been doing great. They make their own lunch, call me if they need something, and know that neighbors are there (if they have an emergency). My daughter got a lot of summer work for her upcoming AP classes, so she uses the days to work on it.

This is more IME also with kids these ages. I think it is hard for parents whose kids are not of age yet to pick an age and I get that. I do think that a little at a time is so much better than, go get out now, you are 18 and should be independent lol. I don't know how you get that way without being able to do things throughout the years.

Agree. Never say never until you are there. I think the 12 and 15 yo siblings is perfectly reasonable.
And this thread is now making me thinking of the effects that "helicopter" parenting has had on our society and kids who are entering and out of college now.

Exactly. I was reading a board one time, can't remember where but it was not here as there were a lot of men on it but the question was, what age would you allow your child to go to the mall with their friends. I was amazed at these answers. 18, 21. I really hope they were not serious but many were. How do you hold your kid back for that many years and then expect them to go live on their own. I was married at 21 lol.
