I absolutely think the punishment fit the crime. She violated her probation. The punishment is laid out.

There is no question that this chick will be getting top-notch treatment from everyone (inmates to guards) trying to befriend a celebrity. IF anything the guards would see it as a future bodyguard gig.

I don't think the sentence is harsh. First, she drove drunk. The judge was lenient and gave her probation. Then, she violates her probation (at least) twice. More often than not, people are given jail time for violating probation once. I don't think it's harsh to punish someone who obviously has no respect for the law and doesn't take the temrs of her probation seriously.

I don't agree... I think the inmates and guards have the same feelings we do.. she's a spoiled brat and she isn't better than anyone else. I think they will torment her... hence why she was given a private cell in basically a seperate wing.

the judge was harsh to give her 3 years probation in my opinion

most first time DWI offenders get community service and an Alcohal treatment class plus lic suspended to 3 to 6 months

probation for a DWI and now Jail time is not the norm

ask any lawyer in NY-

Check this out... I just got this breaking news update email from CNN:

-- Preacher's wife Mary Winkler, who killed her husband with a shotgun blast to the back as he lay in bed, is sentenced to three years -- 210 days in prison and the rest on probation.

This lady shoots her husband in the back of the head with a shot gun and gets 210 days in jail.... still think it's a fair sentence and she was treated like a "normal" citizen?

How bizarre is this... I wrote the above like 40 minutes ago or so.. now this is posted on x17online....

"Paris is now safely behind bars at the Lynwood Correctional Facility, where she's been ordered to serve out the rest of her 45 days.

On another note, Mary Winkler, the woman who killed her preacher husband, has been ordered to serve seven months in jail for shooting her husband in the back, but due to the time she already served, means she's got about another 2-3 months left (or less than twice Paris' sentence) which could be served in a mental facility. How fair does Paris' initial sentence seem now? "

On another note.. is she now serving out the 45 days or the 23?

In Nassau county most likely you will not see jail for the first offense. You violate your probation which is usually 1 year for a first offense, then there is a real possibility of going to jail. You also have to meet with a probation officer once a week and submit to testing. I doubt she was even given that part of the probation. We would have heard about it in the tabloids. She was already given preferential treatment due to her celebrity status. She took it for granted..she thought she was above the law. She has always gotten what she wanted. I agree with the judge.

btw-my friend who had one DWI and leaving the scene got three years probation and suspended license for 2 years. Nobody was hurt and there was no property damage. He pees in a cup and submits to a breathalyzer each time he goes. He is not allowed to leave the county for 3 years.

1- this wasn't her first offense... she was violating her probation from a previous DWI offense.

2- probation and jail time for DWI should be the norm and hopefully after this, they will be..

she was given probation for the DUI- which was her first offense- I don't think she should be on probation in the first there- therefore nothing to violate

I don't even like her- and I think she is being treated harshly

I don't think you should have to go to jail for your first offense- unless there was an accident involved

the jails are already over crowded with non-violent drug offenders - I would prefer people get treatment

ok- call a CA lawyer and ask what the sentence normally is

Nicole Richie already has 1 DWI- and she didn't get jail time for it

Michelle Rodgrez has a few- and got in and out in 2 hours

She's not in NY. States have different laws and punishments for drunk driving.

I don't think 3 years of probation is harsh at all. Drunk driving is a serious offense. Considering she could have received jail time, 3 years of probation doesn't seem so bad. Plus, in CA, it looks like 3-5 years of probation is the norm for a first offense.

How many times should she be allowed to violate her probation before she is sentenced to jail?

I think that regardless of whether or not she serves time and where it is served, that she will not have learned anything valuable from this whole thing.

Perhaps she should be force to watch videos of the aftermath of what could happen when people drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Maybe she should see how families are torn apart when they lose loved ones. Or maybe she should spend time with people who have been disfigured and can no longer work to support themselves because stupid people like her can't make better choices. You have money Paris, get a friggin driver. Plenty of regular Joes, like us do that every day.

If you think that it is too harsh. Oh well. I had to watch above said videos when I took a defensive driving class and I did nothing wrong. She did.

Here's a CA law firm's website. It looks like she received a typical punishment for CA.

I cant stand Paris. She always acts like she is "entitled" and above the law. If her name was Joe Shmoe from Idaho she would be tossed in a low security general public jail cell and to the fullest extent. But she's Paris Hilton and it's just not right.

What exactly is just not right?? That you were caught, and now being punished. That she is an heiress and can't even have her extensions in? Please Paris explain to me what is just not right about you doing a crime and now doing your debt to society.

She is serving 45 days in a cell that is seperate from the general public and the area is pretty much for high profile people.

I honestly can not stand her.

Athina Roussel who is the granddaughter of Aristole Onasis is worth billions. She was the richest teenager in the world. What's the biggest thing she did, she got married at 20.

Paris could learn a lot from Athina about being in the public eye.

I definitely think she got what she deserved!!

~ She violated her probation TWICE
~ She never enrolled in a mandatory alcohol treatment program
~ She showed up to court late

They all add up to a blatant disregard for the law!!!!

Re: What are your thoughts on Paris' situation? - Poll

ok, i'm one of the few who think that the punishment was a bit harsh. i agree with leslie that if they really want to teach her a lesson, then let her watch nothing but videos of the results of DUI, of the parents and families of vicitims of DUI, thats more sobering than sitting in a jail cell where i'm sure guards will give her special treatment cause she'll find a way to sweet talk or bribe them.

i have a friend who's dad is a drunk, plain and simple. he has about 7 DUI offenses against him and has served no more than a night in jail each time. and they took away his drivers license. thats it.

i think its Martha all over again. they are being harder on her BECAUSE of who she is. they are making an example of her. which is fine if they want to do it because all of the hollywood "it" girls need a rude awakening. but let her finish it at home, where she cant leave and is stuck in her living room watching a realistic video of what her actions result in!!!!! this whole thing is just dumb and i'm very sad to see that america considers THIS news!!!

I think the 45 days in prison is a fair sentence

Are there worse criminals out there ? Yes -- but get a DUI and violate probabtion...and go to jail for a few months....I see nothing wrong with it

Yes not everyone gets this sentence but they should IMO

However, regardless how I feel about Paris or her sentence I don't want to see her have complete breakdowns. I did feel bad when I saw her crying - she's a mess

If I were her I would just suck it up and do the sentence and get on with my life instead of trying to get out of it -- It is too big of a deal now for the judge to let her go...

I think that they should have made her do community service instead of jail. They should have makde her do something useful with her life, even if it only was for a few years.

community service is an even better idea! at least do a service to the community for her stupidity! her true punishment...the paparazzi following her around in that bright orange jumpsuit!
