what are your thoughts on the kraft mac and cheese controversy?
We buy Annie's organic mac and cheese. Tastes just like Kraft, but without all those pesky gmos!!

Does anyone know if Krafts Velvetta microwave shells mac n cheese have yellow 5 and 6??
They are a Kraft company, so yes most likely. As a family we are boycotting all Kraft brands in my house

what are your thoughts on the kraft mac and cheese controversy?
Honestly dyes and artifical flavorings aside, I prefer the taste of Annies so much more to kraft. I also recommend trying it!

Artificial dyes are not good for anyone, period. I would try annies.
Once consumers start demanding change and stop buying products, companies will listen.
Just be aware of the sodium content, it's pretty high. I used to buy Annies until I noticed the amt of sodium in it. Now I make my own from scratch or just don't give it to DS.

Re: what are your thoughts on the kraft mac and cheese controversy?
I prefer Annie's for DD, she's had that and never Kraft and when she once had Kraft she didn't like it. I figured I'd rather have her prefer the better stuff. She only has m&c sometimes though and we usually blend spinach into it too...
We're not 100% perfect with healthy foods and nutrition but definitely try our best and keep trying

Not a fan of Annie's because of the extremely high sodium, but in a pinch I feel much better serving that instead. Make a large batch from scratch and freeze it in single serving sizes.

I have a question - geniunely, not snarky.
Why is Annie's better? Is it just the dyes? B/c it's still processed 'fake' cheese in a pouch.......isn't it?

ingredients for Annie's: ORGANIC WHEAT MACARONI, CHEDDAR CHEESE (CULTURED PASTEURIZED MILK, SALT, NON-ANIMAL ENZYMES), WHEY, BUTTER, NONFAT MILK, CORNSTARCH, SALT, SODIUM PHOSPHATE, ANNATTO EXTRACT FOR COLOR.
ingredients for Kraft: Enriched Macaroni Product (, WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, FERROUS SULFATE [IRON], THIAMIN HYDROCHLORIDE [VITAMIN B1], RIBOFLAVIN [VITAMIN B2], FOLIC ACID) , Cheese Sauce Mix (, WHEY, MILKFAT, MILK PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, SALT, SODIUM TRIPOLYPHOSPHATE, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF: , CITRIC ACID, LACTIC ACID, SODIUM PHOSPHATE, CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, MILK, YELLOW 5, YELLOW 6, ENZYMES, CHEESE CULTURE)
i believe citric acid, enzymes, milk protein contain MSG.
Enriched macaroni product - very highly processed. Nutrients stripped out which is why they add back so much (therefore enriched)
Also Annie's is organic (at least the one i included) so less likely to contain GMOs

Re: what are your thoughts on the kraft mac and cheese controversy?
In general I try not to give my kids anything with those dyes in it. My DD is big into mac and cheese and is ver picky so it is hard not to give it to her once in a while. That said, I don't give her the Kraft - I always read ingredients and saw that the Kraft had the dyes in it a long time ago. My DD never liked the Annie's so I buy the Amy's frozen mac and cheese when I give it to her. It is organic and non-gmo certified. Actually, I think all the Amy's products are! I've tried to make my own mac and cheese for her but, she won't always eat it - it doesn't have the same consistency. That said - she only has it maybe 1-2 times a month,

I make my own with american cheese. I just add milk butter and american cheese. Super easy & DD loves it. I stopped buying LOL American since it is a product and not "real cheese"

yeah to me this is as easy as anything else since I always have these ingredients in my house
This speaks to my point on people who assume people who aren't straight organic aren't healthy. We do not eat strictly organic but I cook at home and make most things simply not using processed, boxed crap, whole foods, while not all organic, are healthy to me.

Re: what are your thoughts on the kraft mac and cheese controversy?
We use Annie's in a pinch but it's not that hard to make real Mac and cheese. Instead of using the cheese powder warm up milk, butter, and flour until it is a little thick and then slowly stir in shredded cheese. That's your cheese mixture and then you add in the macaroni.

I stopped giving it to my DD a while ago. I find it a lot easier and faster to just add my own cheese. I think it tastes better too

I will have to try the annies white cheddar, I thought the ones I bought were nasty, not sure what flavor it was but it was pretty gross. I got them at target on sale.
I have been making my own using ditalini pasta and WHITE american cheese, a splash of milk and a little butter.
For what it's worth... I will also say that it is only the powdered variety of kraft mac n cheese that has dyes in it. The "deluxe" variety with the liquid cheese ( kraft deluxe and also velveta) uses Annatto for coloring, which is derived from plants. Not that the liquid cheese is probably all that good for you but at least it only uses annatto (and so does Annies)
