What books from childhood were your favorite?

For me, I LOVED LOVED LOVED Anne of Green Gables, and I still do. My copy is battered, the cover is falling off, but I still reread it at least once a year and I probably could have quoted the movie word for word. I just loved the whole series, but the first book was my favorite. Lucy Maud Montgomery's style of descriptive writing was fantastic in my opinion.

One of my favorite gifts was an actual Anne doll from the town of Cavendish, on Prince Edward Island, which is the basis for Anne's town of Avonlea.

It makes me sad that girls today don't always get the chance to read it.

My mom got me the boxset of the Anne of Green Gables books as a kid. I was loving the story until Matthew died and I got so upset that I closed the book and never went near the set again. I don't know why it was so traumatic for me, but I can remember to this day how upset I got.

My favorite book was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I have a beautiful hardcover copy of the two books in one volume that I will never part with.

The Little House series. I read them over and over. I still have my set, but it's falling apart from being read so much so I probably will get dd her own set.

She already has the whole set of My First Little House books, which she loves and we read all the time. Chat Icon

I remember loving the Ramona books when I was younger. And Encyclopedia Brown. And the Babysitters Club. And Judy Blume like PP said. I wasn't into sports so I was always reading.

I also read Encyclopedia Brown! Also, Judy Bloom and Sweet Valley High.

There were also these scary books, they were small, but in a series. I think there were about 30 of them? I forget what they were called, Nightmare something or other. All I remember is every one of the books was black with some kind of scary scene on the front.

Oh god...the babysitters club. I used to read those constantly. it always annoyed me though that they would finish the 8th grade, summer vacatin would come, and in the fall they're back in 8th grade.

I see my students reading the babysitters club now and I sat down and reread one, and was like "WOW not as good as I remember" LOL

Never got into Sweet Valley but i did like The Saddle club

Goosebumps or Fear Street? They were both written by the same author. I think Goosebumps was more for younger kids.

Re: What books from childhood were your favorite?

What a great thread. Definitely Judy Blume. I read all of them a million times, they were all dog-eared. I had the opportunity to meet her in person and talk to her a few years ago...that was so special!

Loved Anne of Green Gables so much.

For fun, there was a series of historical novels from Scholastic, called Sunfire. Each title was a girl's name. I LOVED them and credit them in part of my love of history!

I never heard of Sunfire! Are they like American Girls? I have all of the American Girl books in my classroom, but this sounds like it should be there too!

I don't think it was either - I'm probably a lot older than you though. Chat Icon I'm 37 and read these books probably 25+ years ago.

I went from Betsy and Tacey books to Madeline L'Engle (A Wrinkle In Time, Swiftly Tilting Planet, Wind in the Door) to CS Lewis.. and as a teen my favorite coming of age book was L'Engle's A Ring of Endless Light.

Absolutely anything by Christopher Pike - I looooooooooved his books. Loved them.

I also read a lot of Nancy Drew and there was this one random old book from like the 20s or 30s that I loved - Brave Tales of Real Dogs. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

This was exactly me. Also Nancy Drew. Little House and Nancy Drew were definitely my #1 and #2. When I was pregnant with my first DD, I didn't know what I was having and happened to be in Barnes and Noble one day. I found myself in the kids' section and almost burst with excitement over possibly having a girl and one day buying her the Little House box set. She's four now, and I still can't wait!!!

Re: What books from childhood were your favorite?

I was a voracious reader and read pretty much EVERYTHING (I think we went to the library at least 3 times a week), but my favorites were:

Anne of Green Gables (I have the box set and re-read it regularly as well...there are a lot of tearful moments every time I re-read, but even when I finish the box set it always leaves me wanting more. If there were 10 more books I would read them all!)

The Phantom Tollbooth (LOVE LOVE LOVE! I also remember a cartoon movie version that we used to have on VHS taped off TV that we always watched when home sick. This story (but especially the book) has a special place in my heart)

The Secret Garden

Anything Judy Blume or Beverly Cleary

Little Women

The Boxcar Children series

Anything Roald Dahl, but especially Matilda (which I wrote my college admissions essay about!)

I also pretty much devoured any series, including American Girl books, Babysitters Club & Babysitters Little Sister, Sweet Valley High, pretty much everything. Those aren't things I re-read now, while almost all of those others I would. Can you tell I love to read and especially love children's books? Chat Icon Chat Icon

With the exception of Roald Dahl and the boxcar children, I could have totally written this. Teaching MS and HS ESL allows me to read young adult literature without looking like an idiot.

I'm reading Gone with the Wind right now, and I feel like such a grown up LOLChat Icon
