I have to disagree there...

people may be talking about them but this isn't the kind of thing that will make them SHOP there

SO i really do not see how the PR guy should be given a raise..

But the decision makers need a BRICK to the head...

youd be surprised what would make people shop places. im sure they did their research before announcing this.

and remember - wal mart is THE place to shop in the bible belt. A friend of mine lived in Arkansas for a few years - Wal Mart is where you bought EVERYTHING - and how many non christians do you know in Arkansas? not many- they are probably cheering in the streets.

not that I agree with that, i dont- i just think that as NYers - who live in close proximity to people of all religiions, its easier for us to see how ridiculous this is rather than places in this country that are not as diverse.

Good point - You're right I tend to be a NY Snob and forget people actually live in the rest of the country Chat Icon

There are people of all faiths and cultures in all areas - mostly in the cities - less than NY - of course - but that doesn't mean that's it's ok for a national chain store to deliberately ignore other faiths.

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas

i think that "merry christmas" goes both ways.

I say it to everyone - jews, christians, people who celebrate qwanza

to me, it is a more 'warm and friendly' term for happy holidays.

To people i know who are jewish, i say happy hannakah - if not, i say happy hannakah/christmas- i say both.

i think happy holidays is just so generic, it is such a happy time of year, what is the difference really if merry christmas or happy holidays, happy hannakah or happy qwanza is said?

O.K. My 2 cents...

I am catholic. I think people should just say Happy Holidays. This way you cover EVERYTHING!

BUT.... I work in the bank as most of you know. Last year some older man came in to the bank had a FIT that we had a menorah and a christmas tree and not a nativity scene Chat Icon When we pointed out the christmas tree which could be seen from the tree he told us that it was not a christmas tree it was a "holiday tree" DUMBEST THING EVER! Im sorry its a christmas tree. NOT a holiday TREE. Most Jewish people do not put up trees. Chat Icon

AND in all seriousness... PEOPLE HAVE WAY TO MUCH TIME ON THEIR HANDS TO THINK THIS CRAP UP!

This guy told us he was taking all his money out of the bank the 1st of the year Chat Icon YA OK. Why not do it know... His Money is STILL THERE!

My mom once had a discussion with another teacher in her school about this issue. Her colleague felt a menorah was inappropriate b/c it was a religious symbol, but that a Christmas tree was fine because it doesn't have religious significance! Yes, we do say blessings when we light the menorah, which I guess makes it more "religious", but if there was no Christ, there would be no Christmas, and no Christmas tree, so I think it is just as much of a religious symbol!

Hmmm....in terms of religious symbols I would think the Jewish star would Equate to the Cross. I would think that the Menorah would equate to the Christmas tree. I seriously hope that Wal Mart doesnt start a big controversy over this...soon we wont be able to celebrate any holidays rationally.

Just wondering...does anyone think people are going to stop shopping there bc of this issue?
Me personally, I do think that people will stop shopping there but then again they have had so many issues in the past and it seems they have not been effected by these losses. Wasnt there something with the handicapped a few months back...I cant remember what it was...maybe wheelchair related???

I have only been in a WalMart twice...once in the Poconos and once in Charlotte. I can guarantee I was the only Jew for miles and if someone would have said "Merry Christmas!" to me, I would have said it back. Chat Icon

wal marts are not located in urban areas

I think their customers actually complained about the "happy holiday's" last year and that's why they are going back to merry christmas

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas

I think that this is a ridiculous argument and people need to lighten up.

I doubt that anyone who has wished someone a merry Christmas was saying it to be malicious.

If you want to take the argument even further, maybe we should say nothing at all b/c there are those that are atheists or those whose religions have no holidays this time of year, so even wishing someone a happy holiday may be offensive because they do not celebrate any.

Their idiocy never ceases to amaze me.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to include people of all faith's during such a festive time. It's "Happy Holiday's", not "Drop Dead" Chat Icon

no, it is not....

but if wal-mart closed every store it had in the north east, i don't think it would effect their bottom line very much.

they have over 3500 stores and that is just in the US.....

They are a company that caters mostly to customers that do not live in urban areas.

So Jewish people should not celebrate Channukah and Atheist should be forced to celebrate Christmas?

I know, but I think wal-mart knows who there core customers are and for the most part they are christian. If they made the decision to say merry christmas, there was a reason for it.

I am not saying they are right...don't get me started on Wal-Mart, I have tons of issues with them.

You are correct in a way that if they closed their Northeast stores they would stay in business. They are the #1 retailer in the USA. I have a serious question though, why can you buy a gun at WalMart but not an explicit CD? Chat Icon

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas

My take: As a Jew I am not offended at all if Walmart uses Merry Christmas as a seasonal greeting. I understand the sentiment and I know nobody is trying to convert me. Knowing that the percentage of Jews in the world is very very very small (somewhere between 1-3%) and totalling only 13 million world wide, I would not expect a massive company to cater their advertising and market towards a small population of people. Perhaps stores located in areas with a more diverse population (ie coastal states or HUGE cities) could individualize or tailor its marketing. I would not expect a state located in the middle of the country to say 'Chag Sameach" to me. It simply does not make sense. When someone wishes me well, I simply say thank you. I see no need to correct acts of kindness to suit my faith.

When my father had been ill, we had Jews, Christians, Muslims and other faiths praying for him. I did not say "no thanks, you arent Jewish so it doesnt count." Its sort of the same thing IMO.

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas

I think a lot of people are getting of the subject here. The main issue is that a NATIONAL chain is having a policy that does not embrace all the people of the NATION. It doesn't matter where most of their stores are located -there are people of all different faiths who live in this country - and a name as big as Wal-Mart should respect that.

NO, it is not. It is the HOLIDAY season where people of all faiths celebrate different things - christmas, hanukah, kwanza, etc... that's why Happy Holidays is the more respectful term to use.

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas

From the article.....

The announcement comes a year after religious groups such as The American Family Association and The Catholic League boycotted retailers including Wal-Mart last holiday season for excluding the word "Christmas" from products sold in stores.

"We, quite frankly, have learned a lesson from last year," Wal-Mart spokeswoman Linda Blakley told USA Today in a separate report. "We're not afraid to use the term 'Merry Christmas.' We'll use it early, and we'll use it often."

Wal Mart is losing market share to target- Wal Marts comp store sales are DOWN to last year

they feel that they can not afford to alienate THEIR core customer- they don't really care about New Yorkers who alread don't shop there

my last company used to do alot of business with them and I know their stragies for this year- and they are scared of losing more to target!

Because Wal-Mart is THE national chain. It is hard to understand living in NY b/c it is not like that here. But any store would love to be Wal-mart and make the $$ they do. They set the tone and can basically do what they want b/c they have people lining up at the door to have their products sold at Wal-mart.

Again...I don't agree with them...that is just they way it is. They are like the big bully of the retail world!

I think someone at Walmart is seriously confused if they believe the loss of sales is due to not saying "merry christmas" rather than the very apparent reason - horrible employment practices. These people need to get a clue.
