Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas

I think a lot of people are getting of the subject here. The main issue is that a NATIONAL chain is having a policy that does not embrace all the people of the NATION. It doesn't matter where most of their stores are located -there are people of all different faiths who live in this country - and a name as big as Wal-Mart should respect that.
Amen!!

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
Here's my two cents....
I am a Christain but well aware that there are many other holidays celebrated around this time...
However personally, I am not offended should some say Happy Kwanza, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Happy Holidays etc. All it is, is a joyful greeting. Smile and move on.
Someone wishing you well in one religion's greeting which you don't practice doesn't make you any less a part of the religion you DO practice. It usually last less than ten seconds, most likely from a perfect stranger that you normally wouldn't announce your religion to on a normal day, so what's the difference?
I believe we've all become a little too sensitive. We should practice live and let live.

I have to speak from the other side for just a moment (but adding the caveat that it doesn't really bother me THAT much when someone wishes me a merry christmas, just a slight "irk" ). With that said, I think it's difficult to understand when you are of the "majority", so to speak. Yes, I absolutely LOVE the christmas season, the lights, the music (the charlie brown xmas cd is my favorite!), everything that goes along with it. But, during the month of December, when I'm shopping or walking around, and virtually every single day, at least ten people or more wish me a "merry christmas", well, after a while, it does start to bother me a little, and makes me think for just a moment, do they even realize that there are many people amongst them that don't celebrate christmas? In my perspective, it's a bit presumptious to wish EVERYONE a merry christmas. I'm not saying it's the end of the world, or an absolute necessity, but as someone who celebrates a different holiday, it would be nice to know that others understand and recognize that people all around the world are celebrating a diversity of holidays. Hope that makes sense...

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
In the UK they don't quite get the fact that jews don't have christmas trees! All through the Christmas season, which here starts in August, people ask me what I am doing for Christmas, I simply reply "I don't celebrate Christmas" which usually elicits a BLANK STARE. I think its makes people feel uncomfortable on both sides when people say "Happy Christmas" I try to avoid saying it...full stop. I mean, they even say "Happy Christmas" To Muslims who are wearing traditional garb... *sigh*

Can I also mention that im REALLY sick of the "christmas tree came form the pagens" Honestly I don't care where it came from ITS A CHRISTMAS TREE. It has been a CHRISTMAS TREE my entire life and will be a CHRISTMAS TREE for the rest of my life. JUST LIKE CHRISTMAS LIGHT AND CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS AND CHRISTMAS GARLAND AND CHRISTMAS STOCKINGS AND SANT CLAUSE TOO.

there are really bigger social issues in the world then if some worker at walmart says merry christmas or happy holidays
how about the fact that the people working there don't have heath insurance or make a living wage - now that's a real issue!
EXACTLY. and the fact that Walmart is trying to cut their full time work force down to less than 40% of their total employees so that they wont have to provide benefits.
You couldnt pay me to shop at that store.

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
I don't give a sh*t either way.
I don't see why anyone would offended. If people say Happy Hanukkah to me I don't get offended. I'm not offended by the more inclusive "Happy Holidays" either.
I can't believe there is so much debate in our culture about this. I mean people are trying to be NICE whether they says Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas.
People need to ***** get over it. It's not a sign of oppression either way
What I think is really stupid is saying "we're not afriad to say "merry Christmas"...as if they're so oppressed. It makes more sense for a national chain to say Happy Holidays, but the fact that they have to have a "policy" about this is insane.
If the store is selling christmas rtreees and christmas decorations, it's the christma shop., if it also sell haunkkah decorations, it's a holiday shop..Why does this have to make national news?

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
You all missed one very important part and it was the first line in the article.
>>>NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Wal-Mart has told its employees that it's OK to once again greet shoppers by saying "Merry Christmas" this holiday season instead of the generic "Happy Holidays."<<<
See the key words in that sentance... That it's OK to once again greet shoppers....
The issue that had so many Christians upset is that Wal-Mart FORBID it's employees to use the words Merry Christmas. Last year they HAD to say Happy Holidays. Didn't matter if the customer was wearing a pin that said "Jesus is the Reason for the Season" and purchasing a Nativity - they couldn't exercise free speech and say Merry Christmas - if they did it was grounds for disciplinary action. As part of that, they banished the words from their advertising in print, TV and store signage, and that was offensive to people that did celebrate. They've decided that it's OK to acknowledge the holiday that a large number of their customers celebrate instead of denying it's existance.

I think we got that part We are debating if we get offended by people saying merry christmas or happy holidays?
