Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
I think someone at Walmart is seriously confused if they believe the loss of sales is due to not saying "merry christmas" rather than the very apparent reason - horrible employment practices. These people need to get a clue.
I couldn't agree with you more! but they very people they hurt- and they people who shop their and they don't even see if

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
Christmas tree was started in Scandanavia and is a fairly "new" custom associated with Christmas. it was taken from a pagan ritual about the winter solstice.
Christmas tree has become the popularized symbol of the Season (along with Santa, who's story was taken after a saint in Turkey, who lived before Christ)
the symbol of the birth of Christ, is the nativity scene.
it is a sad sad world that we can turn something so joyous into a political debate.

I think we should all celebrate Festivus. No menorah, no tree, no nativity scene.
Just a pole. An airing of grievances. And feats of strength.
Festivus... for the rest of us.

I have a serious question though, why can you buy a gun at WalMart but not an explicit CD?
Doesn't that sound a little like a right-wing christian argument?

It IS the Christmas season, always was so why the stink now?
NO, it is not. It is the HOLIDAY season where people of all faiths celebrate different things - christmas, hanukah, kwanza, etc... that's why Happy Holidays is the more respectful term to use.
Exactly!!! Our country is divided enough as it is, politically, why add to it when there is a solution already in place that embraces everyone?
I agree Greenie - FESTIVUS for the REST OF US!

I noticed a Target commercial last night - at the end there was a "Merry Christmas" above their trademark. It's not just WalMart.

b/c the right to own a gun is in the US Constitution. vulgarity & profanity isn't the same thing as free speech. hence the "BLEEPS" if those words are said on regular TV.

To you it is Holiday, to me it is Christmas season, however, why the stink now and not before is what I mean? All these years and it was ok.

We need to look no further as to why murder rates has been on the rise since WalMart opened.

my point is, it's a more conservative view point that reflects their core customers.

Totally off topic but: Freedom of speech protects the speech that people 'hate' too.
Why must this debate happen every year? (Christmas/Holiday trees, 'Merry Christmas'/'Happy Holidays', etc),

interesting before I met DH, I was totally extreme left. he has truly opened my eyes about some conservative issues. And I would like to think that I opened his eyes as well regarding some leftist issues.
the best argument I have heard yet for owning a gun is (aside from it being every Americans right)... the first thing Hitler did when he came into power was take away everyone's gun.

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
I have learned two things from this post:
People are still clueless that Christianity is not the only religon of the world.
AND
A sociological experiment should be done to see if WalMart has helped with the increasing murder rate in society.

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
OK- I haven't read the whole thing, but here is my 2 cents.
I'm Jewish and I don't celebrate Christmas. I happen to love many of the traditions of Chirstmas, Christmas music, Christmas tree (I have no clue what a Holiday tree is), the Red and Green decorations and Christmas lights. Every year I try to take the drive through the houses in Brooklyn to see the spectacular lights.
That being said, I think its nicer and more respectful for someone to say "Happy Holidays" taking notice of the fact that there are many people in the US who don't celebrate Christmas (Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, etc...).
But if someone says Merry Christmas I am not offended. I just say Merry Christmas back. Or after this thread, maybe I will say Happy Hanukah I just don't think its a big deal.

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
I think this overly commercialized season has more to do with Christmas than any other celebration. The merchandise relating to Christmas far outweighs what's sold for Hanukkah, for example. Walmart and other stores are out to move merchandise -- mostly Christmas related. So saying Merry Christmas makes more sense as opposed to having to be PC and incorporating all holidays.
I think people should have better things to worry about than what and how they are greeted in a store.

Look it up...I wouldn't be surprised if it has been done!!
But they do not sell guns in every store.
But I do find it strange that you can buy groceries, a gun, a tractor, an engagement ring, clothing and gas (yes some have gas stations) all in one place

There are people of all faiths and cultures in all areas - mostly in the cities - less than NY - of course - but that doesn't mean that's it's ok for a national chain store to deliberately ignore other faiths.
wal marts are not located in urban areas
I think their customers actually complained about the "happy holiday's" last year and that's why they are going back to merry christmas
Depends what you define as urban - not all Walmarts are in rural, unpopulated areas.

So Jewish people should not celebrate Channukah and Atheist should be forced to celebrate Christmas?
wow...might as well go back to the Non-Caucasians on the back of the bus, right?
Seriously-it's only the "Christmas Season" if you celebrate Christmas!!!

Re: What do you all think about this? Wal-Mart: We're not afraid to say Merry Christmas
OK - I put in a search of my mom's zip code in Florida - and came up with 20 walmarts within a 20 mile radius.
1. Delray Beach, FL 33484 2. Boca Raton, FL 33428 3. Boynton Beach, FL 33436 4. Coral Springs, FL 33067 5. Coral Springs, FL 33076 6. Pompano Beach, FL 33064 7. Lake Worth, FL 33463 8. Margate, FL 33063 9. Pompano Beach, FL 33069 10. North Lauderdale, FL 33068 11. West Palm Beach, FL 33415 12. Lauderdale Lakes, FL 33313 13. Sunrise, FL 33351 14. West Palm Beach, FL 33411 15. West Palm Beach, FL 33406 16. Sunrise, FL 33323 17. Cooper City, FL 33330 18. Lake Park, FL 33403 19. Miramar, FL 33025 20. Hallandale, FL 33009
All are urban/suburban areas and I can promise you that if they chose to just say "Merry Christmas" in these stores, they will lose some customers.
Before anyone tells me that Florida isn't really the south, blah blah blah - I could probably prove this anywhere.
