what do you do if your newborn doesn't poop in over 24 hours?
he hasn't pooped in forever and to add to that he's a SUPER gasy baby. should i do anything and what?

Is DC BF or formula fed?
That is very typical for BF.
I would wait and call the dr in the am. That new newborn is kinda young to do anything. Does he seem uncomfortable?

he's bf but gets maybe 2 oz. rtf similac a day if i feel like my supply is super low.
he's always uncomfortable with the gas issue so i think this just makes it worse. in the hospital they stimulated him after 24 hours of no pooping.

DD is 5 1/2 weeks and she has not gone #2 for 2 days- shes 50/50 formula/bf
We have tried warm baths, bicycle legs, abdomend massage, watered down formula and anal stimulation with a thermometer.
We are anxiously awaiting a large "deposit" sometime soon- if not, we are calling the dr.

When DD was weaning off of BM, I was supplementing with formula and I found that she went several days without "pooping." I contacted the ped. who suggested I stimulate the rectum by taking her temp. with a thermometer. This worked and she was able to go. The ped. told me that I should only be concerned if the consistency of the "poop" is hard which is indicative of constipation. He also suggested that I only stimulate after the third day of not "pooping" and contact him if stimulation is not successful. Ever since then DD has been getting much more regular with her bowel movements.
I think when transitioning from BM to formula it takes some time for their digestive systems to adapt which accounts for the change in frequency.

I think it is "OK" for NBs not to go everyday. My guy almost went 4 days once. the rectal stimulation worked for me, but call your ped for better guidance.

when my dd was equally formula and BF she would sometimes go between 2-4 days without having a bowel movement..my dr said he wasnt even ALITTLE worried AT ALL. he said not to be concerned until it gets closer to the 5-7 day mark..she almost ALWAYS went on day 3..
now shes mostly BF, but i do notice that if my supply is very low, and i give more formula than usual, she will go every 3 days.

I agree ~ my little guy did not go everyday and I called my ped panicked because he did not go for a few days my ped says it is ok ~ you can try rectal stimulation and i would call your ped just to be sure...

This is what my Dr told us too. I use my judgement though-first I try rocking them-I hold them sideways across my stomach with their heads nestled in my arm. I try to make my stomach hard(as hard as it gets after carrying twins anyway ) I jiggle them and sway from side to side. I also pump their legs. If that doesn't work I would load up the thermometer with vaseline and use that. Good luck! It sux I have two gassy kids so I feel your pain

if DC looks like they're straining to poop for over an hour or so, call the ped and ask if you can give a bit of pear or prune juice.....

Now you are all making me nervous about DD's opposite problem -- she goes #2 at least 4 or more times every day! Is this normal, or does that sound like diarrhea?

My DD had major pooping issues when she was a newborn. We would do bicycle legs, massage her belly, and when needed do anal stimulation with a thermometer. Our ped also recommended putting a very slight amount of prune juice in her bottles.

According to my ped, you shouldn't be concerned unless she is going more than 7 times a day.
