What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
We always get invited to do things at night, like go over peoples houses for dinner. The thing is, Erin goes to sleep between 6-6:30, and Ry goes in anywhere from 7-8.
I don't think it's fair to disrupt their bedtime. Plus, I feel like I will mess up a good thing with them sleeping 12 hours a night by keeping them out past their bedtime. And they WON'T fall asleep anywhere but home for bed, so if they are not home, they won't go to bed.
What do you guys do? Do you just pass on the invites?
I feel like people don't understand how important bedtime is, and think that I should just bring them, and when I don't, think that I never go out or do anything with them, which I do, but not at bedtime.

Do you ever get a babysitter? I would when it is worth shelling out the $$.
With Ale, I won't take her out after her bedtime but if we are out, I can stay out with her. She'll fall asleep in her stroller.

Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
great post...I struggle with this too. I usually decline invites for the evening or Dh and I split up. One of us will stay home to put DD to bed. I really don't like messing with her bedtime, but I feel like we miss out on a lot by doing so.

Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
we don't do much at night besides the occassional dinner for the 2 of us but I put the kids to bed and then my mom stays here with them.
I would not bring them b/c it wouldn't be an enjoyable evening out for me.

when they are a few months old that is one thing, when they get older and more aware it's another... but hopefully your will continue to be good like that, some are, some aren't...

That's us too. Ry is so excited to be in another place, and will NEVER fall asleep. Then on the drive home he will, and then wake up when we get home, and then is UP. Plus, he is cranky because he is tired, and Erin is the same... both cranky pants because they are tired. Sometimes its not worth it.

Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
I was very lucky and Hayley would (and will) sleep anywhere.
But honestly, either get a babysitter or try it one night, take them with you. I would go crazy sitting at home every night if I didn't take Hayley anywhere with us...I just pray DD#2 will be like her big sister and sleep anywhere .
ETA: I started this when Hayley was an infant so she got used to it. If you never did that when they were small, you can't expect them to do it when they are toddlers.

My kids are older now but I always brought my kids out, not to restaurants though, but to friends and relatives houses. I too felt like I didn't want to miss out. 2 of my kids didnt fall asleep easily while we were out, but we dealt.

We do the exact same thing. I think it is important to have some flexibility and be able to still do things.

Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
Depends on the occasion...
Sometimes I bring Thomas, sometimes I pass, and sometimes I have Grandma and Granpa watch him.
If it's something at 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. and Thomas goes to bed at 7 p.m., I take him, get him ready for bed there, he falls asleep in car and I put him in crib when we get home (he goes back to sleep easily - knock on wood)! If it's something at 9 p.m. or so, I'd either pass or get a sitter.

Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
there were a few times where we've brought our little one out and come home a lot later than expected but that was a long while ago. DS is now 16mos old. i don't know how your oldest would handle it. but give it a try. just go home when he starts acting up. other than that, we're home come bedtime. it is important for a baby to get their sleep. it's beneficial for everyone as you know but once in a while is okay i think.

Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
I have my DS on a good schedule and decided not to break it. My DH and I still do things but nothing that will interfere with AJ's sleep schedule. You need to do what you are comfortable with and what works best for you and your DC.
The other option is to have your friends over your house so you still get to do things and your children are home in their bed.

I do the same.. when she was little I brought her everywhere. If she fell asleep then I let her sleep and if she didnt then we left a little earlier then we normally would have.
Now that she's bigger I make sure there's a place for her to lay down when its bedtime. I agree, our life doesnt stop because of her bedtime.
When she starts nursery school in September than Ill make sure during the week things are cut out but thats about it

i agree...DS used to pass out in the infant seat but now that he likes to move around before he sleeps I dont know how I would put him to sleep in anything other than a crib

Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
We've tried bringing DS out a little late, but it's not pretty. He almost always wakes up when we get home, and it's brutal getting him back to sleep. Lots of screaming.
So we're rethinking this now. We will probably need to take turns--DS will go out with his friends alone sometimes and me with mine. We don't get so many invites though, most of our friends have kids, so they plan get-togethers in the afternoon now.

We used to do this and it worked great. Once DS hit about 11-12 months it was over! He realizes there is so much going on he won't sleep.
It depends on the situation - but I tend to go to a lot of things and just leave by 9 or so. (at home he goes to bef 7-7:30) Before we leave DS drinks his milk and gets his pj's on and he falls asleep in the car. He transfers good to his crib without waking up. If it somethibg much later, like past 10 or so I leave him with grandma or just pass on it.

Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
Lily is such a great sleeper and gets very upset when her bedtime is messed with, so we tend to turn down evening invitations. We had to leave my brother's wedding an hour early because of it (we stayed out 2 hours later than we normally would) - but it really isn't fair to her to disrupt her whole world. If we have a family gathering, we'll go, spend time with people, and then leave when we need to. It usually means missing dessert...but that helps my diet, so I don't mind!

This is us too. DD is pretty good about falling asleep when she is really tired (I hope that doesn't change). But she also has a late bedtime since she gets up a little later in the am. If it is something that will really mess her up, we have someone stay with her. This weekend, she will fall asleep by Grandma's and then we pick her up to come home. We'll see how that works.
