Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
we bring DD with us...we went to a friends last night...at 7 she had her cereal then bottle then she went to sleep in one of the girls beds that lives there...we have had DD out and about since she was very young and has gotten used to falling asleep anywhere...we will see if it keeps up!

I agree but am a little different. and I do take DD to restaurants, parties etc. Since day she was 2 months old. At times she wont fall asleep but I dont stay out too late. She falls asleep on way home and into bed she goes.
Same here. It is easier the younger they are. Now at 20 mths DS will just stay up a little later and fall asleep on the way home. If I know I have to stay out late DS stays home with a sitter.

Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
DS is 20 mos. and sleeps a little late in comparison. from about 9:30 pm- 7:30 am now. we bring him with us for dinner parties, and leave around 9 pm. we change him into PJ's, let him have his milk and prepare him for bed before we leave. he usually falls asleep in the car and then we just transfer him right into bed. he is usually knocked out from playing (our friends and family have small ones as well) and havnig fun, so it works well for us!

Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
I bring my DS everywhere as long as its not an adult only type thing, if kids are invited I take him, hes very easy going because of this..
ETA I do leave him home on night when i need a break, I was just sayong out schedule doesnt revolve around his bed time

I guess bc I got her use to it early she does... I was not stopping my life or missing out on family things bc she has a bedtime..
I guess I am blessed she adapts
when they are a few months old that is one thing, when they get older and more aware it's another... but hopefully your will continue to be good like that, some are, some aren't...
So true! When Ale was a few months old and in the car seat she went everywhere.
Now that she is crawling and a bit older, it is definitely not the same. And I would feel guilty disrupting her routine.

We've always taken DD with us and have been flexible with her bedtime. It works for us. You have to do what works for you.

Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
Emily has never been the baby that can fall esleep anywhere. She needs her crib, her room, her music box, her blankets.
Depending on the function, I will take her out with us. I won't take her out at her bedtime, but if it is something that starts earlier, like a birthday party or barbeque, I will keep her out past her bedtime, within reason.
She rarely even sleeps in the car, so sometimes I feel bad making her loose out on sleep, but usually within a few days she catches up an extra 15 minutes here and there during nap times.

Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
Have you tried bringing a pack n play? We bring our kids out alot - and my younger one will fall asleep in the pack n play and my older one either stays awake later or will lay down wherever we are.
If you plan on taking the children on vacation its a great way to get them used to sleeping somewhere different.
Ironically my younger one was the difficult baby and a terrible sleeper but now he can sleep anywhere!

Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
It depends on what the invite is - we rarely plan things during the week because I need the kids ready & out of the house to catch a train.
When they were younger, my kids were very adaptable. We could take them out & they'd conk out or go for a short period of time.
I do agree that a babysitter is key if your kids are not adaptable. However, that can rack up $$$.

Not all babies adapt and fall asleep anywhere... My children don't and never did.
Same- my SIL's DD could and she always drove me nuts telling me it was my fault she wasn't flexible about sleeping

Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
As a baby I kept to a pretty tight routine- unless it was an important or special function.
Now that RJ is older- I break his schedule on the weekends all the time.. He does fine with it!
I really cant break it during the week though- since that leads to trouble...

Re: What do you do re: bringing the kids out at night
DD is very adaptable - I have been taking her everywhere since day 1 (unless, of course it is a no children allowed kind of place).
I would be very depressed if I had to stay home all the time plus I do not believe that my life needs to end because I have a child.
I think DD turned out sooo flexible because of this - I always just schlepped her along...
