What do you do when your NB wont stop crying?!

Today is a no good very bad day

DD is 6 weeks

She didnt go to sleep last night until 130am

She woke at 5am for a bottle, didnt really go back to sleep after

She hasnt napped at all today and if she doesnt have a bottle in her mouth she's screaming! Im soo tired and frustrated.

It's rare that she has a day like this, but when she does it's unbareable! What do I do? Do I just let her scream? Do I keep feeding her? She doesnt seem to be overly gassy, so Im assuming she's overtired but she wont nap! Shell calm down enough after a bottle and seem to be dozing off so i'll put her down and shell start all over again Chat Icon Chat Icon

I called DH at work so he could calm me down and he told me "welcome to motherhood" in a cold voice. I wanted to hang up on him. Chat Icon Its days like today that make me wanna go back to work ASAP Chat Icon

Re: What do you do when your NB wont stop crying?!

if feeding her helps, give her another bottle. it sounds like a growth spurt! DS was totally inconsolable if he was hungry at that age.

remember you CAN'T overfeed her - if it's too much, she'll just spit up. Chat Icon

ETA: the swing is also a good suggestion, also, you can try putting her in the infant carrier on top of the washing machine on the spin cycle Chat Icon

If you aren't too sleep deprived and it isn't raining too hard, take her for a drive in the car.

Playing music sometimes helped with my DS.

Maybe you need to increase the amount in her bottles. Add 1/2 oz to each bottle and see if she takes it and it helps her sleep better.

Re: What do you do when your NB wont stop crying?!

all really great suggestions

I dont drive (i know i know, im working on getting a licsense) bc I live in the city, so rainy days are the pits -- were stuck inside and cabin fever is a horrible thing

she takes a paci but when shes upset she just shoots it across the room or it falls out as soon as i turn my back

as far as adding to the bottle -- we have HUGE issues with the amount she eats. shes just starting to take 3oz at a time, and sometimes wont finish that. shes got reflux and doesnt like to eat much at a sitting

Not to be tmi but has she pooped. My dd gets like this when she has to go. I usually put her face down over my legs and pt her back to get all the gas out and then just nurse her as much as she wants. Then the damn breaks and I get my happy girl back. It will pass Chat Icon Chat Icon Sorry your dh was a jerk Chat Icon I say give him the night shift and say welcome to fatherhood when he says he's tired tomorrow.

eta: just saw your response that she doesn't eat well. You can try a warm bath. That may help soothe her. Just steam out the bathroom beforehand so she won't be cold.

I thought that but she pooped twice yesterday and once today. Luckily she hasnt had problems with constipation yet (knock on wood).

I wish he would take the night shift one night -- but he just snores away while I sit up at night with her begging her to sleep

Not that I have much to complain about with him -- hes a great DH, great father. Hes very involved with her and takes great care of us. We agreed that because he works in the medical field its not fair to his patients for him to be sleep deprived. But some nights I wish I could have a break. I dont remember what 5 straight hours of sleep is like and im a girl who LOOOOVES to sleep

When my son is like that I put him on his back and rub his belly. That usually does the trick for him, and his pacifier.

We have all been there, and as for DH's at night. Mine is not any better...lol

DD was like this on Monday. She wouldn't stop unless she was eating, so I kept feeding her. She ate 40 oz.! I really don't think you can overfeed them this young. If they don't want to eat, they won't. If your dd seems hungry, I would just keep giving her the bottle.

If that's not it, the other thing that works for us is the 5 S's (from The Happiest Baby on the Block by Harvey Karp). We would swaddle, give her the pacifier, rock her and ssshhh her. Or I'd run the DustBuster, which works better. :) Good luck, I know how frustrating it is!!

If she has reflux-has she been tested for milk allergy?(you just need to bring a poopy diaper to the Dr. ) Is she on reflux meds? What does she eat for formula? Or is she BF?

She hasnt been tested for milk allergies -- are there specific symptoms to look for??

She's on Zantac (1ml twice daily) and gets rice cereal in her bottles to help keep it down. She's on Good Start Gentle Plus now, and was previously breastfed (via pumping).

I hate those bad days!Chat Icon

Someone once suggested putting the baby near the drying machine to feel the vibrations - I haven't tried this one but it's tempting.

Today my baby is very fussy and crying and I am feeding much more than usual, changing diapers, and putting her in the bouncy chair. Only the feeding seems to be working!

I used to use the swing, or put the in the bouncy seats with the hair dryer running.
Also when DS was particularly bad, I'd put him in the sling - that put him to sleep always.

Re: What do you do when your NB wont stop crying?!

My DD is 10 weeks old and sounds very similiar to your DD. She has acid reflux and takes Axid 2x a day and we put cereal in her bottles to help lessen the amount of spitting up.
She takes one big nap a day from 9 to 12:30 in her swing and then is up the rest of the day and is usually very cranky.
Things that have worked for us are:
- carrying her around in the baby bjorn
- putting her in the bathroom with the shower running.
- leaving the vaccuum on
- rocking her in the bouncy seat (this will usually put her to sleep for a few minutes)
-giving her a bath
Good Luck and keep trying everything until you find something that she really likes.

Do you have a sling? When my DD was that age and cried constantly, the sling was a God send.

I have a reflux baby... I remember those days.....

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

If she is screaming that much its probably her reflux acting up. Remember just because she doesn't spit up doesn't mean she isn't refluxing, it could be coming up and burning her throat. You can call teh ped, a lot of times you can give a little bit of mylanta to help soothe her esophagus and neutralize the acid more

before my son was diagnosed with AR and a milk protein allergy, these were his symptoms

- inconsolable crying / screaming for hours on end (one night it was 4 hours straight)

- arching his back when I tried to burp him

- screaming while the bottle was in his mouth

- eating only a few ozs at a time

sounds like she may have an allergy in addition to the AR

I would bring a poopy diaper with you to the ped and ask them to test it

I wouldd have her checked. You just take the diaper and they look for traces of blood in her poop-if its there there is a milk allergy. One of my sons is on Good Start, the other is on amino acid formula for dairy allergy. I think when a baby cries constantly there is probably something going on, other than being overtired. For my kids anywayChat Icon
