What do you think about Dopplers?

I'm a worry wart and I have NO symptoms - so I'm always wondering whether or not I'm still preggo. I was getting sono's every week due to spotting, but since I've stopped spotting and just cleared my first tri ultrascreen I won't get another until my Level II. (glad I don't NEED them, but I WANT them)

I asked my doctor about the Doppler. He just said sometimes it causes more worry than helps since I won't always be able to interpret what I'm hearing. He didn't say anything about it not being safe, just that I'm not a trained professional.

What do you think? How do you go 2 months without knowing everything is ok? I'm so confused as to why they don't at least check for a heartbeat every 4 weeks.

TIA!

Re: What do you think about Dopplers?

I was torn...and I did not get one. I am the exact way as you...no real symptoms and always feel like I should worry about something. Honestly...I can feel the HB myself, if I find the right spot on my belly (usually when I'm lying in bed watching TV, I will look for it).

However...so far at my doctor's appointments (every 4 weeks) he does a mini sono so I can see baby and hear the HB.

That's so great! I asked my doctor if he would be doing that and he said no, not unless something is wrong.

Maybe I can beg, bribe, etc. Chat Icon

Re: What do you think about Dopplers?

I never rented a doppler. My dr checked the heartbeat at each visit (not always with a sono, just a doppler).

Once you start feeling the baby moving, I don't think need the doppler.

Is it strange that my doctor doesn't check for the heartbeat every visit with either a sono or doppler?

if i had a doppler i would drive myself crazy if ever i was unable to find the heartbeat, so i decided against it for sanity sake...

Re: What do you think about Dopplers?

I have a doppler. I rented one also because of bleeding. I love it and highly recommend it!

My doctors office checks the heartbeat with their doppler at every appointment which is every 4 weeks. My doppler at home works and sounds better than the one at their office.

My Dr also always checked for the HB at every visit.

Doppler was not for me. I think it would just make me worry more if I didn't find the heartbeat one day, meanwhile the baby might just be in a bad position or because I'm not a trained pro, I'd be doing it wrong.

Re: What do you think about Dopplers?

I love my doppler and it is the reason I'm finally enjoying my pregnancy. With the digital doppler, there is no mistaking the heartbeat. If I didn't have a digital I might be confused but with mine, I know exactly what is what and its so comforting. I went to the doctor last night and didn't get a sono and she used the doppler and told me that she heard a kick, so now I know how to recognize that too. It's been my savior.

Re: What do you think about Dopplers?

I got the one that displays the heart rate. So, if you don't know if you hear the heartbeat, you know for sure by the display. Also, in the beginning it is a little more difficult to hear. It has definately gotten stronger in the one week that we had the doppler.

I say get it. I am happy with mine so far.

Re: What do you think about Dopplers?

I think it is a very personal decision. For me, I wanted one, then decided against it because I was afraid of causing more stress than I would be relieving. Are you SURE your dr. doesn't check at least the heartbeat at every appointment? Honestly, I don't think I would feel comfortable going to a dr. that didn't check the baby's hb at LEAST every 4 weeks.

I called and asked the nurse today, but maybe she thought I meant via u/s. I go next Monday for my first official 4 week visit since being released from weekly visits where I always had a sono. I guess I'll just wait and see. If he doesn't I'll request it.

I'd rather not make myself crazy with a doppler but I need to hear the heartbeat at least once a month!

Re: What do you think about Dopplers?

I'm pretty sure they need to hear the heartbeat every four weeks. And having them check it with the doppler is so ridiculously easy that if you request it everytime you go, it'd be ridiculous for them to refuse you. ANd if they do, send 'em MY way and I'll give em a piece of my mind!Chat Icon Chat Icon

LOVE LOVE LOVE my doppler. It was the best thing I did - especially before she was moving regularly. I limited my use to once every other night. I loved hearing her heartbeat!!

Re: What do you think about Dopplers?

I don't want to stress myself out and I also read that babies don't really LIKE the doppler- they try to move away from it. There are also a couple of articles I found online that suggest that constant exposure isn't even tested medically- don't know if it has any long term developmental affects, etc.
I just figure- why bother the baby- it has a lifetime to be assaulted by sounds, sites, noise, etc- might as well let it be as comfy as possible.

Re: What do you think about Dopplers?

I started to bleed at 12 weeks in the middle of the night. If I didnt have my doppler to search for Jeremys heartbeat I would have been driving myself to the hospital at 2AM. His heartbeat was strong and my OB said since I found his HB and it sounded good to just rest and come in for a checkup the next day. TOTAL peace of mind!

I agree, plus I know if I couldn't find the heartbeat I would stress and being a diabetic my pregnancy is already stressed enough. But I do feel it is a personal decision and for those that did I can see why they wouldChat Icon

I agree also. I personally cannot use one..it would cause too much stress. If I felt worried, I would just call the doctor and ask for an appointment to ease my mind. But like it was said in the previous post, its a personal decision Chat Icon
