Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
We have gotten along without it for 2 1/2 years so far and without jinxing it, I think DS may not need it. We take about 5 pretty long car rides per year and have had success, so as long as that continues, we won't use it.

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
We have one that we got right before we took a 9 hour road trip to VA when DD was 11 months. It came in REALLY handy on the trip and I was so glad that we got it. We only use it for trips that are over 3 hours, other than that DD keeps herself entertained.
She is very into imaginitive play, so we get her stuff like colorforms and magnetic sets.
DD#2 has never seen the portable player (she is 16 months), that is how infrequently we use it.
We got one that can be used in and out of the car and it has come in handy in other situations as well (it can also be hooked up to a TV and used as a DVD player) so we use it in the hotel when we get there.
When we get a new car, I don't want a built in - I think it would be a daily battle
On a side note, I saw a mom at the GAP pushing a stroller with DC watching a handheld player - I don't think I would go to that extreme so I could shop

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
I have not read previous posts...
We did not get one installed (I wouldn't allow it) because I didn't want it to be on even for short trips. I am not totally against it though and we do have a portable that can attache to the back of the headrest for long trips. We haven't had to use it yet though

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
I voted that I don't think we'll ever use one. We don't have one and have no plan to get one. I personally have debated borrowing one from a friend for our 9+ hour road trips to family, but DH is against it and it worked out fine....yes, she's had a few meltdowns through the years that a DVD player probably would have helped with, but we dealt with them
I don't care if others do it obviously, but it's not for us at this point.

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
we have a portable one that can be attatched to the back of a seat....but i see nothing wrong with it. if it works for you - good for you. if you're against it, then that's fine too. this is another one of those things - what works for you is all that matters.
we are a road trip family....(heck, we drive more than an hour every weekend in the summer to get to the drive-in)....so we knew we'd eventually have kids - which is why the portable one we got had the option of going over a seat.

Even with the DVD player we've had meltdowns so you are missing out on that!

We have a DVD player in our car but our kids are still rear facing so I have never turned it on. Once we turn them we may use it for long trips, but then again that might create a monster...who knows. Maybe I'll just play Your Baby Can Read over and over

I have one.
Logan knows the rule is only long drives.
I define long drives as an hour plus.

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
We only have a portable one that we take on long (I'm talking 7hour-ish trips) but I hate the idea of having it on all the time because he watched enough at home and should be able to entertain himself in other ways. It's actually rare that we need to pull it out on the 7hr trips though.

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
When we bought our new truck, it was one of the packages that came with it. We figured it would be good to have since we do a couple trips a year to see my family in Maine & also have a weekend place in the Poconos. I do not forsee my children watching it everytime we are in the car though!

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
I think I started using the DVD player in the car when DD was about 18 months old. Before that she would sleep on long car rides.
Now I just use it for long rides (1 hour or longer). She's good otherwise.

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
We have managed 4+ years without one. I don't plan on buying one anytime soon - even for our 6+ hour plane ride. She has never had one or seen one - so she doesn't know what she is missing and I really don't care for them too much.

Abby doesnt need one now. I never needed one (they didn't exist). Kids should be able to survive without them. They want one? Too bad. So sad. They aint gonna get one.

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
DD is 2.5 and we don't have one. My Mom was insisting on buying her one for Christmas and DH said absolutely not. We talk to her or sing or she naps. She's pretty good in the car though so I can't really say what I would do if she screamed all the time...then maybe but for now no DVD player in the car for us.

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
I've used it in the past for long car drives (4+ hours) and you bet your arse I've used it for the 12+ hour flight to Israel! And, because Alex watches just about 15 minutes of TV total in a week, a movie here or there on a long trip isn't all that harmful, in my opinion.
I try not to make a habit out of it, but I am also a firm believer in everything in moderation.

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
I agree about really long car rides, DS is 18 months and we've never had to resort to that. I'm sure when he is older he will ask for it but I wouldn't want to make a habit out of it either.

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
We recently put in a dual screen DVD player in my car for a trip we're going on in a few weeks. My oldest DS is almost 3 and he'll watch Disney movies on it while we're driving home from work/daycare, since it can take me up to an hour to get home. DS #1 is only 1 and usually falls asleep. When he's the only one in the car with me, I have put Baby Einstein DVD's on for him to watch.

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
We have one. It's great for long trips. We don't use it for day-to-day. And DD is not big on TV if she has other options, so I don't mind that she watches the 1-2 times a month we drive to LI or PA.

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
We have a portable DVD player that DH got from work. We haven't used it in the car yet, and we have taken a few long trips (Maryland twice, jersey, pennsylvania) We bring it and use in in the hotel room at night, but not in the car. I am not against having one in the car for long trips, i just haven't had to use it yet.

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
We just got a minivan with two TVs in it.
So far Jack watched a movie for 20 minutes while we were waiting for my mom who was shopping.
We will be using it though when we drive to Georgia this summer.
We do not use it on a daily basis, but we are more of a singing in the car type of family.

I you.
DH and I disagree on this but luckily, we bought our car back before this kind of thing was even an option (and I would have objected then too because I just don't get the need). My DD watches a LOT of tv as it is, she doesn't need it in the car too.

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
we made a crazy daytrip to Savannah once. DH bought one, it was a piece of junk and not worth the effort.
It came in handy when we were moving and painting...also used it once when i had to bring him to the dentist with me.
We are the ultimate nerd family. On car trips, dh and josh go to library and pick out audio books. I sleep.

Re: What do you think about DVD players in cars for your DC?
I know I am totally in the minority here but we just got a SUV with one in it and we use it all the time. My DS would scream all the home from day care at the end of the day and now he watches ELMO and laughs instead. My DD gets to watch it when she is off running boring errands with Mommy that she usually would refuse to come on or drive me nuts the whole time.
They rarely watch TV at home- 1 hour a week tops- we are always busy doing other things so I see nothing wrong with using it to make my day easier when we are in the car, which isn't that much time. Go ahead, flame my bad mommy self
