Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
I'll start by saying that I dont have a 5 year old- but if I did, I dont think I would buy them a nano- seems like an expensive gift for such a young kid

Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
Ummm, it depends on the kid honestly.
We bought my SIL the shuffle when she was 8 or 9 (ad they were new then)
As for money, kids toys are expensive, so the price of a nano really doesn't phase me...

No. IMO and from what I have seen first hand they cannot handle taking care of it or charging it.

No way. My son is 4 and I still can't imagine him with the earphones in listening to music in a year. I wouldn't think he's that into music at that age. I'm not downloading nick jr songs to an ipod either...

no, there are less expensive kid-type music players you can get for a kid that age.

Honestly, I feel like kids today get such expensive unecessary gifts at too early of an age. This is why most of them don't appreciate ANYTHING. JMO

Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
We had an Ipod for DD. It wasn't hers per se, but it was filled with her music. I would sometimes work out with my Ipod when DD was going to sleep and she would listen to music. So we used an old one and filled it with her music. We called it her Ipod, but she was only 2. It was just filled with her music.

No, too young. I have an almost 6 year old and there's no way I would get that for him. However, he really wants a DS and I still think he's too young for that. But it does depend on the kid. My son has had the Leapster for years now and is usually really good with it.

Nope! That's what ADULTS get (or teenagers). Personally, they shouldn't have ANY ability to drown out other people talking.

My daughter has one. She got it for Christmas last year. She was 6. She loves it but I make sure I keep tabs on it.

No I would look for something else.
What about an ATV that would be a great age appropriate gift.

Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
All depends. I say never say never.
It sounds completely unreasonable...except I just bought a 6 & 8 year old an iPod Touch.
I was COMPLETELY against it. My son had to come up with all of his reasons why he wanted it, readdressed it with DH (as I whispered, "you're still going to say no, right").
Then after ds went to bed, Dh convinced me. He said "you wanted to get him a little digital camera, or maybe something he can videotape with for fun - this things plays songs, takes video and more importantly plays video - so long car rides, plane rides, he has his own portable video screen only we're not lugging DVDs" I bought one for my 6 year old dd because I know it's going to be a big deal if he gets it & she doesn't. Now that I realize she has more gifts than he does (and he counts gifts every year), I'm thinking of holding off until her bday.
I realize this is totally insane...I'm not a big fan of headphones on my kids. They have the rest of their teen years to ignore me with headphones - so I bought a docking station that plays music.
Beats an ATV. No one ever got thrown off a Nano.

No, I'd be too concerned about potential damage to their ears and the child not understanding the value of $$

Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
This is one of my biggest pet peeves!!! I teach kindergarten and I can't stand when the kids talk about their ipods, phones, i touch, Nintendo DS etc... Last year before Christmas this is all they could talk about. So.... I made them sit in a circle and tell me their favorite toy...an actual toy.... some still couldn't get past the video games. I them had them tell me their favorite board game...and half the class couldn't tell me what a board game was....come on....shoots and ladders, candy land, trouble, sorry, guess who??? Kids should be kids....there will be plenty of time for technology later on.

Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
If the kid is interested in music, I might. I would probably go with a non Apple Mp3 player though.
I was about 6, I think, when my uncle bought be a walkman & I loved it. I agree about there being too much technology for young kids, but that his how music comes these days, and music is great for kids.

Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
My 3 year old has one. Granted it's her father's old one that he gave her when he got a new one, but she loves music more than I can even tell you, and she uses it properly and takes such good care of it, so yes, I would buy her a new one when she's 5. But that's MY kid. Maybe another kid wouldn't be ready for it.
