Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
Why not? My dd got one for her forth bday.
I very rarely let her use the headphones, we mostly listen to it in the car or with speakers at home. When she uses headphones its only under my careful watch.
I believe it is teaching her to care for her things. She is very interested in music and treasures that ipod and cares for it better than any other toy she has.
So far she has learned about michael jackson, paul McCartney, the beatles, broadway music, etc...all because we explore itunes and she picks what we should download. She loves listening to the lyrics and singing along.
We also have "dance parties" with the music and we play games like freeze dance.
I often put it on while she is playing so that she doesn't ask for TV. (One can listen to an ipod and play board games at the same time) ;)
I think it is a great gift if the child is able to appreciate it.

No, I'd be too concerned about potential damage to their ears and the child not understanding the value of $$

This is one of my biggest pet peeves!!! I teach kindergarten and I can't stand when the kids talk about their ipods, phones, i touch, Nintendo DS etc... Last year before Christmas this is all they could talk about. So.... I made them sit in a circle and tell me their favorite toy...an actual toy.... some still couldn't get past the video games. I them had them tell me their favorite board game...and half the class couldn't tell me what a board game was....come on....shoots and ladders, candy land, trouble, sorry, guess who??? Kids should be kids....there will be plenty of time for technology later on.
I'm actually a little surprised at your view on technology. Yes, I would agree that video games (depending on the game) isn't always the best way for kids to spend their free time, BUT I think getting kids comfy with certain technologies at a young age is extremely important.
My dd is 4 as I mentioned in my other post, not only does she have an ipod but she is very comfortable with a keyboard and using a computer. I'm also teaching her to use photoshop to draw with since she is very artistic. She also has a vtech system for educational video games that I think helps with some motor skills. AND she is also interested in photography (since I'm a photographer) and I do let her use my DSLR.
In addition we play tons of board games, and have toys that don't require batteries - and she attends a montessori school which doesn't have a battery in the building lol. So she has the best of both worlds.
I just think times are different now and its our job to make kids comfy with technology - its their reality more now then ever!

I agree! I'm actually scared about having kids and then having the fight about when they can get a cell phone. I think 15 or 16 is the right age nowadays, but I didn't have one until I was 22!

No way. Thats an expensive gift for a 5 yr old.
Honestly, I feel like kids today get such expensive unecessary gifts at too early of an age. This is why most of them don't appreciate ANYTHING. JMO

no, there are less expensive kid-type music players you can get for a kid that age.
less expensive and much sturdier for kids tough handling of them.
DS is two and LOVES music. I got him a MP3 "boombox" kind of thing with kid safe headphones for Christmas and would think something along those lines should still be good enough for a 6yo.

My cousin is 5 and is getting one-I think it is ridiculous.
I'M asking santa for one this year....how in the world do you go up in the world of presents if you start at 5 giving a $150 gift?

It's not the price of the gift that concerns me, it's the potential damage to their ears. I don't think I'd feel comfortable letting a 5 year old use those ear buds, but maybe bigger headphones where the volume couldn't go past a certain level... if those even exist

Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
I am with Kelly04 on this one. I do have a 5 year old, and while he is mildly addicted to some computer games DH lets him play, and he is very "technology" savvy (I found him Googling online games ), I want him to be a kid. Not that he can't be a kid listening to a iPod, but I know there is plenty of time for him to grow into that. I guess I am lucky that he isn't yet aware of thing like that and has no interest. Had he asked for something to that effect, I would have looked into a kids mp3 player - which would then get passed on to his sister!

I couldn't agree with you more......For my sons (who are 10 months old now), I want to encourage them to play outside, be active......play with actual toys. I am not saying I will keep them in the dark ages as far as technology is concerned, but I will introduce things like IPODS and video games at an older age.

No way. IMHO, its ridiculous. What is the point of a 5 year old having an iPod??? You can put music on in the car or play it at home.

I guess I mostly agree with this sentiment, although I think MrsR made a lot of intelligent points as well.
As for me...my DDs are 4 and 2.5 and I don't see them getting anything like that for a long time. However, my 4 year old has her own playlist on our ipod (which consists of songs like At the Hop by Danny & the Juniors, Please Don't Stop the Music by Rihanna and Dear Prudence by the Beatles...talk about diverse!)...so I don't think she needs her own. My DH and I expose her to a lot of different music and both my girls look forward to listening to all types of music from Charlie Parker in the car with Daddy to "playing" Beatles Rockband as a family.
Plus, I would absolutely GO THROUGH THE ROOF if either one of them had one and broke/lost it. No one wants that.
ETA: Also, my DD has never used the earbuds; in fact, she's never even touched the ipod!

Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
If i had a kid:
No earphones for little kids at all. I am partially deff thanks to loud music and playing in bands and it completely STINKS! After that and they can comprehend listening to music at a decent loudness then fine - they can have a stereo and listen for all i care.
As far as computers/video games - i think after 5 I am okay with it. But it depends on the kid. My cousins kids had their first mac at 2 but he works for mac and they had one computer built just for him with just children stuff on it and the internet was completely controlled to the point it wasn't worth going on. So in that case i am cool with it.
Phones - NO WAY IN HELL will my child have a cell phone until they can afford to pay for it themselves.

I'll start by saying that I dont have a 5 year old- but if I did, I dont think I would buy them a nano- seems like an expensive gift for such a young kid
I don't have a child as well, but I don't think it has to do with how expensive it is ($200) but more if the product is for age appropriate. I would not by an ipod nano for a 5 year old..would for a 10 yr old. I don't shop for toys, but if there were an age appropriate toy which cost $200 and my child wanted it, then I would buy it (of course if I could afford it at the time). Bottom line, I don't think a 5 year old is mature enough for electronics.

Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
I think its an unnecessary gift for a 5 year old...nevermind that it is an expensive gift. Whatever happened to letting kids just be kids...they're forced to grow up so quickly these days...if they want to listen to music, they should be encouraged to turn on the radio, dance and sing. I'm also dead set against video games, unless they're educational (LeapFrog, etc.) and until they're much older.

They do I got them for DS. I think Fisher Price makes them.
For those whose rationale is let kids be kids and play outside, I actually think music is a wonderful thing for kids to be exposed to at all ages. We play the ipod on the speaker dock (DS knows where it is and goes and asks for it) and we have a big family dance party.
We got him his own kiddie mp3 boombox because I know he'll get a kick out of controlling it (he knows not to touch our ipod himself). And we got him the headphones because well... has anyone else listened to "Empire State of Mind" endlessly on repeat? I used to like the song (especially DS' rendition of it when he belts it out) but sometimes I needs a break

Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
LOL I posted something like this awhile back bc my DD is 5 and wants and Ipod, she loves music. But she said Ipod bc we have them, not bc she needs and Ipod. I thought about getting her a used or refurbished shuffle but it doesnt have a display of any kind, which is what someone said on that thread. I ended up getting her an MP3 player at Toys R Us and speakers. It has a display and it's pink (although her latest favorite color is now "clear" ) I would not buy my 5 yr old a Nano. I will see if she can take care of something like this first. It was only about $25 for the MP3 and $10 for the speaker but I got them even cheaper with the holidays.

Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
My son has had his Ipod for 3 years now - he is 8.
My younger son has an MP3 player since he was 4. It's not an iPod.. but he loves it.
If the kid can take care of it, wants it and knows how to use it.. I think it's a great gift.

Just an FYI - you can set an iPod Classics to a maximum volume. I'm assuming the Nano has a similar option.

Ahahahahahaha. I don't know what's funnier: "5 year old friend" or the fact that you're shamelessly plugging your wares for sale. Again.
Thanks for everyone's opinions... I just wanted to see where other people stand. Personally, I wouldn't get an electronic gift for a 5 yr old.
