No I would look for something else.
What about an ATV that would be a great age appropriate gift.
As would a Hooters gift certificate. Then they could drive the ATV to Hooters and make a day of it.

Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
I have an 11 yr. old and 6 yr. old. My 11 yr. old's ipod is not working as her MP3 player because she does not take care of things the way she should. My 6 yr. old borrows mine and my dh's ipod's and I have no problem with that. He does not have his own, and he hasn't asked for one but I am sure he would take care of it. Not sure what the difference is between an ipod and a walkman when we were kids though. It is just music and I have no problem with my children learning about and listening to music.

*I* wouldn't buy one for a 5 yr old.
I do not have children yet but I would assume if they were dying to use one I would let them see mine for a little while on low volume, but not buy them their own until maybe 5th or 6th grade.

I don't really see a problem with it. I might have said otherwise before I had kids but we have an ITouch and my 4 year old uses it as much as we do. That said she hasn't asked for her own and her Christmas requests were typical 4 year old girl toys.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves!!! I teach kindergarten and I can't stand when the kids talk about their ipods, phones, i touch, Nintendo DS etc... Last year before Christmas this is all they could talk about. So.... I made them sit in a circle and tell me their favorite toy...an actual toy.... some still couldn't get past the video games. I them had them tell me their favorite board game...and half the class couldn't tell me what a board game was....come on....shoots and ladders, candy land, trouble, sorry, guess who??? Kids should be kids....there will be plenty of time for technology later on.
I definitely get what you are saying but technology is way more advanced than when we were kids. We didn't have computers in preschool. Atari was our video game and we would laugh at the graphics on that now. I think this generation of kids are really just keeping up with the times.

Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
Luce is about to inherit his father's U2 Ipod and he is getting a docking station for it.
he has his own playlist, filled with U2, Sting, Garbage, Led Zepplin, Enya, the three Tenors..you know, all that kid stuff
I won't be letting him have headphones any time soon (I don't anticipate allowing that for YEARS, well beyond 5 but talk to me after our first trans atlantic flight ) but as a "radio" I think it's fine.
not sure if I would "gift" if though...like I said, he's getting a beat up old one, and he's too young to know any different than how we teach him to use it.

I think its an unnecessary gift for a 5 year old...nevermind that it is an expensive gift. Whatever happened to letting kids just be kids...they're forced to grow up so quickly these days...if they want to listen to music, they should be encouraged to turn on the radio, dance and sing. I'm also dead set against video games, unless they're educational (LeapFrog, etc.) and until they're much older. I agree and this is exactly how I feel about video games.

Not to mention...these earphones, if the volume isn't controlled correctly, can cause hearing loss. Those ipods are LOUD!

Re: What do you think? IPod Nano for a 5 year old.
Personally I would depending on the child and the parent. I got my 4 year old niece a DSi for Christmas (she asked for an ipod too). She also asked for Barbies and Board Games and Books (her book list was 3 pages long).
The iPod she will get for her birthday in a few months. Currently my sister has the Kids songs downloaded onto her iPod and "they share." My niece knows how to put in in the docking station, find her playslists and play them. She know how to properly take it out and where it gets stored. When I asked her why she needed her own she told me "Because sometimes I like to listen to it at night when I go to sleep and Mom never puts it where it belongs and leaves it in the car and I can't go get from there by myself."
We live in a technical world so they are exposed to all of this stuff from early on. I think my brother was 5 when he got his first Ninetendo.
I think it is the parents job to teach them how to use these items properly and to monitor them while they are being used.
As for the price, they are in the same price range as the American Girl Dolls that she wants too.

This is also how I feel. And I have yet to buy any of my nieces or nephews a video game.
