What do you think schools should do if someone tests positive COVID?

i think the OP posed a great question. I'm an educator too and this part is impossible - in a high school, kids change classes - how do you isolate everyone the kid/staff came in contact with? you can't. you'd be shutting down the school for two weeks - which does nothing if the kid came in contact with siblings or parents who now spread it to their schools and workplaces?

and how many kids come to school sick anyway? in a normal year the amount of hs kids who come to school with fevers and sickness is ridiculous because parents don't keep them home for "every little sniffle" are you sending every kid who coughs once home? what about asymptomatic carriers? will the nurse be able to swab for covid at school?

so do we just let it ride? if you're positive, let the school know and let people make their own choice whether to stay home or not? be asymptomatic and continue to spread it?

i don't envy the people making these decisions for a second. pretty sure an admin degree didn't have a class on public health and how to adjust school to deal with a health pandemic...

So if there is never a vaccine (which there probably will not be), is that it? We just give up on our kids getting a real education, with teachers, music, arts, sports, socialization, etc? Forever?

Pretty much.
And concerts, sporting events, travel, Broadway, NYC in general, working in an office, human contact, weddings, family get togethers, Christmas etc.
We need to hide. So nobody ever catches this or any other virus for that matter

I cried for hours after I heard that, it ruined my evening. We live in Nassau County, which is pretty much an extension of Queens. The principal said that NYC public schools are being pressured by their teacher's union to make a decision for September in the next 2-3 weeks. They are saying most likely scenario is a hybrid model. I looked it up, and did find that article. I believe whatever NYC does, LI will do.
Her speculation comes from her belief that a hybrid model will never work, and she believes they will just give up and keep the kids home full time. Apparently there was a principal's meeting, and they were all in agreement that regular school will not be a thing for the next 1-2 school years.

1-2 years?!? But then what? I’m all for keeping stuff closed temporarily as we’ve seen the curve flatten and my hospital is now seeing a small increase in cases, prediction is people loosing up and nicer weather but it’s not more than 2% on any given 48 hour period and the overall trend remains downward. BUT....
Education NEEDS to go back to the way it was at some point. How can kids learn via hybrid and I don’t get how this will work for working parents? I work in a hospital... eventually my kids will be school age and I can’t be leaving work to home school them. I’m doing it for preschool because I work 3-4 days a week so I think 2 days of schooling at home is fine for that and I don’t want my kids infecting others because of my exposure but no way can this go on an entire school year next year. Kids will never learn in the capacity they do now and long term, there will be a huge disparity between those educated vs. not and again in terms of jobs, those advantaged will likely have more more success

Yes all good points especially keeping in mind that a lot of the country WILL go back to school. We will be at a huge disadvantage in NY. Yes, the infection rate may increase. Are we still trying to have ZERO new cases?!

I think it was AP News that had an article about what different schools around the country are considering. They quoted the Supt. from Baldwin who said they're waiting on state guidance about whether they can take a different approach with different age groups. For example, let students old enough to be home alone so a hybrid of in person and online but have younger kids in school. She also mentioned party tents to allow for social distancing.

I think they're looking into so many options and it is a very complex situation. I truly hope they figure out a way for kids to be physically in school at least part of the time. As for what happens if someone tests positive...? It's a good question. I think elementary kids need to be in their classroom for all instruction, lunch, and specials. Does that mean that class has to stay home for a week or two if someone tests positive? I have no idea. It just seems that no matter what, they need to make online learning as good as they can get it bc it probably will not be gone forever come September.

Re: What do you think schools should do if someone tests positive COVID?

Once again I want to cry thinking about schools being closed next year. At this point I would settle for Half days/ split days, whatever just so the kids have SOME kind of normal classroom instruction. And I work full time so I have no idea how I would manage that kind of schedule but they need to be in a classroom with a live teacher in front of them.

Also why would it be safe to open in October but not September? I don’t get that reasoning at all.

I just can’t see how this would be a forever “new normal”. This is not the first virus that have existed (or at least type) and human life have adapted with time. If u look back in time, it has always happened that way, even with the always evolving flu! I don’t believe as time passes, we’ll be hit with huge waves whenever cities open up. I do believe in natural herd immunity. Of course ppl should be doing preventative things just like with the flu, like if u don’t feel good then stay home, wash ur hands properly, etc. Am I saying there will never be a death due to covid, ever? Absolutely not. There will be (just like with any other virus) but def not to the degree that has happened. Viruses that keep ppl locked up have never happened before in the whole time humanity have existed and obviously we haven’t gone extinct because of a virus.

I always like your posts. They are the complete opposite of most people on social media who are so sure about the immediate death of all of humanity. Thank you!

Maybe by then they will have a better handle on the facts of this virus. As of like last week, I read from a medical professional that in incubation for this us more like 5 days, not 14. If school doesn't resume as normal, we would likely move to a state where it does resume. My kid is bright, in honors classes and she isn't learning much from this remote garbage.

Well it's been a good run at least. We made it to 2020.
I made it 46 years of having a life.
I just feel bad that my daughter only got to experience 9 years of a real life.
Oh well.... the main thing is nobody ever catches this.

Exactly. I just want to cry. The thought of my kids not being in school, or being able to see and hug their grandparents, or go on a vacation, or walk freely without a mask, or have a birthday party or any of the countless other things that are life makes me sick to my stomach.

Jesus Christ, it's almost a 98% recovery rate, they're good odds. We cannot keep everyone from dying, that's a hard fact and while none of us are immune from this we need our freaking lives back. I cannot and will not live like this. We all deserve better, especially our children.

But yea, let's keep living in fear as society, the economy, relationships, education and mental health crumble all around us. Makes sense. Chat Icon

I’m not picking on you directly but if you’re comfortable with your kids seeing their grandparents they can do that now. They can see friends if you have friends willing to socialize—my neighbors opened their heated pool and have other kids over often. Nobody is stopping anybody from doing these things if they are comfortable doing them.

I agree also. And I refuse to get myself all worked up about September when it’s May.
4 months ago was January—So we see how quickly things can change in that amount of time.

I know, I agree BUT I feel like the climate we're living in right now has made people extremely judgemental so you almost feel uncomfortable doing anything.

I took my kids to Home Depot the other day for literally 10 minutes WITH MASKS on and you can see some people with their dirty looks. I felt like smacking someone. I think we are at a point with this where everyone needs to do what is best for them be that stay home forever, go out occasionally, take a walk with or without a mask, etc. Everyone needs to worry less about what others are doing and focus on themselves because nobody knows what someone is going through during this chaos.

I just want to get back to normal. Regular, old normal. Chat Icon

what are they going to do if parents go back to work?

we are basically saying if school is no open in fall you are not opening jobs because all I hear is that school has to open for kids to go back.

if they dont go back and say parent are allowed to send their kids to daycare wouldn't it be the same thing has sending kids to school?

If they dont go back (besides me flipping my shitt)
these superintendent and teachers better step up their game and actually start teaching!!!

My children's school had an open parent forum with the principal today. She told us that schools will most likely not reopen in September. She is hopeful that it will just be to work out the kinks, and they will open in October/November, but she can't see everything falling into place before that. Parents flipped.

I'd flip too! They have had NINE weeks so far to figure this out PLUS the next 3.5 months. These kids NEED to be in school and getting a proper education. This is absurd. Schools better get their sh!t together and BEFORE September!

And what exactly are the schools supposed to do about this virus??

I think they should definitely prepare--- for good quality coordinated and effective online education.

Online education will NEVER replace what kids get in school. School is more then just academics. Also, what should parents who need to work do in this situation where schools don't open??

COVID is another virus, one of MANY we've had to deal with over the years. The virus isn't going anywhere and life cannot stop forever. We are going to have to get back to life despite the virus, that's a simple fact.

Just asking, but are you currently an educator?

Regular old normal for who and for what. The bubble some of you people live is in so extraordinary. Do you even understand how insensitive you sound? My god you people need a reality check.

Regular old normal where I can just go about my privileged life so I don't have to think about how inconvenienced I am by a global pandemic. Me me me. American exceptionalism at its finest. My husband is European and cannot believe the culture of people who just think "well, who cares anymore, this is just another inconvenient truth."

I am a former elementary school teacher (taught in NYC schools) so yes, I have an understanding of the climate in schools, the difficulties the schools and teachers in teaching in a situation like this and how this will all affect students long term. MOST of my friends are teachers currently so I have insight into the nightmares they are dealing with on a daily basis.

Yeah no, you're not a current teacher so your anecdotal opinions hold zero weight. You're just an armchair quarterback really. If you are not currently in the thick of it as a teacher at this moment in time, you really know nothing.

Suicide, drug addiction, alcoholism, poverty, homelessness, starvation, physical abuse, mental illness, and death from illness and causes OTHER than the almighty Covid are NOT merely "inconveniences."

They can see friends if you have friends willing to socialize—my neighbors opened their heated pool and have other kids over often. Nobody is stopping anybody from doing these things if they are comfortable doing them.

Chat Icon

How unfortunate that you find people who want to live their lives (you know, the ONLY life we get) and wishing to see their families, friends and participate in everything that makes the human experience what it is insensitive or privileged. Give me an effing break, seriously. Chat Icon Good for you that you don't miss your old life, good for you that you don't miss the human experience that we have ALL come to know and appreciate in our lifetimes. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Sorry but I don't find ANYTHING wrong with me or anyone else missing their lives, missing their families and struggling to cope with 10 weeks of this insanity. You're in the MINORITY with your opinion, most everyone is struggling and miserable in one way or another with this.

What do you think schools should do if someone tests positive COVID?

I'm a teacher, and I'm still not exactly sure why the thinking is that if schools open, this will 100% spread like wildfire.

Many teachers had COVID in March leading up to the shut down and before we knew to take any precautions. If you look at the UFT number of how many members passed from COVID (way too many), it is without a doubt that many of them who passed early from this had it before the shutdown. A co-worker of mine was diagnosed the week of the shut down, meaning he was a carrier the week before when classes were still in session.

No one else in my tiny, cramped NYC school caught it. And if it truly did spread as much as people believe it would spread in a school, then we would be seeing numbers of cases in teachers and students way higher than what we saw.

Will it spread in schools? Sure. Just like it will in offices and stores and public transportation. No more and no less.

Suicide, drug addiction, alcoholism, poverty, homelessness, starvation, physical abuse, mental illness, and death from illness and causes OTHER than the almighty Covid are NOT merely "inconveniences."

AGREE!!! 100%

But I guess all of that is just American exceptionalism and all that privilege. How dare people care about their own problems, addictions, situations, mental health and instability. The nerve. We need to ONLY focus on the "greater good", to hell with everything else. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes exactly, and also remember that schools were fully in session during the most deadly period when most people caught the virus - and this was WITHOUT the extra precautions that people are taking now.

This teacher basically teaches in a converted closet with no window or quality air ventilation, and came in contact with dozens of students a day in just that room alone. Then the halls, office, elevator, teacher's lounge for lunch. We have a very close knot community of teachers and while others were infected, those infections came within the last two weeks and are not linked to this teacher since we have been home for 8 weeks.

I am a former elementary school teacher (taught in NYC schools) so yes, I have an understanding of the climate in schools, the difficulties the schools and teachers in teaching in a situation like this and how this will all affect students long term. MOST of my friends are teachers currently so I have insight into the nightmares they are dealing with on a daily basis.

Yeah no, you're not a current teacher so your anecdotal opinions hold zero weight. You're just an armchair quarterback really. If you are not currently in the thick of it as a teacher at this moment in time, you really know nothing.

Two degrees, experience, and living through remote learning with my own two kids gives me the ability to know FULL WELL that teaching remotely and teaching in the classroom is in NO WAY the same things, particularly when it comes to the more poverty stricken, disadvantaged and learning disabled students.

Sit down with your high and mighty bullsh!t, there isn't a parent, teacher or educator around that won't say the same thing which is, remote learning does NOT replace kids being in school for a myriad of reasons.

You seem awfully bitter about everything, maybe you need to step away from these forums. ((shrug))
