What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
So...I'm just putting it out there...I am soooooooooooooooooooooooooo beyond pizzed about the "no cupcakes for classroom birthdays" thing. My son and I started, what I thought, was a fun tradition that he helps me make his cupcakes for school. That boy was soooo proud to show off the cupcakes he made and loved to share them with his classmates.
So now, because apparently the school boards have NO other larger fish to fry, there goes our tradition.
But...can I ask why THIS is acceptable?!?!?!!?!?!!?!?
* Wrapping paper sale- what's in the catalog? 20 different tins of candy for sale.
* Open School Night last night. What was handed to us as we walked through the door- a cookie from the PTA.
* Candy Sale- it's mandatory! And it's 30 something HUGE candy bars we have to pay for and keep in the house or sell on the street corners!
* School bake sale...can't wait for that one.
Why, when it comes to OUR kids, everyone (that isn't the child's parent) is concerned about what they eat? But when it comes to raising $$ for the school, they are all about the supposed cr@p food.
I am so beyond ticked. I hate hypocrites.

Re: What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe if you sell your DC's b-day cupcakes to classmates for $.50, and give the school $.25 per cupcake, then they'll be OK with it....
Bureaucracy in action....

Re: What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
you arent allowed to make cupcakes anymore?? What is your child suppost to bring on there b-day, a carrot?? Its sad that they take that a way from them. Its the one day a child stand out infront of there class and feel good, especially for the shy ones, who may not stand out as much as others.

Re: What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
I could have written this post I made them anyway last year and DDs teacher was great about it since technically our principal told the teachers to encourage healthy snacks etc I was class mom and did what I wanted (with teachers permission of course) I basically snuck it by the principal
but it PISSES me off that you can sell candy and have bake sales but cupcakes for their birthday are not ok

This is a state wide mandate, not a district policy unfortunately. I'm bummed too, but I'll probably just make up little goodie bags and read a story to the class for his class bday party. I too got the fundraiser packet last night and thought the same thing

Some schools (I have no idea which ones) are banning ANY food for b-day celebrations....

Is this about junk food or food allergies? I figured it was concerns over kids who might get sick from the food.

Re: What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
Not to throw a kink in here but the reason for that is food allergies. My nephew has life threatening food allergies and when he was little, there would constantly be food he couldn't eat and if his Mom couldn't bring food he would just sit and watch everyone eat. Also he has such a severe nut allergy that if a child ate a snack with peanut butter and touched something and then he touched it he could go into anaphylactic shock as the oils can be absorbed through the skin. There are allergens in so many foods that someone not in the know may bake something thinking its allergy friendly and it could also cause shock or death.
I believe this is the reason for most schools not allowing foods in the classroom such as cupcakes.

its about childhood obesity
but you know what...I will say what MY child can and can't eat I feel they should send a letter home asking if you mind and if you dont want your child to eat cupcakes then you as the parent should have the right to say that

Re: What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh yeah...forgot to add these tidbits of info:
* If goodie bags are handed out, there is to be NOTHING edible in the bags. W T F??? Are the teacher's going to go through them and remove the fruit snack pack?
* As horrible as it is that you can't send in cupcakes for your child's birthday, the newspaper had suggested a FRUIT PLATTER!! OK...so I asked last night at Open School if we could do that, and the teacher said, No. No food at all. Un-freakin-believable.
Also wanted to add that I was a 2nd grade teacher in Queens- in a not-so-great area. MAYBE 4 out of 25 kids parents' brought in a treat to share for their child's birthday. For EVERY kids' birthday in my classroom, whether their parents brought something in or not, I BOUGHT cupcakes for the class in honor of the child's birthday. Maybe it's wrong of me, but that's how I like to celebrate children's birthdays- with a cupcake.
Really...I can't imagine what's next with these School Boards.

ITA. I could see them imposing store bought food only. Food allergies, "hygiene" of people cooking the food at home, etc....

And let me add this as well...since I am so burned up about this whole thing. ...My son's best friend has SEVERE food allergies. He is allergic to ANYTHING that has egg, dairy, or nuts. He has been hospitalized several times, it's really a sin.
Anyway...he is 5 (my son is in Kindergarten). My frined has taught her son that it is not OK for him to eat anything that he hasn't brought from home. And he KNOWS that. AS well as the teacher. When we have playdates, we have food, and we have Scott-friendly food (that's his friend with the allergies). And my other son's friend with SEVERE Celiac disease is accomodated as well.
These food allergies have been around FOREVER...yet there were still cupcakes in schools. Children that can't eat them, parents send in a letter and an alternate snack that the child CAN eat. Not too difficult.
I am so upset about this. I am having a cupcake for lunch!

Re: What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
DH & I were talking about this last night. His dad is a soccer coach for the younger kids, and they voted to have a candy sale to raise their annual funds. CANDY SALE. They are supposed to be athletes, and are supposed to be (IMO) the ones who should be displaying their good habits, KWIM? So no cupcakes, but by all means lets shove candy down everyone's throat with a side of guilt

I am baffeled by this decision. It amazes me that with all the other issues within schools that this gets attention. I'm so disgusted by it I think I'm going to go eat a dozen cupcakes in protest.

Re: What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
Luckily my ds's school only requests a healthy snack for in class however for b-day parties, or holiday parties we can bring what ever junk we want. I have heard though of a lot of schools banding junk food. I would totally be upset also because like you me and my son have a tradition of making all desserts for school together.

Re: What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
All this outrage has put me in the mood to bake some cupcakes. DS is only 15 months though and doesn't go to school but I feel like baking them...
It is ridiculous though and I cannot believe that by the time my son goes to school that bringing in cupcakes will be banned in all schools. I won't even be able to bring in cookies for that matter either. How dumb!
What I would do when the schools have their fund raiser thing where they sell candy is to refuse to participate because you refuse to sell junk food that causes obesity. Could you even do that?

Re: What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
Totally agree with you on the hypocrite thing.
It's not state mandated. My district is still doing them and tomorrow is cupcake day for Joseph.
Joseph brought a note in to his teacher asking if there were any allergies in his class. His teacher responded no & if I could have the cupcakes there in the am. He came home, gave me the note & then asked "Do I need to bring in something special for someone who has allergies? I don't want anyone getting hurt." (yeah, unless you hit them, that is )
Anyway, my point is that kids are very aware of allergies. Maddie repeatedly asks if what she is eating has soy in it because Billy is allergic to soy. Sometimes Billy gets the cool snacks & the other kids can't have his snack. It evens out.
If this was about allergies, I would give it more weight. This is how they are choosing to combat obesity - which is absurd.
