Totally agree with you on the hypocrite thing.
It's not state mandated. My district is still doing them and tomorrow is cupcake day for Joseph.
Joseph brought a note in to his teacher asking if there were any allergies in his class. His teacher responded no & if I could have the cupcakes there in the am. He came home, gave me the note & then asked "Do I need to bring in something special for someone who has allergies? I don't want anyone getting hurt." (yeah, unless you hit them, that is )
Anyway, my point is that kids are very aware of allergies. Maddie repeatedly asks if what she is eating has soy in it because Billy is allergic to soy. Sometimes Billy gets the cool snacks & the other kids can't have his snack. It evens out.
If this was about allergies, I would give it more weight. This is how they are choosing to combat obesity - which is absurd.
Hmm, my sons teacher said it was a state mandate. I know NJ has a state mandate. Now I wondering if she was fibbing about it

Story about cupcake ban, from Newsday 9-17-2007
...a growing number of Long Island elementary schools, joining the fight against childhood obesity, abolish cupcakes in the classrooms.
Across Long Island, at least eight school districts recently curbed unhealthy treats at birthday parties, according to state and regional organizations that track such developments. The bans are part of broader policies adopted by schools in other states that also promote more exercise and better nutrition in school cafeterias.
Sounds like each district is making their own rules, not a state mandate.

Sorry. I always forget the world does not revolve around me. I'm in NY. No state mandate in NY.

I agree with you, how can they say no cupcakes for birthdays, and then force you to sell candy?

I live in NJ...and last school year, my step-daughter brought in cupcakes the last week of school (because her birthday is over the summer) and nobody said anything about it. I didn't even know about this "rule" until yesterday when I was reading it on this board.
I agree with joenick...for lunch, they serve crap (pizza, chicken nuggets, french fries, snapple juices from the vending machine loaded with sugar). They have ice-cream sales, bake sales, candy sales, class parties with all kinds of junk food throughout the year...I don't think a cupcake is going to hurt in the long-run.

Re: What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
My mom used to drop off my neice at the before-care program at elementary school last year. On the last day of before-care (around 8:00 am), they were having an ICE-CREAM party My mom says to the lady, you are giving these kids ice cream at 8:00 am...and her response was "yeah, it's the last day and it's a party" When my neice was asked if she wanted ice cream, she said...no, I'm not allowed to have ice cream for breakfast

Re: What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
I think everyone needs to write their School Board president AND newsday..comment on the article. This is just dumb..you cannot tell a child it is not okay to eat a cupcake for a birthday but it is okay to buy a HUGE candy bar to eat. How about we start with SCHOOL LUNCHES....where is the salad on the menu with lowfat dressing? Where is the whole grain breads and FRESH local fruit? No place. Also, it is very important to teach children that sweets are NOT bad..they are not good healthy choices for every day but they are fine as a treat! Will they ban Halloween next? If it is because of allergies that is one thing but do not hide behind "healthy"...speak up..voice your opinion. YOU pay taxes. It is YOUR school.

Re: What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
In addition to what everybody else has said, shouldn't we be teaching our children the "everything in moderation" rule? Shouldn't they learn that it is okay to have a cupcake to celebrate somebody's birthday? If we ban it from them altogether, how do they learn moderation? We'll be raising a generation of closet junk food eaters.
And ITA with refusing to participate in any sales involving junk food if this is the position the school is going to take.

Re: What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
This is so ridiculous. They to take care of the crappy lunches and the junk food for sale to the kids before banning once-a-month birthday cupcakes!

I definitely see a double standard and think it's ridiculous. I could understand if they banned homemade foods... I've always been hesitant of eating homemade food from people I don't know personally. Our daycare only allows commercially prepared foods.

* School bake sale...can't wait for that one.
You so have to make cupcakes for that one! And make them birthday ones with your DS so that you at least can have somewhat of that tradition back.
I am really disappointed by this ban as well. I was looking forward to making cupcakes for my children. I used to do it for my younger sister and had a blast with her.

They learn moderation at home, it's not really the schools job to teach that. I feel sorry for the diabetic kids in the class that can't have that cupcake but have to watch other the other kids indulge.
I can defininately see *why* they are implementing these changes, but they should do it across the board, not just for bday parties. Our district tries to offer healthy lunches for the kids. They list the fat, calorie content for each weeks meals, and even had whole wheat pizza last year. But yet they offer ice cream as an ala carte item Or even offer candy as a reward, but don't get me started on THAT

Re: What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
what if I make cupcakes from cooking light magazine and teach kids that it's ok to eat certain things in moderation, and when you do make something - you can use alternative ingredients...like applesauce instead of oil?
It's just stupid, I guess it's going to be snack packs of carrots for our kids...booooooring!!

NOOOOO!!! Not carrots!!!!! My DS has a severe carrot allergy! His face scrunches up, his head turns to the side, and his arms stick straight out, pushing the plate away!
It's only an occasional allergy, apparently. Sometimes he can eat them without a reaction.

I'm so glad you all agree with me. I just find it is so sad that our children cannot enjoy the same simplicity that we had as children- sharing cupcakes with your classmates to celebrate your birthday.

I think we can teach out kids not to take 4 cupcakes instead of just one. School boards can't solve the obesity issue. Leave it up to the parents I say!

I totally agree, healthy food choices should be taught at home. It amazes me that my son's HS serves FRIES with Pizza and they don't have the option of getting something else

Certain districts have adopted the policy of "no cupcake birthday celebrations" in class.
Some schools had this policy in affect before this school year, but since my son is only in Kindergarten and only went to Catholic schools before now, this is the first I am hearing of it.
And I am !
