In addition to what everybody else has said, shouldn't we be teaching our children the "everything in moderation" rule? Shouldn't they learn that it is okay to have a cupcake to celebrate somebody's birthday? If we ban it from them altogether, how do they learn moderation? We'll be raising a generation of closet junk food eaters.
And ITA with refusing to participate in any sales involving junk food if this is the position the school is going to take.
They learn moderation at home, it's not really the schools job to teach that. I feel sorry for the diabetic kids in the class that can't have that cupcake but have to watch other the other kids indulge.
I agree that lessons need to be taught at home, but I think lessons like this that all children should be taught should be continued in the classroom. And regarding the diabetic kids thing, I see your point, but the same thing happens when they go to the lunchroom and see other kids eating sweets witht their lunches. If they're going to ban sweets, then they have to do it across the board.

Re: What hypocrites!!!!!!!!!!!
I didn't read the article, but from what I can gather, it's banning junk food for birthday parties, no? Not for nothing, but I don't really see the big deal with that. As a teacher, I can tell you that many parents don't stop at just a cupcake. There's loads and loads of other crap that gets passed around, too. We've banned junk food for snacks, b-day parties, classroom parties, birthdays, etc. for a couple of years now and the kids don't miss it at all. They have come up with some really adorable alternatives. Fruit shishkabobs, a magician in the classroom for the kids, parents in doing an activity, sand toys in buckets, children donating books to the classroom in their name for their birthday, etc. Not everything needs to revolve around food. Especially with all of the food allergies that there are. And you need to know that MANY food allergies that children have are airborn, and they can also get sick from the oils in foods that leave residue on desks, door knobs, etc. Yes, I've actually seen it happen. Unfortunately, the allergies that these kids have are not your regular, run of the mill allergies like we all had. They are really severe. And there's MANY children like this. In my small school, we have over a dozen and a half children with life-threatening allergies. That's more than one per class. That's a high number. Anyway, that was a tangent because this thread was about the hypocricy of the whole thing, and I agree, ban it for the classroom, then ban it across the board.
