I just wanted to know if your DC gets OT, what do they work on with your child?

what are some activities or things that they do or work on your child?

I know there is so many different things and every child is different but I am just interested in knowing about OT.

DD gets evaluated for OT tomorrow. not sure if she will qualify or not but wanted to know what to expect?

DD has sensory issues. I have heard that they dont typically give OT services for these types of issues. I heard its only for fine motor issues and DD is turning 2.

how long does an OT session last?

I was wondering this too.

DS just completed his eval. We are waiting for our meeting, but suspect he'll receive it.

He has sensory stuff going on, as well as a little bit of fine motor stuff.

I didn't go back in the gym when the girl did the eval. I think she wanted to observe him more w/o me.

One other time we met briefly with an OT and he had him try stuff with scissors and small items and writing and such.

ETA: DS just turned 4 though. Your's is so much younger :).

Your child is younger than my 2. They both recieve OT.

At that age, if I remember correctly, I think it was:

Squishing Playdough
Putting stuff in a container (they look for the pincer grasp)
Using one finger to press a button/point
Maybe turning pages of a book (not sure if that was OT though).

Ours did a combination of fine motor and sensory activities. They typically don't approve kids for OT just for sensory issues, but IMO, a good OT will address it with them either way, or at the very least, give you some ideas of how you can work with her. In fact, I would ask the evaluator that anyway, in case you don't get approved for services.

In EI, sessions were 45 minutes, in preschool and now in school 30 minutes. My DS's OT also worked with him on crossing midline - he would only use his right hand to do things on his right side and left hand to pick up or do things on his left side. She would work on getting him to use one hand for everything, moving his hand across his body to the other side to do things. She worked on writing, cutting, puzzles, she had different games and activities they would do to improve his fine motor skills and work on some of his sensory issues.

This person said it best. We get 45 min 2x's a week. There are no sensory issues with my son but he needed help with midline & keeping right palm open.

We have a ball pit & I hear that is VERY GOOD for sensory issues if you want to try that.

Re: what is a typical OT session like?

At my school they work on sensory issues as well as fine-motor tasks, handwriting, etc. She will have kids pick up coins off a desk, use tweezers to pick things up, transfer items from one hand to another. She will also have them walk like animals, wheelbarrow, etc. to build up muscles in their hands/arms. She also does some deep pressure, sensory integration work with some of my guys.

The thing I like most is she teaches them how to use sensory strategies throughout the whole day, to keep calm, focused etc.
