What is allowed for a birthday party in school these days?
DS is starting kindergarten the day before his birthday. I know there are alot of rules with all the allergies. What can I have him bring in for the class to celebrate his birthday? It was so easy in "the old days" with a huge box of Munchkins!

It varies by school. Some require you send is a pre-packaged item that allows the teacher to read the ingredient list, some let you send in homemade items.
You can call the school before the first day and ask. I know our principal will be back in the building starting next week so the office ladies will be in then too.

LOL It totally depends on the school and even teacher. I thought things needed to be prepackaged with a label and so many parents still send in home made things.

We had severe allergies in DS's class this year and last.
Oreos were suggested, we were also allowed to send in dunkin donuts.

i'm not sure about my district yet- i have to ask around. In my SIL's district and a family friends district (2 different districts) there is a NO food policy!!! The teachers suggests you bring in things like bubbles, yo yos , little goodie bags with little trinkets but NO candy or snacks. I'm not sure if its because of allergies or the healthy eating plans.

My school depends on class each year. Son's first year you could bring whatever. No allergies in class. 2nd year we had a lot of allergies and you had to bring something prepackaged. You can still bring munchkins but they were the pop 'ems kind.

Oreos and Munchkins are good for kids with nut allergies. Italian Ices if you're bringing the snack in

We can only bring in "healthy" pre-packaged foods, so Oreos are usually out. They recommend the 100 calorie snack-packs (which little kids CRAVE... )
Definitely check with the school, though.

While Munchkins are made without peanuts/tree nuts or nut oil, they are not safe for kids with nut allergies. All the DDs in our town have signs on the door warning about the possibility of cross contamination due to nuts in other products they sell.

Thanks everyone! I'm not going to stress about it too much because he only has a half day that day anyway. I will ask at the open house.

we can only bring in 'healthy' items for bdays. Fruit salad/cups & pretzels are suggested. We made mini blue berry muffins, which went over well (though not super 'healthy')

We don't have any restrictions, so I buy mini cup-cakes and inform the parents of the child in question that I will be doing that. They send in a safe snack for the occasion.

No more cupcakes for us either, seems italian ices or small ice cream cups are the norm at my kids school.

Really? My DS has a nut allergy and on the list of approved foods from his allergists office Munchkins are on there.

Maybe it's changed, but when my DS was diagnosed peanut allergic 2 years ago his allergist told us no more DD. We don't go by there anymore, but one of the parents in my DS's class asked last year since she saw the sign on the door. Maybe b/c ours have Baskin Robbins too?
ETA: I was curious, so I called the stand alone DD in our town. The guy who answered the phone said they don't recommend them for people with peanut allergies. The other 2 by me have Baskin Robbins in them as well, so those toppings are definitely a cross contamination issue.

Re: What is allowed for a birthday party in school these days?
Our district has a "no food" policy as well. We send in fancy pencils, stickers, etc. My son is starting the second grade and due to all of the pencils he receives for birthdays, I may never have to buy another pencil again!

Thank you! I am going to have to contact the school nurse and cross Munchkins off his safe food list. He's had them plenty of times but you never know when it will give them a reaction.

Re: What is allowed for a birthday party in school these days?
Our teacher was WONDERFUL with parties. We had a few children with food allergies (including DS) and she would personally call the parents of these kids and ask what foods are allowed and what is not. She then would speak to the parents giving parties and advise them of these concerns. We had great class parties with all of the kids having a great time- and with cup cakes, cake, juice ect.

Re: What is allowed for a birthday party in school these days?
Our school district just passed a 'no food for birthdays' rule. So nothing food related to celebrate a birthday. Last year in kindergarten we had an approved list.
