What is considered a good starting salary?

I was just reading thread about entry level jobs in NYC/LI starting at $25K (before taxes) and I'm wondering how anyone could live on that? Living with parents? Roommates?

What is an average starting salary with a 4 year degree? I know teachers, police officer and fire fighters are notriously known as being underpaid but what about other fields i.e., advertising/marketing; technology; science; engineering fields?

Re: What is considered a good starting salary?

Too broad of a question - there is no average starting salary - it would depend on the field.

depends on your field.

I made way less than that and managed. Okay, I had to eat mac and cheese and PB&J on a daily basis, but I got by.

Depends on the industry. Publishing is notoriously low, even at the most prestigious publishing houses. IB is probably highest. Some IT. But I'd say "good" for any liberal arts major 21-22 year old's first job is anything over 35-40, if the benefits are also good and there is room for growth.

Re: What is considered a good starting salary?

I had this discussion with a male friend a few years ago - 2005 I think - and we came to the conclusion that to live in Manhattan below 96th St. in at least a one bedroom w/o a roommate one would need to make about $70K before taxes.

Re: What is considered a good starting salary?

It depends on the industry. I make less than half as much as FH does with the same amount of education (and much better grades in school). It's REALLY hard, but it's reality.

ETA: Most of the jobs I applied for out of college were in the $30-$35K range. And I have a degree and a lot of experience in sales, admin, education, management, etc. I work my buns off and commute 30 miles each way for the little I do make.

I'm in that position right now - I've been on many interviews, and the amount of work for the salary is INSANE.

I have a business degree - and a 4.0 GPA - and 4 years exp as an admin assistant, and I've been offered anywhere from $25k to $32k.

Re: What is considered a good starting salary?

I would think it would be higher than that-- that was my starting salary 10 years ago...

ETA-- I work(ed) in advertising.

I agree that it completely depends on the field. IT people are pretty cheap ($30-35K, maybe?) because we get them on paid internships. Once they're done, they often stick around for minimal raises.

I think that would be hard to do (even for 2 years ago), especially if someone has student loans. My company has 2 corporate apartments. The 1 bedroom is approximately $2800/mo. The 2 bedroom is now over $4K/mo. The studios were going for $1700+ 2 years ago. That's mid-town west side. The only advantage is you don't need a car.

Re: What is considered a good starting salary?

I would say $35K is decent for a recent college grad nowadays.

I spoke with a woman I know today who's daughter just started teaching on LI (Suffolk). she just graduated college in May and is going for her Masters now. she started at $46K and will get a $3K increase when she gets her masters. I thought that was really decent.

I think the teachers actually have some of the highest starting salaries on Long Island with a Bachelor's degree. I think the average for a liberal arts degree is $25-mid $30s, and I think most people either live at home or have roommates. No one I know lived alone in the city right out of college (unless their parents were subsidizing them). When I was interviewing in college (7 years ago Chat Icon) the highest paying jobs I interviewed for were with consulting companies or Wall Street firms that paid between $45 and $50,000, but I went to an ivy league school and some only wanted ivy grads. As for who is paying for the high-priced apts in Manhattan--well, my brother is making over $175,000 in his first year after graduating law school at a Wall Street firm. It's just that liberal arts grads are a dime a dozen.

I started working in 1999 for a radio rep firm @ 21K - I lived in Queens and supported myself because I had no choice but to do so!

I know that company notoriously paid low though.

My parentsChat Icon

Seriously, they sold their house on Long Island and moved to 92nd and York 3 years ago. My dad is the president of a company in midtown and my mom is a retired teacher. So, they can afford rent and to live.

In fact, my sister (who will be 25 at the end of this month) moved back in with them.

No I don't but the girls I work with do and make the same amount.
I have more than tripled my salary since I started but I should be making alot more in the position I am in but because of my old boss, we are all making less than others who are doing the same thing in the company.
