Re: What is considered a good starting salary?

You know, not to sidetrack this post but... it really depends on the practice. I worked at a Major NYC law firm in securitizations and while we didn't get in to 10 am we were usually there well past midnight. We were INCREDIBLY busy even though they kept hiring. I often cried at my desk because every meal I had was at the firm. The partners were nice people but we were crazy busy plus all associates were constantly watching eachother to see if someone got to leave at 8.
I think areas like tax or real estate for instance may have more ebbs and flows but we were always swamped.
ITA with that. I work in the real estate department in my firm, and they work the first years to the bone - 12 hour days and weekends - at least when the market is on an upswing. They earn every penny of their salary and then some (160k, like most of the big firms now). My girlfriend who is a secretary in the securitization dept. works an incredible amount of overtime - even more than I do and I'm one of the busiest secretaries on my floor. The litigation department, however, has much more 'normal' hours.

In my field right now (radiography)the starting salary is anywhere from $50k to 65K...
Bottom line to me is you can make more money in this type of field than you can with a bachelors degree and non specific job....I have a friend who got a trade type cert and makes double the $$ I do. Of course there are payoffs but most are worth it IMO. Also you have more freedom with these sorts of jobs than a 9-5. With commuting your whole life is your job....and for 35-40K? Sorry not worth it IMO.
I am in sales-just started with a new company but I have a very aggressive base plus commission. Some of the more experienced reps are making 130-150K. I work in higher education sales

Re: What is considered a good starting salary?
I also wanted to add companies will pay what people accept. If I owned a company and someone would take 30 without negotiating I would pay 30! If all the applicants(this is not realistic) decided--we will not accept less than 45K you can bet your azz thats what the companies' would pay. Also someone said...you have to add in benefits, 401 K etc. Sounds like you have been brainwashed my friend...that is what corporate America puts out there so they don't have to pay more aggressively

i started in public accounting in 2002 at $52k with a masters degree. I think they start 4 year degrees at $55k now.
BUT i was very overworked and if you considered the amount of hours i worked, i made less than minimum wage. But it was worth it to stick it out and now 5 years later i have a much better job and time to have a life!
wow, I was making that in public accounting after 3 years in the field...that is crazy that that is the starting salary
I started in public accounting right out of college at $42k. I left 2.5 years later making $51k and first years were making $48k. While it is a very thankless job and you work a lot of hours I highly recommend this route to any accountant coming out of school because now, 8 years later, they still look for people who have public experience (and either a CPA/MBA). Plus, i learned so much in those 2.5 years. I think I can safely say that most people that I started with are at least making double what they made when we started. Some making much more. It's a good field to go into because there will always be a job there for you. But, its not for everyone.

Re: What is considered a good starting salary?
i am in public relations. i graduated from a four year school with a degree in public relations and was making 30K. This was in 2003. I had also worked part-time at the agency that hired me on full time for almost a year beforehand. This included fully company paid health insurance and vaca time. they did not offer 401K or anything else.
i'm told that for my industry, a 30K start was good. I've heard that standard is 25-28. that said, i was there for four years, got two promos and my salary only went up 12K, so in that respect, I do not think that company was so generous. It was a great place for me to start though, and I was very, very lucky not to have to worry about finding a job right out of school.

i agree, it's a good route. i picked it because it was a very reliable career- you'll always need accountants.
Also, i lived in a studio by myself in murray hill making $52k. my rent was $1300. so it's possible.
but most starting salaries for marketing, business, etc. are more like 35-40 in the city.

I agree that accounting is a good field but public accounting sucks...I worked in public for 6 years and I am now working in private at a financial services company and I am SO MUCH happier

Re: What is considered a good starting salary?
I didn't realize that there were so many public accountants on here I started at a Big Four firm in 2002 making $48K (no masters). I lived comfortably in a studio for $1200. DH started in architecture making $28K and lived with two roommates for $800. You make it work!
As for who is buying those apts... Wall Street bonuses and Europeans who see US real estate as a good investment considering the value of the euro.

My sister just graduated college last year (with a 4 yr. bachelor's degree) and she makes $28,000 in Manhattan.
As for the big law firm jobs, I agree that the high salary does not justify the hours. I used to work for a very large NY firm (in M&A), but I was staying past midnight most nights (with the occassional all-nighter or double all-nighter). It was miserable. Not worth the $$$ IMHO.
WOW! 28K in Manhattan, that is pretty bad. What does she do.

Re: What is considered a good starting salary?
depends on the field. depends on where you live. It really depends on many things.
My first teaching job out of grad school was a LR position for a Nassau County district, and I started at $59,000. That was seven years ago. I thought that was a pretty damn good starting salary.
