Re: What is considered a good starting salary?
Wow, I am really surprised and perhaps I should not complain about my job so much.
I started 7 1/2 years ago at my company as an Admin. Assistant and I started at 35K base, with full health and profit sharing plus bonus (at the time it was pretty small, like 1K a year, but it was still a bonus). I have an Associate's Degree in Business Administration from Katharine Gibbs.

Re: What is considered a good starting salary?
Posted by hazeleyes33 No I don't but the girls I work with do and make the same amount. I have more than tripled my salary since I started but I should be making alot more in the position I am in but because of my old boss, we are all making less than others who are doing the same thing in the company.
You started at less than $15,000 for full time? I thought at one point you said you work for the state?

Re: What is considered a good starting salary?
honestly-if ur in a more specialized area-doctor, lawyer, etc, where you NEED a college degree, thats where you make more
i do not think you need a college degree to make a good salary-my sil makes a LOT! and she doesnt have a college degree-
i would personally think 35k is a good starting salary

I think $35K is the average for the city, but high for a Long Island Admin Asst job with an Associate's. Long Island jobs are harder to come by.

I spoke with a woman I know today who's daughter just started teaching on LI (Suffolk). she just graduated college in May and is going for her Masters now. she started at $46K and will get a $3K increase when she gets her masters. I thought that was really decent.
I think the teachers actually have some of the highest starting salaries on Long Island with a Bachelor's degree. I think the average for a liberal arts degree is $25-mid $30s, and I think most people either live at home or have roommates. No one I know lived alone in the city right out of college (unless their parents were subsidizing them). When I was interviewing in college (7 years ago ) the highest paying jobs I interviewed for were with consulting companies or Wall Street firms that paid between $45 and $50,000, but I went to an ivy league school and some only wanted ivy grads. As for who is paying for the high-priced apts in Manhattan--well, my brother is making over $175,000 in his first year after graduating law school at a Wall Street firm. It's just that liberal arts grads are a dime a dozen.
OOOOOooooo! What firm is paying 1st years $175K? Skadden was the top paying firm at $145K for first years?

Re: What is considered a good starting salary?
When I graduated from law school first year ADA's were making $39,000 with a raise of $3K once they passed the bar exam. That was years ago and I think the salary is up to about $50K to start now.

I FMd you his firm, but they started at $160,000 with signing bonuses of up to $25,000 or more. His came to $175. This is at one of the mega firms, and he was #1 in his class and Editor of the law review at an ivy law school so his signing bonus was higher than average. Of course he pays in blood and is attached to his Blackberry, and to me no amount of money is worth what he does.

That's true. $145K across the board at Skadden, Sullivan & the other major ones. Sullivan started it back in February. Skadden rocked the boat when they decided to match Sullivan with $145K across the board not just in NYC. I'm sure if you include signing bonuses, it could easily get up that high.
Then again if you break it down to an hourly rate, you don't need to pay rent. You could move into your office.

Simpson Thacher raised it to $160K plus signing bonuses of up to $30,000 for first years, in which case it sounds like he didn't get a great deal with only $175K when he could have had $190

I think you hit the nail on the head, Barb. People don't realize that is 145K with the bonus, salary, fringe benefits, health, stock, 401K, etc. When you put all of that in there, it brings the annual income up drastically. But, I'm sure most people just starting out aren't seeing all that money in their check.

my first real job was about this salary - right out of college- finance degree.
finance and accounting are in demand these days, so the pay is pretty good.
my friend who is an RN started at mid $50s out of school (bachelors)

Been there...done that But if you can stand it for a few years you can pay off a lot of debt and have a decent chunk in a 401K, savings and a house/apartment And then leave and get a job with "normal" hours to pay for it all

Most major firms upped their starting salaries to about 160K at the beginning of 2007. When you add bonus to that it can easily bring it up to 175K. I know that people my year (6th years) can make up to 400K with bonus at my old firm. Alas, I am no longer in a firm but I do have a life now
Anyway, to answer the question, in 1999 when my husband graduated college he came out making about 52K (engineering job)

I got $35K out of school 5 years ago - in retail- which is typically not a high paying field
I would think the starting salary is closer to $40K now- or I would like to hope

Re: What is considered a good starting salary?
I started at $33,500 in late 2001 in retail in NJ (corporate) with a 4 year degree. Good benefits and growth. Until we filed chapter 11. But my next job I started at $25K more than my ending salary at the first so it really prepared me well.

Re: What is considered a good starting salary?
I lived on $21K in 1998. ( In Manhattan, with a BA)
I had a roommate in Astoria, no car cell phone, cable, etc.
I work at the same place & the last time we hired my old posotion , I think it was at$26-$28 ( 3 years ago)
Most of our new people live in Brooklyn, with roomates, or significant others, but some how have much nicer things than I ever did!
Some people who posted above started out at more than I make now! I'm so in the wrong field!

Re: What is considered a good starting salary?
My sister got hired nine years ago in a school district as a reading teacher. She has been teaching there ever since and now has tenure, her master's and 75 credits above her master's (equal to her doctorate but in her district they don't pay more for one over the other so she just stays at 75 above).
Anywho, she started off making $44,000 a year nine years ago teaching and it has increased (she has a salary increase chart) every year since... So, now she is around $82,000 (of course, her having her master's and 75 additional credits make her at the highest possible salary group).
I figured I would give her as an example- hope that helps.
