what is considered a normal temperature when using a rectal thermometer?

On Tuesday DS had a temp of 101, and all day after the Tylenol wore off it would go back up...then yesterday it was in the 100 range (from 100.1 to 100.9) now today it is in the 99 range - should it be 98.6 rectally? He still feels warm to me when I touch his forehead

ETA: I also took it with the forehead thermometer and it is in the high 99 range...any thoughts?

I think at 1 the normal temp is still higher than ours. I think normal for them is 100.5.

Infants and young toddlers...anything about 100.4 is considered a fever.

If you are taking their temp at night, it's going to be a little higher because of daily activity.

If it's a digital thermometer, read the instructions that came with it. I have 2 different digital ones and one says to add a degree to get an equivalent oral temp and one says to subtract a degree to get an equivalent oral temp.

My ped says normal temp is anything 100.3 and under - he says 100.4 and up is considered a fever - those temps are rectal temps. He doesn't go by any other methods of taking temps.
