what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
I wish being fair was considered a good thing. All my life I got, "Wow, you are so pale!" Why do people insist on saying that? It never sounds like a compliment.
Why is being pale, or fair such a bad thing? Especially now that we all know that tanning isn't even healthy?
I wish I could ignore it and just wear clothes that show off my legs without being so concerned about people making comments!
Does anyone else have an issue with this?

WORD!! Even my father tells me "you need some color."
I tell him that a tan lasts a few weeks, a wrinkle lasts a lifetime.

You took the words right out of my mouth.
Never, ever will I go to a tanning salon. This is the way I was born... get over it. I embrace my paleness!!
BTW: Not a sun or a beach person. Many people my age are starting to get wrinkled like a prune due to their sun worship. Not me

I agree with you- nothing wrong with being pale.
It's partially a cultural standard of beauty, I think. In the Philippines, being pale is a GOOD thing. There's all kinds of skin bleaching creams available.

I am pale too and have learned to be proud of it. If someone tells me I am too pale I tell them so what. I would never ever go to a tanning salon, not even if you paid me. I don't need: - premature wrinkles - leathery skin OR - SKIN CANCER

Yes, I'm "translucent" I've been told... Just the way I am. I would love to have the coloring the rest of my family has, but I just wasn't born with that gene.
Once, I was sitting in between my sister's FIL and my brother when we were all out to dinner, and my sister looks at me and says "damn... you look like the white in between an oreo"

I agree its cultural, or even a "time period" thing. In the 1800's being pale was highly in fashion, women were supposed to have "porcealin skin" and walked around with parasols to protect themselves from the sun. Anyone who had a "tan" was actually considered to be "lower class" because it meant they had to work outside. If you were pale then you were rich enough to have some one do the outdoor tasks for you.

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
I LOVE being pale!! (obvioulsy, based on my name here!) I don't go out in the sun because I hate to sweat...and I'm not a huge fan of wrinkles either. I show off my fair skin in the summer - I think it's great. Sure, I get comments...but I could care less. I'll be the one laughing when everyone else has wrinkles!

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
I am VERY fair skinned. But, comments never bothered me. I still wear skirts and dresses, etc. I NEVER tan and hide from the sun as much as possible. Sometimes I'll use a tanning lotion. Like the Jergens that has the tint in it, but not usually.
Embrace that pale skin!

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
I need to remember all this when I start feeling this way.
I am soooo mad at myself. My friends made a comment to me at work the other day, so I broke down and went tanning the other day, and I fryed my entire body!! I look like a lobster! I can barely move.
Luckily I covered my face with a t-shirt. I just wanted my legs to have a little color.
NEVER AGAIN!!!

Awwww - that blows.
I notice that you are extremely health conscious through your posts on Diet and Fitness. Tell your friends that you don't want to let all of your hard work to keep you healthy on the inside go to waste by becoming unhealthy on the outside.

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
I'm pale and while I'd like to be able to tan, I can't, and I live with it. I think a little pinkish or tannish is nice, but too much looks tacky to me.

Pablo Picasso's daughter, Palameno made tanning popular. Her father sent her away when she was a teenager for a summer vacation and she came back very dark and this made it popular.

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
I think it is rude to comment on skin color if it isn't a complement, it's similar to saying your too fat, or too skinny, or too muscular, or you don't like my shirt, etc.
I should say 'thank you' next time!!!

Nothing is wrong about having a fair complexion. People probably just associate it with not looking healthy.

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
My legs are super pale and veiny, but I'm not giving in to the tanning thing. I AM going to do some Mystic Tanning though A real tan may look nice, but the risk of skin cancer (and premature aging) just isn't worth it to me.

Pale is my middle name!
I have no color to my skin at all. My brother and I are so light. My mom and sister have a peachy tone so it helps a little.
I have gotten comments ALL MY LIFE and its very annoying! I feel like its the same as if I went up to a person with darker skin and said omg your skin is so dark! I would never, ever do that!!!
When I was in grammar school people called me "milk." I hated it but as I got older I am proud of my fair skin..its what being irish gets ya!
