Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
I NEVER tan either.
I burn, it peels, then I am pale again. Ive tried everything. To be honest though, I dont think I would even like myself with a tan. Its just not "me." It looks kinda weird. Not to mention, when I do sit out in the sun, my freckles pop out even more which I HATE!

wow, it beats getting skin cancer, you shriveled prune
wow, I shake what my momma gave me.
wow. i may be albino. its not nice to make fun of an albino.
any of the above should work

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
I'm fair-skinned as well and covered in freckles. I love it personally! I don't like to tan or look tan... maybe because I don't tan so well! I wear SPF 45 from May - October 7 days a week to avoid getting tan / burned / skin cancer. I freckle more in the summer regardless, though I can't control that.
I just let the comments slide. I look and feel healthy and that's what matters. I say let the pale legs out!

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
I am extremely fair and it is far and away my biggest self-esteem issue. Part of it is my own doing but the rest of it absolutely stems from other people's comments DH and I went to Hawaii for 2 weeks and I got a lot of (good) color which is rare for me. We got home nad I can't tell you how many people said "why is he tan and you're so pale?". First of all, people, pale = sickly. Fair is a skin tone, not pale
I even get strangers coming up to me when I'm outside and asking me if I have sunscreen on. No, I've lived with this body for 28 years but it takes you to point out that I need sunscreen. Jack-arse

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
Yes, welcome to my world. I am WHITE. I mean WHITE. I reflect the sun as per my DH, Im Italian and you would not even know by looking at me. I burn and peel. I refuse to bake in the sun, and go to the tanning salon. So I am used to all the names, pasty is my favorite by the way. Better safe then sorry.

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
I'm also really pale, and whenever I go away to a sunny case and come back with only a hint of color (I load up on sunscreen b/c I'd rather have no color than a burn!) people are always like, "did it rain the whole time?"
I really hate when people comment on skin tone too, it's rude.

same here, even when I have a lot of color, I am still fairly light-skinned.

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
I have this problem as well. Someone last week said to me "Wow, you must sunburn very easily. You are very pale, you know." I replied "No, I didn't know. Thanks for telling me."
One note: I am not self conscious about being pale. As a matter of fact, I love it. My skin is beautiful and I refuse to feel "less than" because I am lighter skinned. Why not just be happy with the way you are?

I wish being fair was considered a good thing. All my life I got, "Wow, you are so pale!" Why do people insist on saying that? It never sounds like a compliment.
Why is being pale, or fair such a bad thing? Especially now that we all know that tanning isn't even healthy?
I wish I could ignore it and just wear clothes that show off my legs without being so concerned about people making comments!
Does anyone else have an issue with this?
WELCOME TO MY WORLD
About 20 minutes ago the man that works downstairs came up to say hi and give us our mail and he looks at my legs (I have dressy shorts on) and goes "wow, you NEED to see some sun" and I just looked at him like that was so rude.
I get it ALL THE TIME... Almost daily in the Spring and Summer. I don't understand why people can't just accept me for who I am... and WHY people are so obsessed with being tan? I don't even tan- I burn and I don't want to go through the same thing my Grandfather did with Skin Cancer. My Mom gets sun damaged spots taken care of at the Dr a lot too and I don't want any part of that.
I think about women like Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Kate Winslet, etc who are fair skinned and they are beautiful women so why do people give me such a hard time? It drives me and my sister (it happens to her a lot) nuts and one day someone is going to say the wrong thing about it and I'm going to bite their head off (lol)

I'm pale and proud! I avoid the sun whenever possible....You ever see women in their forties or fifties with a deep tan and a totally ravaged face? It looks absolutely horrible. No thanks.

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
I am fair skinned. I have a light/peachy complexion.
I DO tan...or I HAVE tanned, but I don't anymore.
my family tans easily even though they are light-skinned, but I have grandparents on both sides that had skin cancer...UM, no thanks.
I DO spray tan, b/c I think I look better tanned, I have dark hair, dark eyebrows and light eyes. I love the way my eyes look when my face has some (fake) color on it.
I think people with a natural darkness to their skin look awesome, and I am totally jealous.
I do also think that the two K(C)ates, Nicole Kidman, and other whities in Hollywood look nice...but they also look ethereal...and sometimes I want to look a little more touchable...steamy...which I think a tan does for me.

I am so pale that I actually have reflected the flash in a few pictures. No kidding.
I love my fair skin & dark hair, and would not change it. No offense to those who do tan (and yes, at one point I did it too....) but when I see my friends of the same age & they look 5 - 10 years older than I do, I know I am doing the right thing.

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
Another fair girl here. I take good care of my skin, and now my friends that are 30 like me & baked in the sun are showing their age while I still look twenty-something (please just humor me) . I HATE when people say "pale". Please just say "fair". The make-up companies don't make powder/foundation called "pale" . I DO put a little tanner on in the Summer b/c I do think than having a little color makes your body look better.

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
I love this thread because this is my LIFE STORY. Ever since I was young the color of my skin has been the biggest issue. I get comments ALL THE TIME. You wouldn't believe the crap people say to me.
Ever since I met DH his family (who is very dark skinned naturally), especially my FIL has made me feel ODD because I don't tan. He swears he can get me to tan and that I'm just not doing something right. He just does not UNDERSTAND people who don't tan. It is a constant topic of conversation. My MIL gets nasty about it sometimes too.....making little jokes and comments. They make me feel like they are better than me because of the whole tanning issue.
Even when I went tanning before my wedding ( the ONLY time in my life I can justify using a tanning bed...never again...I probably shaved about 10 years off my life doing it), my MIL had to turn it into a negative thing and said she really couldn't tell.
Anyway, it's obviously a big issue of mine. I can't say I've embraced my paleness but I am a lot better than I used to be. I just usually roll my eyes now.

You took the words right out of my mouth.
Never, ever will I go to a tanning salon. This is the way I was born... get over it. I embrace my paleness!!
BTW: Not a sun or a beach person. Many people my age are starting to get wrinkled like a prune due to their sun worship. Not me
exactly!!! I love my paleness! I get a bit of color over the summer, but sunblock can only do so much. I am outside from sunup till sundown so I can't get away from the sun!

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
Amen sista!
I hate it when people make comments about me being so fair. I used to be insecure about it so I would go out in the sun and try to get tan. Now I have to run to the dermatologist to get pre-cancerous spots removed. Sorry, cancer is not trendy...now when people make comments about me being so pale I get so mad. I think it's more beautiful and trendy to be healthy. What do you girls think?

Re: what is so wrong about being fair-skinned?
I am that rare fair skinned girl who can tan. A teacher once saw me in shorts and called me "milk white".
I was quite the pale one through my early 20s - I became determined to tan and tan I did. But now, I'm going to just get the spray tan if I want some color. It's NOT worth skin cancer and wrinkles.
