What is the salary of a buyer?

a buyer in a high end retail store..

Just trying to give me crazy teenage cousin some direction in life.
She's not doing well in school and I'm trying to show her that a merchandising degree would be something to look into and extremely well sutied for her. I told her to take a spring elective and to speak to a career advisor.

Re: What is the salary of a buyer?

I am /was in product development which is the same salary range

I started at Macy's making $35K in the training program - which was above average for the year I graduated

a buyer makes between $80K to $120K plus bonus (average)

it's a good career path- plus the discounts

FIT is awesome and inexpensive compared to other schools- plus they help with job placement

however- I will say getting into a corporate retail buying training program is not easy- they get 10K resumes a year for less then 50 spots

you are have to work hard in school and do interships that will get you noticed- that's how I got into the macy's program

Re: What is the salary of a buyer?

In my first position as an Assistant Buyer, I made $32k for a small family owned company.

My director was making about $120 with 8 yrs of experience.

Re: What is the salary of a buyer?

id say it ranges-from 45k-100K, or even higher, depending on experience and the company

but it is a very demanding job-especially for higher end retail stores.

I agree with all the other statments that Beth made, and I will also let you know that this is THE most popular non-design major at FIT, and that it is incredibly competitve and the wait list is huge. At least it was as of 2004.

there was no wait list when I was there- I have my Associates in FMM and my Bachs. in Product Development- they did push people into other areas- b/c most girls come in with the idea that they want to be a junior sportswear buyer- and let's face it- with retail consoildations there are less and less buying jobs every year

there are so many different carrer paths you can take with in the fashion industry

I will be the first to admit - I didn't do so well at other colleges that I went to- I just didn't care

once I got to FIT- I got As and graduated with honors

Re: What is the salary of a buyer?

Another FIT graduate here...I have an AAS in Buying and Merchandising...but I never actually was a buyer Chat Icon

I did my internship and then wound up in store management...got into the corporate offices at one company and then found myself in the IT department. I have always worked with retailers.

Now, I have my own consulting business working with retailers and I focus in the IT world (head-office systems, Point-of-sale systems, automating manual procedures, etc).

There is so much to do in the fashion industry!

Re: What is the salary of a buyer?

I'll also add that with that degree (I also have the AAS in FBM) I was offered the following positions when I graduated:

-Photo Stylist for a luxury magazine
-Promotional Distribution coordinator for a major designer (this job was STRICTLY tracking the items sent to shows and to magazines for shoots. It was with a MAJOR designer).
-Bonded warehouse assistant/import specialist (I had many credits in interntional business and import/export as well).

All of these jobs started in the low 30's (in 2002) but by the 5 yr mark were well over 50 -60K with anticipated promotions.

I took another route and got my BS in communications and business and hopefully will eventually go back and get my JD once I am done having kids.

Re: What is the salary of a buyer?

THanks for all the info. I see some of you have just an Associates. Can she work as an assistant, admin asst or anything right now as she goes to school for her AAS. Then she'll decide if she wants to pursue her BS.

Re: What is the salary of a buyer?

WHat college is she planning on going to? I'm sure that if she went to the career office maybe they can help her with a paid internship.
From my experience, I don't think the fashion industry would hire someone without any work experience or degree watsoever... assuming she's never worked before.

When I went to FIT, it was only a 2 year program...and then you had to apply for another program to go for your bachelor's. I applied for the backelor's program and got in, but decided to take a year and work, and then go back. While I was getting job offers with my 2 year degree...they were for the same $$$ and positions as people with theri 4 year degree's, not only from FIT, but from regular colleges. I remember going to a group interview for the Bloomindale's Executive Training program, and there were people there from other schools whose majors were Liberal Arts, or English, etc.

After I got into the work force...I never went back to get my bachelor's and it has not effected me in getting ahead. I don't know if it's any different now starting out...but I graduated FIT in 1994.

I graduated in 2002 and times changed

Macy's had us up against Ivy League grads- so you needed a 4 year degree

I do know a few people that only had a 2 year degree but they were taking classes for their bachs while they were working

it was during the last 2 years that I had to do an internship- and that is what led to me getting into the macy's program over other people so to me it was worth it

She can do an AAS at FIT or even at Nassau (written by the same people as they are both SUNY schools). There are some FIT professors that are adjuncts there as well. Both schools offer internship assistance. She probably could get a very low entry level job while in school, but it might be detrimental in the long run. Best bet is to get an internship if you want to really get a foot in the door. Chat Icon

Most positions do require a Bachelor's at this point for even entry level.

So was my best friend!! She worked there from 99-05.

Anyway, she was a Finance major though. I remember many people she worked with had some sort of business degree.

Re: What is the salary of a buyer?

it's a good career, but very competitive.
I work for a fashion company now..and ALL the interns want to be buyers.
My company hires interns and I've seen most of them become buyers.

Re: What is the salary of a buyer?

I am a buyer but do not work in the fashion or retail industry. The salaries vary. That is the way my industry works. You stil have to start from the bottom and work your way up. I would say over 50k at least with experience.
