We got DS the Soft Motion ones first on his 1 year birthday because he wasn't walking independently yet and still using tiptoes. But we were concerned about taking steps in the yard and on the deck and etc... That is what the person at Stride Rite recommended.
We got these which have been perfect for the summer.

DS was walking independently before we got his shoes, so we got these from Stride Rite. I LOVE them, and they are part of the Washables collection so they can be machine washed. DS has huge feet so didn't fit into any of the "baby" shoes.

I would suggest speaking to the people at Stride Rite. They are very helpful!

They were great, and will steer you in the right direction. We also tried on a bunch of pairs to see the most comfy and easiest to get on. DS LOVES his! If we tell him to go get his shoes to go out, he runs over, gets them, and sits down with one leg up to put them on.

I would wait then. Barefoot is best really. For outside look at Robeez or PediPeds for something to protect the bottom of his feet.
Not having shoes will help him.

Re: what is your DSs first paid of real shoes?
Ann has a pair of Stride Rite closed sandals and a pair of Keds (I bought them both online). She walks & runs and the only reason I have her in any shoes is because it is required in the room she is moving up to in daycare and I wanted her to be used to them. If it wasn't for that, I would not have even thought about putting her in shoes until after the summer. She turned 1 on July 1st.
