When to get DS his first pair of real walking shoes?
I posted this as a reply to another thread, but it should really be it's own topic
I'm talking about going to stride rite, getting measured/fitted, etc.
He's currently pulling himself up on toys, "cruising", walking when holding on to our hands/toys, but not letting go or taking any steps on his own yet. But of course, I'd like him to! My sister's wedding is 3 months away and we reallllllly want him to walk down that aisle!
Do you think it's time for his 1st pair of stride rites yet? We're headed to the Deer Park outlets this weekend anyway.

I got DS as soon as he was cruising. More bc it was nice out, so hed want to walk holding onto our hands, so he could walk around outside then. Plus, they were just cute.

:) CUTE is right! Thanks
Did you buy him sneaker-type shoes, or sandals with a walking sole?

Same here. We just got Tristan his two weeks ago. He had Robeez, but now that we're in the park a lot I thought he needed something sturdier that wouldn't get as dirty so quickly. He loves to, as my mom puts it, fix his wheels (1st pic)
In the second pic, you can see his shoes - they're kind of sneaker-like (and I just love his face here, so I was looking for an excuse to post it again )
ETA - I would wait until summer to get him sandals (unless you want him to wear them now) for the best possible fit.Image Attachment(s):

Re: When to get DS his first pair of real walking shoes?
we waited until DD was walking on her own. till then, it was pedipeds or robeez. as much as it is cute, my ped, and actually the guy in my local childrens shoe store said barefoot is best, thats how they learn to walk.

No shoes at all for DS, not even for show, until he was truly walking on his own, and even then, not until we actually had him walking outside on his own. Inside still he's always barefoot.

Re: When to get DS his first pair of real walking shoes?
I got my DD her first pair of Stride Rite walking shoes as soon as she was walking on her own without any assistance. While she was just cruising or holding our hands to walk she was barefoot or if we were out just little shoes I got in BRU.

Re: When to get DS his first pair of real walking shoes?
We got them when he was on the verge of walking on his own. Like taking a step or two.
We went to Stride Rite and got their early walker shoes. We didn't get sneakers until the second pair of shoes and only got water shoes for when he was actually in the sprinkler or pool. He has XW feet and the sandals just didn't seem comfortable on him that first summer.

this is my plan and the Ped suggested it. No shoes now. He's almost 11 months. At home he doesn't have anything on his feet. Out he wears socks. He climbs on everything
BTW... he has the biggest feet so when it's time this kid is gonna need EXTRA wide

Re: When to get DS his first pair of real walking shoes?
and he has wide feet too, so that's why i'm thinking stride rite, not just regular BRU shoes

Re: When to get DS his first pair of real walking shoes?
IMO, it is a waste of money to buy shoes before they are walking
For the babysitters I would try pedipeds or robeez (or knock offs of them) but bare feet is best til they can walk

Totally off topic but could he push something down the aisle? Jack could walk really well while pushing a toy, before he could walk on his own.

Re: When to get DS his first pair of real walking shoes?
At the advice of my ped and the lady in Stride Rite, DD did not get shoes until she was completely walking on her own and needed them.

Re: When to get DS his first pair of real walking shoes?
My ped said to hold off, though DS started taking steps unassisted indoors. he said it's better for them to learn to walk without shoes on, and holding off til a little closer to summer will help increase the chance of getting shoes that might fit during the whole summer.

Re: When to get DS his first pair of real walking shoes?
DD cruised forever before she started to walk on her own. She was walking on her own for about 3 weeks and we just got her stride rite sneakers. She wore pedipeds or robees before.

Re: When to get DS his first pair of real walking shoes?
My ped has us get shoes once DD started really cruising around. Not for in the house but for when we are at places like the playground. We don't use them at home but I put them on DD when we go out so I don't worry about her cruising around and stepping on something that could hurt her.

Re: When to get DS his first pair of real walking shoes?
Our ped was adamant about no shoes until he is actually walking, not cruising. He has a pair of Robeez knockoffs that go to the sitters and at home he wears the Trumpette socks.

Re: When to get DS his first pair of real walking shoes?
We got him prewalkers about the point that you are describing. From Stride Rite/Wantagh Bootery. They were really great. Mostly because my Mom forced me to get them. I still think he should be barefoot but, they were going outside a lot at Day care and we were on the weekends.. plus he was slipping a lot at my Mom's since she has wood floor.
So you can get them. But, they didn't make him walk any faster. In fact, there are some doctors that say that it will hinder their walking and that barefoot is best.

Re: When to get DS his first pair of real walking shoes?
I didn't get DS walking shoes until he was walking on his own. He was a late walker, but within 10 days of taking his first steps, he was pretty much walking full time. I think soft soled shoes are fine while they're cruising although barefoot is always best for inside.

Re: When to get DS his first pair of real walking shoes?
I got both of my DC their first real pair of walking shoes (actually they were walking sneakers) from Stride Rite when they both turned 1 years old. By that time, they both were walking with little assistance.

Re: When to get DS his first pair of real walking shoes?
I've been getting Aiden's shoes at the Stride Rite in the Lake Success Shopping Center on Union Turnpike. They have soft walking shoes/sneakers for about$30.00. They lasted over 6 months with him wearing them pretty much evry day. They also have salespeople who will measure his feet for him. I got him his first pair at 11 months -- he was pulling himself up and trying to walk. He wore little sandals over the summer only when we went to the park.
