Dd is one of the stronger readers in her class but she's still only coming home with level A and B books. I think she maybe got one C at some point. Just curious if this is the norm or if her class is lagging (her teacher was out for a while).

I can tell you that when DD was in K, she finished the year at a level G I believe.
I am not sure where she was at at this point in the year, or if they maybe start slow and speed up in the 2nd half.

Uggh, they have a long way to go I guess. I supplement at home with the I Can Read books and other stuff but I hope they start pushing her more in school soon. Her teacher was out during conferences too so I didn't push the sub for much info.

I will also say that even now, in 2nd grade, they push them in school to try books the next level up.

So if DD was a G, they would be having her try H level books in class with the teacher's help.

Typically, "on grade level" for kindergarten is reading on a level D at the end of the school year. This is what most schools follow, though some adjust a bit (but not much).

Re: What level books are your kindergarteners reading right now?

My oldest was reading at level C or possibly higher when he started K and finished at level I, which is the highest level they provide to strong readers in K. The teacher didn’t start sending home books until the middle of the year and they were very beginner books for everyone to read. DS’s library books and the ones he read in class were more geared towards his actual reading level.

My middle one is in K now. He didn’t start reading until October, but once it clicked, he moved up fairly quickly and is now one of the stronger readers. His teacher started sending home easy books in the fall. He occasionally gets harder books from class, but his library books and the ones he reads during school are more difficult than the ones that are sent home to the entire class.

My kindergartener has been bringing home level C. He's doing well with them but, memorizes them as well so it's hard to tell how well he's reading. When we went in for conferences, she said he was one of her best students. It's hard to tell how well he reads because he is re-reading the book he brought home (read it in school) so, some of it is memorization...

DS 1 ended K as an H or I and that was the highest level in his class.

My daughter last year ended K on a c level. her twin brother ended K still on an A and B level. In first now my daughter is a level H and I and my son is level B & C. He is in reading classes. My youngest is in kindergarten now and he is still level A & B. He was just put into reading classes. He has no desire to sit and read though when he is at home. We try every night and he just wont sit still. I don't push it though. My DD loves to read so she will read any chance she gets. her twin would love to read but he struggles academically and gets super frustrated. So when he is frustrated I don't push it on him at home. I let him do it on his terms. My youngest I have given up all hope. I have zero energy to fight him on reading at the end of the day. I am hoping by the end of the year he will calm down and be more focused and into it. On the very rare occasion he does sit down at home and read what he has brought home, he does try. So he does have it in him.

Thanks for all the responses.

So maybe a stupid question but you those saying your child is reading different level books in class versus what they're bringing home, how do you know what level they're using in class?

At the conference the teacher told us. You can email the teacher and ask what reading level she is right now.

Both from the conferences and talking to DS. When they have independent reading during class, each child has certain books that they can choose from based upon individual reading levels. The teacher color coded the different levels.

DD tells me that she is getting level C at school.
She reads chapter books well at home... so a much, much higher reading level.
I let it go.
Practice isn’t going to kill her. I imagine the teacher teaches on an average on the most part (they have reading partners and word speed tests).

DS just got tested and his teacher told me he’s on a B but can read some words in C level books. So she will continue to work on level C with him.
I’m proud of where he is because he gives me such a problem at home when it comes to doing hw and practicing sight words.

Ds is in K and he just brought home level C. They were pretty simple. He never brought home As. They only sent home B and Cd. The class is all over the place though. He seems to be middle of the pack.

My daughter went into school (K) reading at a level I. They "capped" her at a level E because everyone else is AA-C reading levels. So she's been doing like D's in school. I've been so upset. At home she reads, I/J/K books on her own. But just read anything. School does a variety of stuff. Do they want her using Kids A-Z reading website? Ask the teacher. I would reach out.

You could ask the teacher what level she is on. My dd is in Kindergarten and they just started to bring home leveled books last week (she brought home C). I think it takes a while for the teacher to figure out what level they are on at this young age since most of them are brand new to reading. I think you will likely see her moving up levels as the year progresses.

I also think parents need to understand that level is also based on reading comprehension of the material. So while the child may able to read the words in a higher grade level book, they wouldn’t be able to discuss the content in an appropriate manner.

Re: What level books are your kindergarteners reading right now?

This weekend, DS2 brought home a level F book to read and he said kids got different books to take home so the teacher is starting to differentiate now. I know he has been in small reading groups with kids on a similar level for a while too and they get tested periodically to see how they’ve progressed.

It's definitely interesting to see all the different experiences. I'm not pushing anything at the moment bc she's literally had 6 days with her teacher since early October bc the teacher was out and now between snow and sickness it's been rough. I'm hoping that in a few weeks when the class gets back into a routine with the regular teacher I'll see things progress and if not I'll reach out and get more info. I wasn't concerned really, just more curious. They do use the iRead app which is great and does a good job of getting to their level.

Sounds about right to me. DD is reading level Cs at school and her teacher says she is one of the stronger readers in the class.
