Re: what % of your income...
interesting to see these responses.
now that i'm working full time (i'm fresh out of graduate school) I'd like to start doing more financially. we've always volunteered and donated old clothes, but I feel guilty that we don't do more when we are able.

Re: what % of your income...
Don't know %, never really thought of it that way. We give to our church every week as well as the church appeal. We also give to St. Jude and some other charities. Lately we given a bit to the red cross for Haiti. We do claim the church stuff on our taxes, but we don't think to ever claim the other stuff. I guess in our mind it's only a few dollars.

Re: what % of your income...
My charities are St. Judes and The Ronald McDonald House. I didn't donate very much this year, maybe 500 dollars or so, but I was on maternity leave and not pulling in any income, DH started his own business and then I went on sabbatical, so our income has been lowered significantly. I donate clothes, shoes, books etc all the time to St. Mary's in Brooklyn.

Re: what % of your income...
I would say we donate about $1,000 a year to different charities, which in comparison to our income level isnt much. However we are very generous with our family who arent as fortunate, helping with college tuitions and things. We also donate clothes, food and our time. We are planning on donating $1000 to Hiati relief efforts. I say give what you can afford, every little bit helps!

Re: what % of your income...
I donate a good amount but we can. we are in the process of purchasing a house now and will probably be house poor for the next 2 years. I will still continue to give what I can, but I know it will be a lot less then I have been doing. I will probably start giving my time more to make up for the difference.
I've asked many people why they don't want to use their donations on their taxes, and I usually get 1 of 2 answers.
most common- "I can't prove it because I don't save reciepts and its not worth getting audited over"
#2 answer- "I don't do it for a tax break"

Re: what % of your income...
honestly I have never kept track. I know your su[pposed to for taxes, but I never have before. I made my first donation for the year earlier this week for haiti. I actually kept the reciept and will be filing it away. I should ahve kept last years cus I made a bunch of donations but have no proof for taxes. Dumb of me and my laziness!
