Re: What percentage of your clothes are designer?

Posted by babybug631 Well now this has officially turned into another thread about people judging and feeling the need to share negative opinions on how others spend their money.
The "board" has spoken.
oh lord.. get over yourself. i don't see where it 'officially turned into' anything. i think you need to calm down... i said i thought something was silly... others agreed... nowhere did ANY of those people (myself included) say that anyone was less of a person because of it.. just stated OPINION.. i'm sure you have a bunch of your own. I think the average person spending that sort of money on clothing is Silly.. you may think leather pants are silly... its all a matter of opinion. If someone is offended by something as silly as 2% of their wardrobe being called "silly" they have bigger issues to concern themselves with.
maybe pick a more powerful platform to advocate for next time
You can't even say the word Gucci around here without someone making a snide comment about how it's a waste of money. It's repetitive actually, and a little sad.

I don't get how it's sad You have your opinion, theyhave theirs. Though, i never did stop think about the injustice that all Gucci wearers around the world were facing

Posted by bri1980 Whats so silly about it, if someone can afford to buy a few things?
what does being able to afford it have to do with it? I think many people here could probably afford it, but i can't rationalize spending that sort of money on clothing.. just because of the label.. just for show... what's the point? it's just silly to me, and has nothing to do with whether or not one can afford it...
And if you're going to make that arguement then I guess it's just silly that we all live here on LI...one of the most EXPENSIVE places to live in the US. We pay well above the national average in taxes and home prices. But we all live here because we LIKE it. We can all afford to live here, but we could do so much better somewhere else in terms getting more for your money.
We must all be a bunch of LOONIES.

Actually, i live here because my family has deteriorating health problems and i want to be near by if, god forbid, something should happen. I don't see the connection between that and buying expensive clothes but if that's logical to you....

It just seems like everytime someone wants to share something about anything that has to do with designer stuff...all of the sudden everyone passes judegment on how money is spent. That's all I'm trying to say. Whether it's a ca,r hat, house whatever. We all spend our money how we want. I work hard for my money and I can spend it how I like. I don't think it is silly.
And I'm sorry about your family ....but I don't think that is the majority reason why people in general live in such an expensive area. People live here and spend so much more on the cost of living because they want to. Just like someone might spend more on a coat because they want to.
It is not up to any of us to judge.

I appreciate your sincerity, but seriously... NOT every differing opinion is a judgement, its JUST AN OPINION.. and people should be able to share them without having to deal with the easily offended. the word used was "SILLY". "silly!"... and people got their panties in a bunch over THAT?! That's just a little bit ridiculous.. and i think anyone reading this thread would agree. There are more important things in the world to fight for.

Well...I'm not about to start fighting over real topics because then I really would get upset.
I just think a lot of people are almost afraid to post about these things because they know that someone will always say something like "I think it's a waste of money." or "it's ridiculous to spend that much on one thing."
I mean this is a fashion board. I should be able to post about a Burberry coat or Manolos without someone saying "it's silly that you buy things like that".
My FIL has a million Harley Davidson jackets, but they make him happy so who am I to judge how he spends his money?? He works hard for it.
Silly itself isn't such a bad word, but when you have multiple people on this board passing judgement on how others spend their money, it's just rude.
If someone comes on here and says "look what I bought" and I don't like it, I keep that opinion to myself.

I don't know about you girls, but I'm often disappointed in the quality of some of the big house designers. The only ones I've ever thought were worth it were St. John, Loro Piana & Escada. Everything else is so flimsy, so poorly constructed.
I agree

I happen to agree with Neenie...not every opinion is a judgement. Just because you wouldn't voice an opinion about not liking something that someone posted (I don't usually do that either) doesn't mean that others are wrong or rude for doing it. If the person posts "look what I bought", they should know that they are putting it out there for people to voice their opinions. If they can't handle someone possibly not liking it, then they probably shouldn't post it.
I think sometimes people get a little too defensive about what they spend their money on and that's where the problem comes in. Some people are of the opinion that some designer stuff is a waste of money, or that's just not where they chose to spend their money...why is that not a valid opinion? It doesn't have to be a judgement. It doesn't have to be rude. Sure, sometimes some people are more tactful at stating that opinion than others. I don't think "silly" was a rude way of stating that opinion at all.
But if you like to buy designer stuff, you shouldn't feel that you have to justify just because someone else doesn't care for it, but you also shouldn't expect everyone else to fawn all over it either.
Basically it goes both ways on here. Sometimes people say "I would NEVER shop at <insert low priced chain store here>" and some get offended and some don't.

I think only 2 things in my closet are designer... I have a Michael Kors jacket and a pair of Michael Kors heels... both purchased a Marshall's for like 80% less than what they actually cost. I love MK, but I feel like he may be becoming the next CK.... no?

I love him also- but something he did really bothered me
2 years ago I was on the waiting list for a pair of rope wedges that I had to have-
I got them- loved them- still have them
but then this past summer he knocked them off for his Michael line and sold them for less then 1/3 of the price
it's one thing for someone else to knock them off- but this really bothered me

Well I disagree. I think it is passing judgement.
And if someone shops at a particular store or buys a certain designer I wouldn't tell them they are silly for shopping there, whether it's cheap or expensive. I may think it, but I won't say it. Everyone has their tastes and who an I to tell someone they are silly for where they shop??
You're right...if you post something, you are open to scrutiny. I just believe that in a real life social setting half the things that are said on this board wouldn't be said.
When it comes down to it, you guys can judge all you want, but I'm still going to buy what makes me happy. And I'm sure everyone else on here who owns designer duds will do the same.

Re: What percentage of your clothes are designer?
I just think a lot of people are almost afraid to post about these things because they know that someone will always say something like "I think it's a waste of money." or "it's ridiculous to spend that much on one thing." Yes.. and alot of people are afraid to post their REAL opinions because people around here can't even handle the word "silly".
I mean this is a fashion board. I should be able to post about a Burberry coat or Manolos without someone saying "it's silly that you buy things like that". If you like it, then what should you care what other people think?
Silly itself isn't such a bad word, but when you have multiple people on this board passing judgement on how others spend their money, it's just rude. well "SILLY" was the word that was used, and apparently it was pretty offensive to cause this uproar of people being 'judged', etc. it was an OPINION. NO ONE passed judgement on others, just said it looked silly. Anyway, i think its SILLY that this turned into a question of people being judged. Talk about blowing something out of proportion! Just because you feel like there's alot of judgement on this board, doesn't mean that you need to turn my words around and run with them.
If someone comes on here and says "look what I bought" and I don't like it, I keep that opinion to myself. Again, this thread wasn't about that at all.. it was a general question, and you turned it into something that it wasn't. W're all adults. It's a little bit ridiculous if someone's day is riuned just because someone else doesnt like their new shirt or whatever... but still, this wasn't even a question of that. either way, i'm not about to survey the crowd to see if its acceptable for me to post my OPINION on something before i do.
