Re: What REALLY happens if you get summoned to jurty duty..but dont go?
Theoretically, you could be held in contempt for being a no-show but I don't know how often that really happens.
Personally, I don't know why it is acceptable in our society that people try to get out of jury duty any way they can. We have so many freedoms in this country and we take advantage of them every day. In exchange, our government asks for 2 things, taxes and jury duty.
I feel that LIFers try to do the right thing in so many ways, yet getting out of jury duty seems acceptable even in cases where there is no hardship. My opinion is related to the cases in which there is no hardship.
My opinion about this is not related to this question or the OP here specifically. It's about what generally goes on.

Re: What REALLY happens if you get summoned to jurty duty..but dont go?
Many people have a hard time judging someone when there are real consequences involved.... (We all LOVE to judge people, but when we do it on here, nobody goes to jail... ).
I've gone willingly every time I've been summoned. The only time DW postponed it was when we had little DC. It's still very inconvenient, so if she gets summoned again, we may try to get out of it, or I would just stay home with DC.

Re: What REALLY happens if you get summoned to jurty duty..but dont go?
I know 2 people who had issues for ignoring jury summons,
the first person actually had to serve 40 hours of community service, when he received the last notice that said if you do not appear you will be held in contempt (I think that is how the notice read) - he showed at court and was given community service, basically the judge told him that they view it as him making a mockery of what they do for a living. - that was in Suffolk County
The second person received the same type of notice in Nassau but had to serve and did not get community service or anything else.

My brother just went through this.
He ignored 3 letters summoning him to jury duty....he finally showed up to court when they summoned him and threatened to hold him in contempt...
He paid a $50 fine and was assigned immediately the next week to a case which he is now serving on.
He was so dumb to ignore it, the judge told him it could have been a LOT worse-he could have served some jail time for not replying to the summons!

Everyone I know that threw the letters out got in trouble. It's really not worth it.
It's easier just to go there and see if you get picked for a jury.
I love getting jury duty during the summer, always out by 4pm. Nice to have a few short days out of work to enjoy the afternoon

I work in the courts - everyone is trying to get out of jury duty and the people who want to stay and are willing to do it often have some bias for or against one side. You can get in trouble for ignoring a summons. People should go and let the judge know of the issue that they have. Much easier.

Re: What REALLY happens if you get summoned to jurty duty..but dont go?
A jury summons carries the same weight as any other court order. Failing to appear will often cause you to be found in contempt. You can be arrested, fined, and sentenced to community service or jail time. And, no matter what, you'll wind up getting rescheduled for jury duty. Might as well just show up. It's really NOT that big of a deal. I never understood why people get so nuts over jury duty.

I don't think it's ridiculous at all - this is one of the founding principles of our democracy, and one of our essential freedoms that SO many people take for granted, a fair trial by a jury of our peers.
I'm sure there are some who are willing and able to serve on jury duty, but I assure you, at least in Philadelphia, there are NEVER enough people, and what is most essential to a proper, fair and functioning trial by jury is to have a random, distributive sampling of people from all walks of life from the most educated, hard-working, busy, career-oriented, to the less educated, unemployed, SAHM's or people who have more time on their hands to allow more freedom and ease to sit on a jury.
I know for myself if I ever had to have a case against or for myself before a jury I sure as hell would want a good sample of diverse people with diverse backgrounds to make sure my trial was as fair as possible. That is a right and a privilege that everyone enjoys in this Country which is not the case in other parts of the world.

the worst thing you can do as a citizen is not serve as part of a jury of your peers.
our whole legal system is founded on that idea.
I understand it causes some people to endure financial hardships, but the alternative, socially, could be so much worse.
jury trials are our RIGHT but also our DUTY.

I'm going next week...on my BIRTHDAY!! but i'm still going. Not only is it my birthday, it's my day off from work, which means if I was working that day, my job will pay me full salary for the day, and doesn't count as a day off work. But regardless, I haven't even thought of not going. It's something we have to do.

I completley agree
I can never understand why so many people always are trying to get out of jury duty and do not want to serve.
Like Beth said, I am sure that all of us would want a jury of our peers if we were involved in a case before the court.

It varies by state, but it's generally pretty random. I moved a couple of times between 18 and 25 (to different states). I got called once in NY after I relocated to NC. Then I didn't get called again until I moved back to NY. I didn't actually serve jury duty for the first time until I was 26 or 27...

Re: What REALLY happens if you get summoned to jurty duty..but dont go?
I've gotten a jury duty notice twice in my life, once for NY and once for AZ. Both times I had to call in the day before to see if I needed to go in. Never had to appear.
My ex on the other hand was a jacka$$ and didn't want to go, so he threw out the summons. I couldn't believe it. I don't think anything has ever happened. It was for AZ and he is now back in NY.

What's funny about this is when I went to jury duty a few weeks ago, out of the entire room of people who were summoned, 95% were white. When I was called into a courtroom with 27 other people for voire dire, there was ONE indian woman and ONE spanish man. EVERY single other person was white and college educated. I think only 2 people were not married, the rest were married with children.
Some diversity.
I was not the only one to notice this, either. 3 other women were talking about it back in the jury waiting room.

You can only be called for jury duty if you are registered to vote. So it's not a random sampling of the population, it's a random sampling of registered voters.

I served on a jury for a first degree murder trial here in charlotte. I was on jury duty for about 9 weeks and it was the most heartwrenching, depressing thing I ever had to experience
that said, I would not change that experience for the world, it was an eye opener to say the least

I've never thrown them out. I've gone a few times. I dont understand why everyone makes a big deal about going. Its not that bad. I'd rather go there than be at work sometimes.
My former boss used to throw them out all the time and laugh about it. I kinda wished they would have fined him or something, but he got away with not going.

It is no longer true that only voter registration rolls are used to select people for jury duty.
In NY:
If I register to vote, will I be called for jury duty? Jurors are drawn from lists of state taxpayers and licensed drivers as well as from voter registration rolls. Do not give up your right to vote in the hope that you will avoid jury duty. Chances are, if you pay taxes or drive a car, you will still be called. Besides, serving on a jury is a privilege, one that permits you to personally stand up for all Americans' right to a trial by a jury of their peers.

(By the way- I am not mocking you at all. Just making a point! )
You appear to be making Beth's point. The courts don't have time to randomly select only people of a certain race to serve on a jury... They randomly select people using a variety of sources and whoever shows up is whoever shows up. Random doens't mean perfectly allocated across race lines.
Regardless, there are many more factors that go into a "diverse" jury pool than just race. Gender, employment status, education, socioeconomic status, etc. all are extremely important factors in selecting a diverse jury. ETA -- These latter factors are often more important than race, religion, etc.
