What size bike for a 5 year old?
They are 42 and 44 inches tall. They have a 12 and it is tiny, do I get the 16? or the 18?

Alyssa is almost 42 inches tall. She has a 16 inch bike thats perfect with the seat all of the way down. She has plenty of room to grow with it at this point. HTH

Take them to the store and let them sit on them to see which size is best. I have a 5 year old and a nearly 7 year old and they have the same size bike. All kids are different!
Tell them the bike shop owner is Santa's helper and will let Santa know which one is best for them.

Kevin is 5yrs old and had a 16" since he was 3 yrs old. He is starting to look too big on it now but I read somewhere not to go bigger until you take off the training wheels. He is starting to learn but we haven'tworked with him enough. Who knows if that is true but what I read somewhere about bikes and young kids. He could really use the next size up soon so we really go to get working on get his training wheels off. Kevin is taller than your boys though - he is probably 46- 47" now. Not sure if I helped...a 16" would probably be fine in size but they may outgrow quickly so I wouldn't buy anything too $$$.

We got a 16 inch. I really wanted the 20 b/c we got a Trek and it was $$$ but it was just way too big for her.

You have to take them to the store and try it out. I thought for sure I was going 18 and it was too big so we are going 16. She has a 12 now that is too small....

Is he riding it without training wheels?
if so, then I'd opt for the larger bike..
if not, I'd get him on 2 wheels first and then move him up..
