Also why do you like the style of house you bought?

I grew up in a 4 bedroom colonial, no basement....

We bought a 3 bedroom ranch with a completely finished basement that is the entire length of the house (which I LOVE) and there is a small kitchen in the basement (no apartment). I also like how my basement doesnt have that "basementy" feel, (I know that isnt a word, haha). It's cozy~
I always thought I wanted a colonial since I love them....but I am very happy with my ranch and I like that the bedrooms are on the same floor as everything else...especially with a baby...I also like how the living room, kitchen and dining room is kind of an open floor plan. Great for entertaining and we always have company over. I was amazed how big a ranch can actually be

First we had a small ranch

then we moved with my grandparents and made a two family - but its essentially a ranch (my grandmothers was a ranch, and we built the second floor that completely mirrors the first)

the house I am buying is a Hi-Ranch. My least favorite house style. but the kitchen and LR are downstairs - so when people have seen it they think its a splanch or a split...

I like having all the bedrooms on one floor.

eta: and I thought I needed a basement, and I am so glad we dont have one in the new house!

grew up in a high ranch and bought a hi ranch.
i dont like either! lol
but the style of my home is different than the home i grew up in so its ok for now

hopefully i will buy a colonial- thats what i really like

I grew up in a ranch with a finished basement. We pretty much lived down there. We are hoping to buy a house with an upstairs I am tryng not to even look at ranches. Not that I don't like them - I just want something different.

I hate the layout of my Dad's current house. Because it's expanded there are no windows in any of the bathrooms and the main entry is in the diningroom It's also a very choppy layout.

wouldn't even know how to classify the different houses we lived in...a couple were "tudorish" but wouldn't be classified as tudors, one was a converted carriage house (my favorite) and after i moved out, my parents bought 2 more modern setups.

we bought a brick colonial. i love brick, stone, wood materials...i guess i took that from my childhood experiences. my mother likes traditional design and my father likes modern. same goes true for me and DH. ideally i would like an updated tudor, but that's not happening anytime soon, if ever

I grew up in a high ranch and bought a expanded Levitt cape.

I am not really crazy about the setup of the cape, though I love my house. What I don't like about it is that the front door is in front of the staircase and you have to step up on the staircase to get the door closed. Also, it gets really cold in the living room because the door leaks air. I would like a larger kitchen and there is not really anywhere to expand it. I wish the living room and dining room were connected.

I grew up in a ranch with I always loved because it was always so open and bright. Right now, the huse Id want to gte someday is a ranch or a split.

I grew up in a 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath ranch. With a finished basement and an extension (used as a den) built over the garage. ETA-- after my parents got divorced, we moved to a townhouse-- I really did not like that because I felt there was no privacy-- I was a teenager when I lived there. Now, I probably wouldn't mind so much if that is something that is the right decision for DH and I.

Now, we live in a condo-- but, growing up, my dream was always to have a two story house with stairs and a bathroom in my bedroom. I have a bathroom in my bedroom-- but obviously no stairs.

When the time comes I'd like to live in a tudor style home-- mainly cause I am obsessed with Henry VIII (yes, dorky I know) or a Colonial or Victorian style. I love the look of an older home and there is something so homey and transporting about walking up to a home that looks like it's taken from a page out of history.

I hated that the min you walked in you were at stairs. But loved that the basement wasn't IN the basement (meaning underground)

BUT our first choice of a house for US was a ranch then a cape.

I have always adored capes for some reason...They are the perfect cozy little home.

We ended up buying a ranch..And i do love it. It has an extension in the back that is a den. It made the house

Grew up in a 3 bed/2 bath split.
It had no basement but it was 4 floors (we had a downstairs den and garage). My parents added a huge extension on the back and a big deck.

We haven't bought a house yet, but we really like the split style. I always loved that my parents' master bedroom was on it's own level (top floor) with their own bathroom.

I grew up in a tudor and a custom split that my grandfather built. I bought a custom ranch and I love it.

I grew up in an expanded Levitt cape. I liked the layout, but not the size.

We bought a "front to back split"- I say "split level" and people say, "Oh, a ranch?" But I don't think it is. From the front it looks a little like an expanded Levitt, actually. It has three levels- first level has the den, utility room and powder room. Second level has the LR and EIK, and third level has the 3 BRs and full bath.

We first lived in a legal two family- when you entere the front door - there was a door to the left which opened to one apartment (with finished basement) and a door straight ahead which opened to stairs to the second floor apartment - eventually my parents decided they wanted more room so the tenants moved out and we had the entire house.

Then we moved out of state and we had a 4bd 3bath Center Hall Colonial.

When returning to LI, my parents bought a 3Br, 2.5 bath Colonial.

I think Dh and I would like a Splanch or Colonial. Honestly though, if we can afford a house in an area we like - then I'm fine with whatever style it is.

Grew up in a two family dutch colonial. like but wouldn't be my first choice when i look for a house. fh lives in a hi ranch and i am not a fan of it. it feels so disconnected.

would love a finished basement in maybe a cape or a ranch. or would rather a colonial, but not a dutch colonial.

grew up in a small 3 bed two bath ranch but I never knew it was small growing up. I loved the house. It also had a finished basement and a nice but smallish backyard.

I wish I could have bought it back when my parents sold it, but I wasn't ready to buy a house then.

I always liked the ranches and having everything on one level. DH wanted two levels since he grew up in an apartment. His mother says the same thing.

We bought a 2 level house which is sort of capey, sort of colonial and old farmhouse. It even has some tudor qualities..it's a mutt! It's 80 years old and full of charm.

I grew up in an expanded ranch and we bought a split ranch both with basements.

My favorite type of house is colonial. Our split ranch is working out fine for us for now though

grew up in a farm ranch- and loved it!

eta- its not a common house but its set up similar to a high ranch except there is an upstairs with 2 extra bedrooms and there was a partial basement. It was a pretty big house- too bad we arent going to be in a big house like that for a long time.

Grew up in a colonial (dutch colonial), bought a colonial. However, our house is small and my dream is to have a larger center hall colonial with a master suite. I also love tudors and victorians, I am obsessed with older style houses.
