Grew up in a small 3 br 1 bath ranch with no basement. DH owned a 2 family inline ranch on Staten Island which is where we live now. We are looking to move to Long Island and we are looking at all styles except Hi-Ranches because I really don't like them at all. I would love a Center Hall Colonial or a large Ranch.

I grew up in a levitt ranch - my fav of levitt homes - We do not own a home yet but I would love a split (especially front to back) or a ranch - Im not a fan of hi ranches though

I grew up in a 5-bedroom colonial (originally 3 bedroom and my parents made the attic into 2 bedroms). They are selling it soon. They are empty nesters.

We bought a hi-ranch. HATE it. I mean I love having a house and all, but I hate the layout. Our next house will have the bedrooms on a second floor and will have an eat in kitchen (2 things my current house does not have).

I am open to what I will buy- I just want a more open floor plan- and NO high ranches-

I found a huge ranch I really love with a finshed basement- and more open floor plan

3Br, 1.5Bth Ranch w/bsmt & attic. It was tight for 5 of us (M&D and 3 girls... my poor father). But I love that house! My parents still live there.

grew up in a cape..which I love my parents house.....bought a cambridge...no clue how describe it..

we bought in NC...we wanted new construction and found a great new community...we have a 5 bedroom 2.5 bath house with a decent size lot. Can't beat the price or the property tax...so here we are

I grew up in a cape and bought a split. I like the layout of the split. We have a mother daughter and my Mom lives downstairs so it would be nicer spacewise if we had the whole house but we're not kicking her out anytime soon LOL We have a partial basement which is actually quite huge, people are always so surprised when they see it. And lots of attic space. I wish we had one more bedroom upstairs but we could expand easily if we wanted to (and had the $$)

My mom didn't own a house, and we moved around a lot, but I always lived in a typical PR cement house, 2 floors, similar to the first one except that ours were open in the bottom, no closed garage. That's where the laundry room was.


DH and I bought a "traditional", I guess. I don't know what you would call our house.

ETA: Thanks to Meaghan, the type of house we bought is a colonial, also called a traditional colonial.

Grew up in a center hall 5 bedroom 4 bath colonial. We're looking at 3 bedroom 1 bath ranches. I would love love the house I grew up in...

I grew up in a small cape.

My first house was a ranch with a walk-out basement (basement in the front part of the house was underground, but the back had french doors to the backyard).

Now I live in a front to back split, which we are expanding in a few months. Not sure what it will be called then - it will look like a colonial, and all the bedrooms will be on the same (new floor), but it won't be a split floor. Master BR will be a suite with a large bath and walk-in closet. Maybe it would be called a contemporary inside?

I grew up in an L-shaped ranch which my parents expanded to make a U-shaped ranch. It was on a slab,but the layout was great & it was plenty big enough. It was 3 huge beds & 3 full baths & there were only three of us.
We bought a "colonial" but its really a big ranch with a second story that was added...its a mutt. Its 5 br & 3 full baths .
we took down walls & switched things around & the layout is great for entertaining now. We have a huge basement, we only finished 1/3 of it.
I hate hanging out down there even though the room is really nice, because I grew up on a slab hanging out underground seems weird to me

Grew up in a Colonial

Now have a 4 bedroom 3.5 bath expanded ranch with an open floor plan. Two bedrooms (master and a guest) and two baths on the main floor. Two bedrooms 1 bath upstairs, and a tremendous attic we could easily make another 2 or 3 rooms out of. And a full finished basement. I love my house!

I grew up in a huge 5 bedroom house. I guess it would be considered a colonial but it had a balcony over the garage, so kind of spanish looking.

I had a co-op before I got married. Now we have a small 3 bed 1 bath 1900 colonial with wrap-around porch. We're in the process of extending it to make a master bedroom and second bathroom. I love my house and hope I never move again.

my dream house is a victorian, but DH loves tudors

I grew up in what I guess is a colonial - 4 floors (attic, bedroom floor, living floor and basement), so looking at ranches, h-ranches on LI is so weird and odd to me, and I would much prefer a colonial. Now to find one we like in an area we like!

I grew up in what has been called a Contemporary. It looked like a Cape from the outside but is a totally different layout than a Cape.

DH grew up in a Split.

We bought a Cape.

Ideally I would love a Craftsman Bungalow or a Tudor. Love the charm and wood details of the both of those styles.
