What temperature do you keep your thermostat set on?

A thread on parenting SHOCKED me. We keep our thermostat set at 63 degrees during the day and drop it down to 60 or 61 at night. Our house holds a LOT of heat, so it rarely goes below 64. If the heat kicks on, we know its COLD. We use blankets at night, and if we get chilled during the day, we wear sweatshirts. If the heat goes above 65, its STIFLING and I am opening windows. I was surprised to see how many people keep their homes REALLY warm, like in the 70's!

So how warm is your house?

our house is very drafty... windows are crappy, etc... between 65 & 68

We keep it at 68. However, we almost always entirely shut the system down at night because our bedroom gets so warm.

dh hates me but after watching the heating bills keep going up - 62/64 during the day/night and when we are home and morning 66.

our house though isn't that amazing with retaining heat so we are working on that.

We keep it at around 62 while no one is at home, when we get home it goes up between 65 and 68. In the room we hang out with the most we have an electric heater because it is the most drafty and if we blast the heat, the rest of the house becomes a sauna!

At night while we sleep we keep it at around 65 b/c we like it to be a little cold since at night we both radiate such heat!

68. If we are cold we get a blanket/sweater.

During day when we are not home both zones 60. At 430 downstairs raises to 65, upstairs still 60.. and when we are home maybe upstairs 65 and downstairs 70, till bed. Then they both go back to 60

We keep ours around 64/65 all the time. I hated it at first b/c I was used to my parents keeping the house at 68 but now I'm used to it. I can not sleep if its any warmer than that.

We are so anti-heat LOL! And I get chilly but to keep costs down we only just put our heat on for the first time December 5th!! We were so proud of ourselves for holding out that long lol... we did use our fireplace on the cold nights in leiu of the heat being on which REALLY warmed up the place. We have very good insulation as well - I think that helps. But, we keep it on 62 almost all of the time - if we need to make it warmer we either put a sweatshirt on, get a blanket, or fire up the fireplace. We are dedicated to low heating bills being this is our first winter in our first home!!

When we are home is it somewhere between 65 and 70. At night and during the day when we are at work it gets turned down to about 60.

67/68 when we are home
62-64 when sleeping/not home


BUT... this is our main level. We have a split and the 2 floors where the bedrooms and 2-4 degrees colder at any given momement. It SUCKKKKS.
We only have 1 zone

We keep ours at 58-60 when we aren't home and 63 when we are. It never goes above 65.

This is going to depend on the size of the house and ceiling height, so everyone's answers will vary.

We have a small house but keep it at 70 because I hate feeling cold. At night, it drops down to 65. During the day, DH has it programmed to 61 until around 4 pm when he gets home and it hoes back up to 68/70.

i think our house hemmorhages heat. 68-69 when we're home, 65 when out. and it's still freezing on the 2nd floor (1 zone) - glad we don't have our bedroom up there!

Upstairs (bedrooms we don't use) - is at 58. If we go up there, I turn the heat up (it has it's own thermostat).

Downstairs - 62-65. I'm cheap and hate filling the oil tank.

68 is the magic number in my house. Even a degree above that I'm sweating.

I'm always freezing. Between 68-72

Usually 68 degrees but the tenant upstairs complains that it's too cold. So lately 71 or 72. It's sweltering- I have all the windows on my floor open.

This is the only debate DH and I argue about it. Mostly because I'm a cheapo .

Before getting married, I kept my apt. at 55 and just used a space heater in whatever room I was in. It filled the whole room to feel like it was over 70! DH wants the space heater on AND he wants the temp up to 75.

My cheapo heart breaks thinking about it .

60-64 right now

few degrees higher when it gets even colder, but I've never had it over 70

Funny how 70 is so NOT hot outside in the summer, but I'd melt if it was 70 in the house in the winter

Dh and i live with his parents in a drafty house. During the day when dh and I are home we keep the house at 68. This sometimes means if i stay in the bedroom i am underneath the blankets with fleece shirt and pants on. At night when dh's parents come home it is set to 71, which is too hot for me and i am in a tank and shorts for bed.
